Canto Seven. The Descent into Night
A mind absolved from life, made calm to know,
A heart divorced from the blindness and the pang,
The seal of tears, the bond of ignorance,
He turned to find that wide world-failure’s cause.
एक चित्त अब जीवनमुक्त हो, बोध-प्राप्ति हित शान्त था,
एक हृदय उस अन्धता और त्रास सेविलग हो हट गया,
अश्रुओं की मुद्रा से, अज्ञान के पाश से मुंह फेर
अश्वपति उस विशाल जग-निष्फलता का कारण खोजने मुड़ गया।
Away he looked from Nature’s visible face
And sent his gaze into the viewless Vast,
The formidable unknown Infinity,
Asleep behind the endless coil of things,
That carries the universe in its timeless breadths
And the ripples of its being are our lives.
प्राण-प्रकृति के प्रत्यक्ष आनन से उसने दूर अवलोका
और निज आत्म-द़ृष्टि से उस अद़ृश्य विराट् का अन्तर वेध डाला,
उस भयंकरी विकट अज्ञात शाश्वतता का,
जो पदार्थों के पीछे अन्तहीन कुण्डल में सुषुप्त है,
यह इस विश्व को निज कालातीत विस्तारों में वहन करती है
और इसकी सत्ता के बुलबुले हमारे जीवन हैं।
The worlds are built by its unconscious Breath
And Matter and Mind are its figures or its powers,
Our waking thoughts the output of its dreams.
इसकी अचित् प्राणवायु द्वारा ये लोक सृष्ट हुए हैं
और जड़तत्त्व औ’ मन-शक्ति इसी के आकार या इसकी ऊर्जाएं हैं,
हमारे जाग्रत् विचारों का उत्पादन इसके स्वप्नों से होता है।
The veil was rent that covers Nature’s depths:
He saw the fount of the world’s lasting pain
And the mouth of the black pit of Ignorance;
The evil guarded at the roots of life
Raised up its head and looked into his eyes.
प्राण-प्रकृति के गर्तों का आवरण पट चीर दिया:
योगी ने जग की स्थायी पीड़ा का वह उद़्गम देखा
और जड़ अज्ञान के कलुषित गर्त का मुख अवलोका;
जीवन की जड़ों पर जिस अशुभ अशिव का पहरा था
उसने निज शीश उठा योगी के नेत्रों में झांका।
On a dim bank where dies subjective Space,
From a stark ridge overlooking all that is,
A tenebrous awakened Nescience,
Her wide blank eyes wondering at Time and Form,
Stared at the inventions of the living Void
And the Abyss whence our beginnings rose.
एक धुंधले तट पर जहां दिक्काल की अहम्मन्यता मर जाती है,
एक नितान्त नग्न चोटी से समस्त अस्तित्व की उपेक्षा करते हुए
एक घोर अन्धकार ने आदि निश्चेतन को जगा दिया,
जिसने विशाल शून्य नेत्रों से काल और आकार पर स्तम्भित हो,
जीवन्त महाशून्य के आविष्कारों को घूरा
और उस घोर गर्त को देखा जहां से हमारा आदि उदित हुआ है।
Behind appeared a grey carved mask of Night
Watching the birth of all created things.
पीछे से महाकाल रात्रि का एक धूसर नक्काशी किया मुखौटा प्रकटा
जो सकलसृष्ट पदार्थों के जन्म का निरीक्षण कर रहा था।
A hidden Puissance conscious of its force,
A vague and lurking Presence everywhere,
A contrary Doom that threatens all things made,
A Death figuring as the dark seed of life,
Seemed to engender and to slay the world.[202]
एक गुप्त दैवी-शक्ति जो अपने बल के प्रति जाग्रत् है
एक अस्पष्ट और छिपी हुई सर्वत्र व्यापक घोर उपस्थिति है,
एक विरोधी विनाशकारिणी सकल सृष्ट पदार्थों को आशंकित करती है,
एक महामृत्यु जो जीवन के काल-बीज सम साकार थी,
वह इस जगत् की धात्री और संहारिणी प्रतीत हो रही थी।
Then from the sombre mystery of the gulfs
And from the hollow bosom of the Mask
Something crept forth that seemed a shapeless Thought.
तब उन खाड़ियों की रहस्यपूर्ण अंधता से
और उस भीषण मुखौटे की खोखली छाती से
कुछ रेंगता प्रकटा जो एक अरूपी घोर भाव प्रतीत होता था।
A fatal Influence upon creatures stole
Whose lethal touch pursued the immortal spirit,
On life was laid the haunting finger of Death
And overcast with error, grief and pain
The soul’s native will for truth and joy and light.
