Opening Remarks
Savitri replies to the condescending arguments of Death.
Savitri speaks
But Savitri replied to the dark Power:
Savitri spoke to the dark Power that Death represents.
Dangerous music
“A dangerous music now thou findst, O Death,
Melting thy speech into harmonious pain,
And flut’st alluringly to tired hopes
Thy falsehoods mingled with sad strains of truth.
Savitri starts by admonishing Death for the dangerous music that is flowing through his speech melting into harmonious pain and luring tired hopes with sad strains of truth mingled with falsehood.
Savitri forbids
But I forbid thy voice to slay my soul.
Savitri forbids Death to slay her soul with his sad strains.
Savitri’s love
My love is not a hunger of the heart,
My love is not a craving of the flesh;
It came to me from God, to God returns.
Savitri affirms that her love is not a hunger of the heart nor is it a craving of the flesh. It has come to her from God and returns back to God.
A whisper of divinity
Even in all that life and man have marred,
A whisper of divinity still is heard,
A breath is felt from the eternal spheres.
Even in all that life and man have marred one can still hear a whisper of divinity and feel a breath from the eternal spheres come down and revivify earthly life.
Sweet fire-rhythm of passion
Allowed by Heaven and wonderful to man
A sweet fire-rhythm of passion chants to love.
A sweet fire-rhythm of passion, allowed by Heaven, chants to love and feels wonderful to man.
Voice of eternal Ecstasy
There is a hope in its wild infinite cry;
It rings with callings from forgotten heights,
And when its strains are hushed to high-winged souls
In their empyrean, its burning breath
Survives beyond, the rapturous core of suns
That flame for ever pure in skies unseen,
A voice of the eternal Ecstasy.
There is a hope in the wild infinite cry of love ringing with the call from forgotten heights. Even when the high strains of love are hushed upon earth its force survives in souls that climb high to the heavenly spheres. Its burning breath survives in the Beyond becoming one with rapturous core of Love in the Creator’s flaming heart. It flames forever pure in unseen skies as a voice of the eternal Ecstasy.
One day I shall behold
One day I shall behold my great sweet world
Put off the dire disguises of the gods,
Unveil from terror and disrobe from sin.
Savitri promises that one day she shall behold the great sweet world she has made. She shall put off the dire disguises of the gods and unveil the mask of terror and take off the robe of sin.
We shall draw near
Appeased we shall draw near our mother’s face,
We shall cast our candid souls upon her lap;
Then shall we clasp the ecstasy we chase,
Then shall we shudder with the long-sought god,
Then shall we find Heaven’s unexpected strain.
Then earth and mankind, appeased, draw nearer to the Creatrix face. Casting our candid souls upon her lap we shall clasp the ecstasy we chase. Then shall we shudder with the delight we have sought for long. Then shall we find the unexpected strain of music of the higher realms.
Rebel sons
Not only is there hope for godheads pure;
The violent and darkened deities
Leaped down from the one breast in rage to find
What the white gods had missed: they too are safe;
A mother’s eyes are on them and her arms
Stretched out in love desire her rebel sons.
Not only the gods and humanity moved by the god’s shall be uplifted but also the violent Asuras who revolted and turned against God, embodying the darkness can hope. They too are safe. They too will be converted and become the instruments of God. The Divine Mother is watching over them stretching her arms in love calling back her rebel sons.
Closing Remarks
Savitri gives a glimpse of the Divine Love that she embodies.
