The Devotees Who Respond, p. 364

Opening Remarks
There are different kinds of responses that humanity gives to the Divine. Some respond with faith and love, others with doubt and resistance.

Worship
So men worship a god too great to know,
Too high, too vast to wear a limiting shape;
They feel a Presence and obey a might,
Adore a love whose rapture invades their breasts;
To a divine ardour quickening the heart-beats,
A law they follow greatening heart and life.

Men worship someone too great for them and long to rise by the help of the Presence and the Power they feel in the person. They adore a love whose rapture invades their hearts inspiring them to a greater life. They follow the Great ones in whose wake their life feels uplifted and greatened.

High steps
Opened to the breath is a new diviner air,
Opened to man is a freer, happier world:
He sees high steps climbing to Self and Light.

Man sees the high steps climbing ever upwards and upwards opening to a new diviner air and a freer happier luminous world.

The soul’s allegiance
Her divine parts the soul’s allegiance called:
It saw, it felt, it knew the deity.

Her divinity drew the soul and called upon it to be faithful to the Divine. It saw and felt the Divine within Her.

They gave themselves to Her
Her will was puissant on their nature’s acts,
Her heart’s inexhaustible sweetness lured their hearts,
A being they loved whose bounds exceeded theirs;
Her measure they could not reach but bore her touch,
Answering with the flower’s answer to the sun
They gave themselves to her and asked no more.

Her Will reigned over them and pushed them to act. Her inexhaustible sweetness lured their hearts to turn towards the Divine. They loved Her greatness that fully exceeded theirs but could not reach Her. They received Her touch and gave themselves to Her asking for nothing more.

Felt a godhead and obeyed a call
One greater than themselves, too wide for their ken,
Their minds could not understand nor wholly know,
Their lives replied to hers, moved at her words:
They felt a godhead and obeyed a call,
Answered to her lead and did her work in the world;
Their lives, their natures moved compelled by hers
As if the truth of their own larger selves
Put on an aspect of divinity
To exalt them to a pitch beyond their earth’s.

Though Her greatness could not be understood by their small minds yet their lives responded to Her and was moved by Her words. They felt Her Godhead and obeyed the call answering to Her lead and doing Her works in the world. She seemed the truth of their own gs at another height putting on an aspect of divinity to take them to those divine heights.

Faith drew them
They felt a larger future meet their walk;
She held their hands, she chose for them their paths:
They were moved by her towards great unknown things,
Faith drew them and the joy to feel themselves hers;
They lived in her, they saw the world with her eyes.

These souls drawn spontaneously to Her and gave themselves to Her felt a larger future await in Her. She held their hands and moved them towards great unknown things of the future waiting to manifest. They knew not what it was but put their faith completely in Her for the joy of belonging to Her, to live in Her and see the world with Her eyes. She held them close and carried them along their true paths.

Closing Remarks
Faith and surrender are the greatest of all responses we can give to the Divine but they require a psychic turn and a simple childlike trust in the Divine Grace.
