Pain is a state when our consciousness is intensely concentrated at one spot, be it physical or psychological. There are four things we can do with it.
One is to turn the mind away either through work or some activity. This way we remove the mental and to a large extent the vital consciousness adding to the suffering. The body consciousness can then work better without interference from the mind and vital.
The second thing we can do is to spread out our consciousness into wideness through imagery or thought by contemplating the sea or the sky or the boundlessness of Space and the endlessness of Time.
The third thing is to use this intensity to go deep within into the source of pain. This leads us to the discovery of that little curled up spot in the ego carefully hidden behind coats of explanations and justifications. Once this is discovered one has to open and expose it to the Light with a sincere will to dissolve it. On the other hand, one can enter deeper into it and find the oneness and the luminous smile of the Divine Presence within us.
Finally one can offer the pain to the Divine Mother with a prayer not only for the relief of pain but also to remedy its central cause.
