Opening Remarks
Sri Aurobindo reveals to us the workings of Fate from the highest vision. In this highest state all is seen as the workings of Truth, the play of God or His lila, whose steps and goal we cannot fathom. This Truth is working in creation to emerge in its fullness through layers and layers of ignorance that has covered its face.
The secret power in the Inconscient depths
On peaks beyond our ken the All-Wisdom sits:
A single and infallible look comes down,
A silent touch from the supernal’s air
Awakes to ignorant knowledge in its acts
The secret power in the inconscient depths,
Compelling the blinded Godhead to emerge,
Determining Necessity’s nude dance
As she passes through the circuit of the hours
And vanishes from the chase of finite eyes
Down circling vistas of aeonic Time.
The Inconscience is not an absence of Consciousness since such a thing is not possible to exist. Rather it is a state where there is an impression as if there is no Consciousness since Consciousness is hidden completely in the folds of its darkness. The Divine is there but as if blinded. This Divine in the Inconscience who is asleep is woken up by the glance of the Divine Above. Thus the game of creation starts. But since the All-Consciousness is hidden there and slowly releases its potential. All creation bears its testimony. Even though its creatures struggle in ignorance and play with necessity and chance, yet there is a secret knowledge working in all its acts.
Original foresight
The unseizable forces of the cosmic whirl
Bear in their bacchant limbs the fixity
Of an original foresight that is Fate.
It is as if a mighty Intelligence were working from behind that knows all its steps in advance. Fate thus seen is merely the cosmic forces working out in delight what has already been decided and foreseen. It is this knowledge of the whole play that makes it delightful since the beautiful end is already known. But in ignorance it all seems a play of chance and randomness with much suffering and pain ensued in the process.
Seed-idea
Even Nature’s ignorance is Truth’s instrument;
Our struggling ego cannot change her course:
Yet is it a conscious power that moves in us,
A seed-idea is parent of our acts
And destiny the unrecognised child of Will.
We are ignorant and as long as we remain so there is bound to be suffering. But when the master-plan is understood, when we discover that it is our soul that has chosen the various circumstances and scenes of our life since thus alone can the original script unfold, It is the Will and Wisdom working in our depths that ultimately has the final say and even when we seem to stray in our ignorance yet the secret Will prevails and the seed-idea grows towards its fruition.
Secret self
Infallibly by Truth’s directing gaze
All creatures here their secret self disclose,
Forced to become what in themselves they hide.
Whatever our outer circumstances and difficulties of nature may be eventually it is all leading towards a grand culmination. Ultimately all our experience, events and circumstances help in the emergence of our true self under the growing compulsion of the secret Truth within.
Godhead shut within the cell
For He who Is grows manifest in the years
And the slow Godhead shut within the cell
Climbs from the plasm to immortality.
It is the Divine hidden behind the mask of His own works that we know as creation. It is He who works silently from the depths carrying all things towards their divine consummation. The cells hold His flame compelling matter and plasm to aspire and grow towards immortality.
Closing Remarks
This Divine Presence hidden in the depths of creation, working even in the depths of the Inconscience is the hope for all things. In the beginning itself the close has been prepared by a supreme Wisdom. The seed-idea has already been sown in the soil of nature and with passage of time it must bear fruits and flowers and disclose the divinity that is latent within it.