एक संघाती प्रभाव प्राणिमात्र पर चुपके से छा गया
जिसके विषैले स्पर्श ने उस अमर आत्मपुरुष का पीछा किया,
जीवन पर यम की मृत्यु का पंजा सदा के लिए कस दिया गया
और जीव की सत्य और हर्ष और प्रकाश की सहज कामना
भ्रान्ति, शोक और पीड़ा से ढक छिप गयी।
A deformation coiled that claimed to be
The being’s very turn, Nature’s true drive.
यह विकृति कुण्डलित थी जिसने घोषणा कर दी
कि वह जीव का यथार्थ स्वभाव थी, प्राण-प्रकृति की सत्य प्रेरणा थी।
A hostile and perverting Mind at work
In every corner ensconced of conscious life
Corrupted Truth with her own formulas;
Interceptor of the listening of the soul,
Afflicting knowledge with the hue of doubt
It captured the oracles of the occult gods,
Effaced the signposts of Life’s pilgrimage,
Cancelled the firm rock-edicts graved by Time,
And on the foundations of the cosmic Law
Erected its bronze pylons of misrule.
एक विद्वेषी और विकृत मन-शक्ति वहां कार्यरत थी
सचेत जीवन के प्रत्येक कोने में स्थापित थी
जो अपने स्वयं के सिद्धान्तों से सनातन सत्य को दूषित करती थी;
जीव की आत्म-श्रुति में वह व्यवधान डालती,
शंका के रंगों से आत्मज्ञान को आहत करती
इसने गुह्य देवताओं की भविष्यवाणियों को बन्दी बना,
महाप्राण की तीर्थ-यात्रा के संकेत स्तम्भों को मिटा डाला,
कालपुरुष द्वारा तक्षित द़ृढ़ शिला-लेखों को अमान्य कर दिया
और ब्रह्माण्डीय दिव्य विधान के मूलाधारों पर
अपनी अराजकता के कांस्य सिंहद्वारों को खड़ा कर दिया।
Even Light and Love by that cloaked danger’s spell
Turned from the brilliant nature of the gods
To fallen angels and misleading suns,
Became themselves a danger and a charm,
A perverse sweetness, heaven-born malefice:
Its power could deform divinest things.
उस आच्छादित खतरे के मोहपाश में बंधी पराज्योति औ’ दिव्य प्रेम भी
अपने देवत्व के प्रकाशमान स्वभाव से विमुख हो
पतित देवदूतों और भ्रामक प्रकाशों की ओर मुड़ गये,
और स्वयं एक खतरा और एक मोहपाश बन गये,
यह एक विकृत माधुरी, स्वर्ग में जन्मी अशुभता थीः
जिसकीशक्ति दिव्यतम वस्तुओं को कुरूप कर सकती थी।
A wind of sorrow breathed upon the world;
All thought with falsehood was besieged, all act
Stamped with defect or with frustration’s sign,
All high attempt with failure or vain success,
But none could know the reason of his fall.
इस संसार पर एक दुःख की हवा श्वासित होने लगी;
समस्त विचार-धारा एक मिथ्यात्व से जकड़ दी गयी,
सब कर्म पर दोष की मुहर लग गयी या कुण्ठा के चिह्न की,
सकल उत्तम प्रयास असफल रहता या अर्थहीन सफलता पाता,
किन्तु कोई भी अपने इस पतन का कारण नहीं जान सका।
The grey Mask whispered and though no sound was heard,
Yet in the ignorant heart a seed was sown
That bore black fruit of suffering, death and bale.
वह धूसररंगी भीषण मुखौटा फुसफुसाया पर कोई ध्वनि सुनायी नहीं दी,
तथापि अबोध अन्तर में एक बीज बो दिया गया
जिससे व्यथा, मृत्यु और विपत्ति का कलुषित फल उत्पन्न हुआ।
Out of the chill steppes of a bleak Unseen
Invisible, wearing the Night’s grey mask,[203]
Arrived the shadowy dreadful messengers,
Invaders from a dangerous world of power,
Ambassadors of evil’s absolute.
एक उजाड़ निरानन्दी अद़ृश्य के शीत मरुस्थलों से बाहर निकल,
भीषणरात्रि का धूसर मुखौटा पहने हुए अद़ृश्य,
छायारूपी भयंकर प्रेत सम सन्देशवाहक आ पहुंचे,
वे एक खतरनाक शक्ति के जगत् से आये आक्रमणकारी थे
अशुभ पाप के एकाधिपति के राजदूत थे।
In silence the inaudible voices spoke,
Hands that none saw planted the fatal grain,
No form was seen, yet a dire work was done,
An iron decree in crooked uncials written
Imposed a law of sin and adverse fate.
