At the Feet of The Mother

A Bridge Towards the Future (2): An Ancient Aspiration

A Will, a hope immense now seized his heart,
And to discern the superhuman’s form
He raised his eyes to unseen spiritual heights,
Aspiring to bring down a greater world.
The glory he had glimpsed must be his home.
A brighter heavenlier sun must soon illume
This dusk room with its dark internal stair,
The infant soul in its small nursery school
Mid objects meant for a lesson hardly learned
Outgrow its early grammar of intellect
And its imitation of Earth-Nature’s art,
Its earthly dialect to God-language change,
In living symbols study Reality
And learn the logic of the Infinite.
The Ideal must be Nature’s common truth,
The body illumined with the indwelling God,
The heart and mind feel one with all that is,
A conscious soul live in a conscious world. [Savitri: 76-77]

What happened on the 29th February was the culmination of centuries and millennium of aspiration.  The aspiration of a perfect world, for a perfect humanity has always been there as part of our common human dream. Its expression has been different in different ages and mankind has taken different routes in its effort towards the fulfilment of this aspiration. It has tried several means and at times partially succeeded in a limited way. Most often the effort collapsed after an initial promising start. But the dream has refused to die. Even the failed attempts have not been wasted as each such effort has left the earth somewhat richer opening new doors of the Spirit. Each approximation has increased the future possibility. Creation and mankind have bounced back even after successive pralayas as if this aspiration towards the perfectibility of the race is rooted deep within some immortal core of our being.

It was a beginning and an end. It is the beginning of a new age that would take man beyond our present animal humanity to a divine superhumanity of the future.  It marks the end of long winding spirals of evolution in ignorance.  Until now the evolutionary history of earth and humanity has been a difficult forward march through the doors of battle and war, a strenuous ascent. This is so because of the double nature of man. On the one hand we inherit the animal nature that is largely unconscious of itself and its motives but is moved almost reflexively by instincts. On the other hand, the evolution of humanity out of the animal endows us with reason and reflection, especially discernment, that makes us half conscious of ourselves and the world. This half awareness of things coupled with a seeking ignorance makes us suffer and struggle so much more. Yet it opens the doors to a true wisdom and complete awareness so that we can advance securely in the light of full consciousness and deal with ourselves and the world in a conscious way

The Supramental Manifestation marks the moment when the life in ignorance begins its transition to a life in knowledge, not just the half aware mental knowledge but in the light and full awareness of the Supramental Knowledge. To draw a comparison, our present mind is like a lamp lit night guided in our journey by stars shining high above as luminous points of reference. These stars are the gods, the sages, the scriptures, the scroll of destiny, the collective wisdom of the past. Sometimes we see a few go beyond and dwell in the moonlight amidst the general darkness. They receive and reflect a greater light from some unseen Sun beyond but it is enough to help us individually and few others in proximity in the travel through the night. These are the revered seers and Yogis and Avatars that have held and led the march of mankind further. In comparison, the Supramental is the Sun itself from which we can directly draw our life breath, tap into its infinite Omniscience by linking our intelligence, receive the influx of the Divine Omnipotence in our life, grow one with the boundless Divine Love in our heart, dwell in Its inalienable Peace and Bliss even while engaged in all our usual activities. Such is the difference between our present and the Supramental future. Its unfolding has begun. Its fullness will manifest by and by as Time flows, first in a few, then few more, then more and more until all is taken up by the New Life and becomes a New Creation and a New Race.

It is this golden future that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother have brought for mankind through their tapasya and Grace.
