At the Feet of The Mother

The Last Chamber, pp. 525-526

Opening Remarks
As Savitri enters the threshold of the sanctum sanctorum she encounters her true identity that was so far sealed.

Inly felt and knew
All this she saw and inly felt and knew
Not by some thought of mind but by the self.

Savitri saw and felt and knew everything not by thought and mind but inwardly by the self.

Spirit’s vision
A light not born of sun or moon or fire,
A light that dwelt within and saw within
Shedding an intimate visibility
Made secrecy more revealing than the word:
Our sight and sense are a fallible gaze and touch
And only the spirit’s vision is wholly true.

There she saw and knew all in the light of the self. This light was not born of sun or moon or fire but dwelt within the self-shedding an intimate power to see. It made secrecy more revealing than what language or word can utter. Our sight and senses and touch are fallible but the spirit’s vision alone is true.

Made one with all she saw
As thus she passed in that mysterious place
Through room and room, through door and rock-hewn door,
She felt herself made one with all she saw.

Thus Savitri passed into that mysterious place through room and room, through door and door hewn in matter. As he passed towards the inmost chamber she became one with all she saw reclaiming her portions hidden in these depths.

Sealed identity
A sealed identity within her woke;
She knew herself the Beloved of the Supreme:
These Gods and Goddesses were he and she:
The Mother was she of Beauty and Delight,
The Word in Brahma’s vast creating clasp,
The World-Puissance on almighty Shiva’s lap,—
The Master and the Mother of all lives
Watching the worlds their twin regard had made,
And Krishna and Radha for ever entwined in bliss,
The Adorer and Adored self-lost and one.

A sealed identity awoke within her woke and she knew herself as the Beloved of the Supreme. She knew that all the great Gods and Goddesses were she and he as the Lord and His Shakti. She was the Mother of Beauty and Delight, the Word of creation in Brahma’s vast creative clasp, the World-Puissance in Almighty Shiva’s lap, the Master and Mother of all lives watching the world their twin regard had made. They were Radha and Krishna ever entwined in bliss, the Adored and Adorer self-lost and one.

Golden seat
In the last chamber on a golden seat
One sat whose shape no vision could define;
Only one felt the world’s unattainable fount,
A Power of which she was a straying Force,
An invisible Beauty, goal of the world’s desire,
A Sun of which all knowledge is a beam,
A Greatness without whom no life could be.

In the last chamber on a golden seat One sat whose shape no vision could define. Only one felt the world’s unattainable fount, a Power of which she was a Force that had strayed into the world, a beauty no eye could define, yet that which was the goal of the world’s desire. It was a Sun of which all knowledge is a beam and a Greatness that was the source and origin of all life.

Silent self
Thence all departed into silent self,
And all became formless and pure and bare.

Then all withdrew deeper into a silent self and became formless and pure and bare.

Deathless sun
Then through a tunnel dug in the last rock
She came out where there shone a deathless sun.

Then through a tunnel dug in the last rock of matter she emerged into a space where there shown a deathless sun.

Secret soul
A house was there all made of flame and light
And crossing a wall of doorless living fire
There suddenly she met her secret soul.

There was a house all made of flame and light. Thence crossing a wall of doorless living fire there suddenly she met her secret soul.

Closing Remarks
Thus Savitri enters the sanctum sanctorum in the inmost depths of her heart where she met her soul.

Why is there such a diversity in the world, why all this multiplicity, why all this confusion, why...?
