At the Feet of The Mother

Gratitude (11/18) Voiceless Mystery of the Past

Out of the voiceless mystery of the past
In a present ignorant of forgotten bonds
These spirits met upon the roads of Time.
Yet in the heart their secret conscious selves
At once aware grew of each other warned
By the first call of a delightful voice
And a first vision of the destined face.
As when being cries to being from its depths
Behind the screen of the external sense
And strives to find the heart-disclosing word,
The passionate speech revealing the soul’s need,
But the mind’s ignorance veils the inner sight,
Only a little breaks through our earth-made bounds,
So now they met in that momentous hour,
So utter the recognition in the deeps,
The remembrance lost, the oneness felt and missed. [Savitri: 400]

The war had come between the Incarnate dual power though it could neither discourage nor deter them from the chosen path. The Mother had to return back to France in February 1915, She returned for good on the 24th April 1920 to live permanently near Sri Aurobindo. Much happened between the two meetings. Sri Aurobindo continued to write series of books through the Arya, a monthly initiated by the Mother. The Mother continued to sound the depths and widenesses of creation to fully equip herself for the future work. Her return marked a decisive turn in Sri Aurobindo’s yoga and his work. Drawn by the Light and Peace and Compassion of the Master and the Love and Sweetness and Delight of the Mother’s Presence, the disciples began to come. Not only human beings but the gods and the titans started getting drawn by their knowledge and power.

The prospective candidates for the future humanity was arriving and so were the gods. It is the gods who had forged them so far in the Smithy of earthly life. But now the time was drawing near for man himself to discover that he himself is a god who has fallen from his heights. He must reclaim his lost summits and then himself participate in the labour of the gods as one of them. He must share the burden of the gods and thereby become a bridge between the past and a yet greater future, the next chapter in the Lila of the Lord. It is for this new Lila that the Divine had descended and taken a human form. They who were Radha and Krishna had returned as Mirra and Sri Aurobindo. Man knew it not but something in him was drawn by the Presence of the Divine upon earth. Some had even come consciously to be part of this new mission for which they had laboured in previous lives with the Mother and Sri Aurobindo when they came as various Vibhutis to prepare the earth for this moment. The gods too knew not what new Lila was being played or worked out with the Divine Mother Herself assuming charge of Her Creation directly. Even now it is She who alone has the Absolute Power and Wisdom, Hers is the saviour Grace and Love, the Strength and Courage and Peace that helps and succours and wins the battle for us. But so far She has worked indirectly through Prakriti or Nature, more accurately lower nature since it acts on the basis of limitation and division. But now the time had come to realise the undifferentiated Unity of the One to realise the differentiated Unity by certain human beings at least and thereby be even as miniature divinities playing consciously with time and circumstance. The godlike possibility in man had to be released and then the still higher divine possibility. The godly man and the man of God, the saint and sage, the spiritual genius, the hero and the martyr had been realised at least by a few pioneers of spiritual evolution. The time had come to realise the divine man, the superhumanity of the future. But none knew, not even the gods, nor even the sages and the saints, what that divine superhumanity would be. The Mother had carefully hidden it in Her eyelashes prints. The time had not yet come to disclose it fully. It was the hour before the gods awake.
