At the Feet of The Mother

The Divine Will Assuming a Human Form, pp. 353-354

Opening Remarks
Ordinarily the human will distorts the Divine Will. But the Divine Advent is to once again activate the original Divine Impulsion in creation.

Make Matter conscious of its God
For since upon this blind and whirling globe
Earth-plasm first quivered with the illumining mind
And life invaded the material sheath
Afflicting Inconscience with the need to feel,
Since in Infinity’s silence woke a word,
A Mother-wisdom works in Nature’s breast
To pour delight on the heart of toil and want
And press perfection on life’s stumbling powers,
Impose heaven-sentience on the obscure abyss
And make dumb Matter conscious of its God.

The work for which the Avatar descends is to transform matter by putting it in direct contact with the Divine. By doing so a passage is opened within matter itself for the forces of a higher divine order to rush in upon earth. The Divine Wisdom working in earth’s breast is constantly labouring for this great divine consummation of matter through life and mind and now through the manifestation of the Supermind. Through all this long labour She seeks to pour delight on the heart of human toil and press it towards perfection. Through a progressive increase and ascent of consciousness She seeks to make matter conscious of the Divine directly.

Her will to divinise clay
Although our fallen minds forget to climb,
Although our human stuff resists or breaks,
She keeps her will that hopes to divinise clay;
Failure cannot repress, defeat o’erthrow;
Time cannot weary her nor the Void subdue,
The ages have not made her passion less;
No victory she admits of Death or Fate.

Though the task seems impossible and our minds and human nature resists, falling back upon the old days, The Divine Mother has laboured for this through the ages and will continue to do so by pressing Her original Will to divinise clay despite previous failed attempts. She keeps pouring and pressing Her Will with as much passions as before.

Drives the soul to new attempts
Always she drives the soul to new attempt;
Always her magical infinitude
Forces to aspire the inert brute elements;
As one who has all infinity to waste,
She scatters the seed of the Eternal’s strength
On a half-animate and crumbling mould,
Plants heaven’s delight in the heart’s passionate mire,
Pours godhead’s seekings into a bare beast frame,
Hides immortality in a mask of death.

Always She drives the soul to new attempts and efforts to climb higher and higher. Her Force of Infinity keeps pressing upon life and matter to compel it to aspire. Scattering strength in fragile earthly forms She plants delight in the heart’s passionate mire and pours delight even in an animal mould hiding immortality in a cape of death.

Putting on an earthly shape
Once more that Will put on an earthly shape.

The Avatar is an embodiment of the Divine Will in creation leading the human march forward and upwards.

Closing Remarks
We are given in these passages the real purpose of Avatarhood.
