At the Feet of The Mother

The Psychic Being, p. 526

Opening Remarks
Our soul is the conscious representative of the Spirit. Savitri now comes in contact with her psychic being which is being described in revealing words.

Immortal and transience
A being stood immortal in transience,
Deathless dallying with momentary things,
In whose wide eyes of tranquil happiness
Which pity and sorrow could not abrogate
Infinity turned its gaze on finite shapes:
Observer of the silent steps of the hours,
Eternity upheld the minute’s acts
And the passing scenes of the Everlasting’s play.

The psychic being is the immortal in our transient life and its ever changing scenes. It is the deathless element in us amidst all that transient and momentary. Its eyes are wide and full of tranquil happiness that the pain and sufferings of the world cannot remove or take away. It is infinity watching over finite forms. It observes the silent steps of time. It is eternity upholding the beats of time and the moment’s acts and the passing scenes of the everlasting play of the Divine.

God’s delegate in our humanity
In the mystery of its selecting will,
In the Divine Comedy a participant,
The Spirit’s conscious representative,
God’s delegate in our humanity,
Comrade of the universe, the Transcendent’s ray,
She had come into the mortal body’s room
To play at ball with Time and Circumstance.

The psychic being chooses its role to participate in the Divine Comedy. It is the Spirit’s conscious representative, God’s delegate in our humanity in the earthly Play. It is the comrade of the universe and its divine forces, the ray of the Transcendent that had entered in the field of Time and Circumstances to play with it.

A smile on her lips
A joy in the world her master movement here,
The passion of the game lighted her eyes:
A smile on her lips welcomed earth’s bliss and grief,
A laugh was her return to pleasure and pain.

The soul acts with joy as its master movement. It is ignited by the passion of the world game. A smile on her lips in all circumstances welcome earth’s bliss and grief. A laugh is her return to pleasure and pain.

Strong spirit’s peace
All things she saw as a masquerade of Truth
Disguised in the costumes of Ignorance,
Crossing the years to immortality;
All she could front with the strong spirit’s peace.

She saw all things as a masque and a masquerade of Truth disguised in forms and terms of Ignorance crossing through time to immortality. All she could face with the strong spirit’s peace,

Labour of the stars
But since she knows the toil of mind and life
As a mother feels and shares her children’s lives,
She puts forth a small portion of herself,
A being no bigger than the thumb of man
Into a hidden region of the heart
To face the pang and to forget the bliss,
To share the suffering and endure earth’s wounds
And labour mid the labour of the stars.

The Divine Mother knows the struggle and strain of mind and life as a mother feels and shares her children’s lives, She brings out of herself a small portion of herself, a being no bigger than the thumb of man into a hidden region of the heart. This being no bigger than the thumb is the psychic being in man to face the pang and forget the bliss. It is there to share our sufferings and endure the wounds that we experience and receive during our earthly sojourn. It is this psychic being that labours with destiny and fate hand in hand with the cosmic powers.

Closing remarks
We are introduced to the psychic being and its main function in earthly life.
