This talks based on the Canto titled ‘The Issue’ from Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem Savitri. Here Sri Aurobindo has raised the question through Savitri whether destiny can be altered.
A large part of our existence lurks behind the threshold and participates in a secret commerce with All-life. But the hope is the future that is asleep in the Superconscient realms beyond the Mind. These begin to unravel as the aspirant proceeds upon the great Path and the unprecedented journey.
Behind the little surface life of man there are powers and forces that can make or mar his world. There are soul-powers asleep within his being even as there are demoniac and dark powers that lie in his subconscious tracts. Our reason is unable to fathom them let alone deal with them.
When the whole world was in the midst of thick ignorance, the Divine Mother descended on earth, took a human birth and also physically took the burden of humanity. The birth of Savitri symbolizes this unique phenomenon.
Savitri now looks within. She enters into the cosmic past, the past of creation itself. She uncovers in Her being the history of creation, the formation of matter by elemental energies, a gathering of forces around the little point of ego and behind it all seated the secret soul.
Savitri receives what can be called as the limbs of an integral yoga that cover each and every aspect of life, which essentially consists of dislodging the ego and desire-self and installing in its place the Divine Consciousness.
Savitri is face to face with the enormity of her grief as well as the enormity of her love. Even as she sits contemplating the curve of destiny she must choose, she hears an inner Command descending from the heights, a command that is a mandate and a reminder of her work and her mission..
