At the Feet of The Mother

A Bridge Towards the Future (1): A World’s Desire Compelled Her Mortal Birth

This is the knot that ties together the stars:
The Two who are one are the secret of all power,
The Two who are one are the might and right in things….

There are Two who are One and play in many worlds;
In Knowledge and Ignorance they have spoken and met
And light and darkness are their eyes’ interchange;
Our pleasure and pain are their wrestle and embrace,
Our deeds, our hopes are intimate to their tale;
They are married secretly in our thought and life.
The universe is an endless masquerade:
For nothing here is utterly what it seems;
It is a dream-fact vision of a truth
Which but for the dream would not be wholly true,
A phenomenon stands out significant
Against dim backgrounds of eternity;
We accept its face and pass by all it means;
A part is seen, we take it for the whole.
Thus have they made their play with us for roles:
Author and actor with himself as scene,
He moves there as the Soul, as Nature she. [Savitri: 63, 61]

The Mother’s story is the story of creation itself. She is the heart of the Supreme who impelled Him to create. It is She who gave to the Ineffable Mystery of the Unknowable the Great Name and bore for His sake the seed of creation so that She may multiply His Glory and Greatness in numberless names and forms. The drama of life, the epic of human life is the long many-sided story of Her Romance with Her eternal Lover and Beloved.  Together They have woven the texture and fabric of our life and its varied plot. Together They have planned the steps and stages of the soul’s return through a perfect flowering of its divine possibilities. Together They have built the many layered mansion for us to explore and claim as our legitimate inheritance, this many-toned universe. We too are, in our secret truth part and parcel, portions of Her being and powers and personalities even as the gods and goddesses are Her cosmic assistants. Even the titans and those who apparently oppose Her Will are part of the single plan through which She fulfils Her Will to mould our human clay to build a diviner form for our soul and the Divine within to dwell. She is the great Secret hidden in the cavern of our heart. She is the alchemist Energy that lies coiled up at the base of our spine, She is the Conscious Force that has built the atoms and the stars and the system of suns. The constellations are Her ear rings and jewel, the drift of galaxies and the whirling of the atoms is Her stupendous dance. And yet, from time to time for a special Work and Divine Purpose, impelled by the cry of the Earth, moved by the passion of the gods and the aspiration of the sages, responding to the dumb prayer of bird and beast and stone, out of an infinite Compassion and Love, She descends amidst us assuming a human form and name. From Age to age, at the turn of every cycle, at every crucial juncture She has manifested in one form or another as the secret Soul of the earth now donning the garb of one nation, now of another. We too have come with Her in countless forms in the great cosmic play. Our lives too are a miniature play of the Two-who-are-One. In us He, the Iswara wears a diminished form and She, His Shakti assumes a limited movement, as Soul and Nature.  In the story of Her life is the secret of our own story.

This time too, at the turn of the Cycle of Time as the world was struggling with nightmare into which it was caught, She came. Armed with the transmuting power of Divine Love, holding high the lamp of Hope lit by the future Sun She entered the transient human mould conscious of Her divinity.  Her Work this time was not simply to hold the march of humanity together but to take it one step higher. This work involved three main stages. The first was to adapt Herself to the atmosphere of the earth that was vitiated with falsehood, evil and suffering. Struggling and battling against the darkness of the Age She had to arrive at the fullness of Her own divinity so that all the powers were released and active in and through Her body. The second stage began with Her meeting with Sri Aurobindo, the Ishwara whose Shakti She always is. It involved the drawing together of representative samples of humanity, especially those who have been with Her in the battle of the Ages one way or the other. This was the beginning of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.  Finally, the world at large had to be included in the unfolding of the New Creation. The initial effort at the New Creation had to be confined to a limited number in Time and Space, yet it had to spread sooner or later to the other sections of humanity when it was ready and the time was ripe. This third phase of the Work started after the 29th February 1956 when her human body became a bridge between Supermind, ‘the ‘Sun of tomorrow’ and the human world of yesterday guided by the mind through the starlit night of the Ignorance.

If I could get thus displeased in presence of the human weaknesses, I would certainly not be fit to do the work I am doing, and my coming upon earth would have no meaning.