उस सन्नाटे में अश्रुत वाणियां बोलतीं
अलक्ष्य हाथों ने घातक दानों को बो दिया,
कोई आकार दिखता नहीं, फिर भी घोर कर्म सम्पादित हो जाता,
कुटिल बृहदाकारी लिपि में एक लौह आदेश लिखा था
जिसने पाप और विरोधी दुर्भाग्य का एक विधान आरोपित कर दिया।
Life looked at him with changed and sombre eyes:
Her beauty he saw and the yearning heart in things
That with a little happiness is content,
Answering to a small ray of truth or love;
He saw her gold sunlight and her far blue sky,
Her green of leaves and hue and scent of flowers
And the charm of children and the love of friends
And the beauty of women and kindly hearts of men,
But saw too the dreadful Powers that drive her moods
And the anguish she has strewn upon her ways,
Fate waiting on the unseen steps of men
And her evil and sorrow and last gift of death.
अब प्राणजीवन ने योगी की ओर बदली हुई उदास द़ृष्टि से देखा:
योगी ने प्राणशक्ति का सौन्दर्य और पदार्थों के अन्तर में जाग्रत् लालसा देखी
जो एक अल्प हर्ष से सन्तुष्ट हो जाती,
स्रत्य और प्रेम की एक नन्ही किरण को उत्तर देती;
उसने उसकी स्वर्णिम धूप और उसके सुदूर नील गगन को देखा,
उसके पल्लवों की हरीतिमा और पुष्पों के रंग औ’ गंध को
और बालकों की मोहकता और मित्रों के बन्धुत्व को
नारियों के लावण्य और पुरुषों की सहृदयता को,
किन्तु उन भीषण घोरशक्तियों को भी देखा जो उसके भावों की संचालिका हैं
और उस वेदना को जो वह निज मार्गों पर बिखराती चलती है,
मनुष्यों के अनदेखे कदमों पर प्रतीक्षा में बैठी नियति देखी
और उसके पाप और दुःख और मृत्यु की अन्तिम भेंट देखी।
A breath of disillusion and decadence
Corrupting watched for Life’s maturity
And made to rot the full grain of the soul:
Progress became a purveyor of Death.
मोह-भंगऔर ह्रास की एक श्वास दूषित होते हुए भी
जीवनीशक्ति की परिपक्वता पर ध्यान रखे थी
और यह चैत्यपुरुष के परिपूर्ण दाने को सड़ा देती थी;
प्रगति यमराज की एक रसद-भण्डारी बनी हुई थी।
A world that clung to the law of a slain Light
Cherished the putrid corpses of dead truths,
Hailed twisted forms as things free, new and true,
Beauty from ugliness and evil drank
Feeling themselves guests at a banquet of the gods
And tasted corruption like a high-spiced food.
एक लोक जो एक निहत दिव्य-प्रकाश के विधान से चिपका हुआ था
और मृत-सत्यों के गलित शवों को सम्भाल प्रेम से रखता था,
विकृत रूपों को मुक्त, नवीन और सत्य वस्तुओं सम स्वागत करता,
जो कुरूपता और पाप के संग सौन्दर्य का छक कर पान करते
और अपने को देवों के एक भोज के अतिथि सम समझते
और भ्रष्टाचार को मसालेदार भोजन सम स्वाद से खाते।
A darkness settled on the heavy air;
It hunted the bright smile from Nature’s lips
And slew the native confidence in her heart
And put fear’s crooked look into her eyes.
उस बोझिल वातावरण पर तमस् का एक अंधेरा छाया हुआ था;
यह प्रकृति देवी के अधरों की प्रसन्न स्मित का शिकारी था
और उसके हृदयवासी सहज आत्म-विश्वास पर घात कर
उसने उसके नयनों में भय की कुटिल द़ृष्टि बसा दी थी।
The lust that warps the spirit’s natural good
Replaced by a manufactured virtue and vice[204]
The frank spontaneous impulse of the soul:
Afflicting Nature with the dual’s lie,
Their twin values whetted a forbidden zest,
Made evil a relief from spurious good,
The ego battened on righteousness and sin
And each became an instrument of Hell.
वह वासना जो आत्मा के स्वाभाविक शुभ को विकृत कर देती है
उसने प्राण पुरुष के मुक्त सहज आवेग को स्थानान्तरित कर
अपने द्वारा गठित एक पाप-पुण्य के द्वन्द्व में बदल दिया:
मानव-स्वभाव को द्वन्द्वों के झूठ से आहत कर डाला,
उनके जुड़वां मूल्यों ने एक वर्जित रस का स्वाद उत्तेजित कर दिया
मिथ्या भलाई की तुलना में पाप एक मुक्तिदाता बन गया,
अहंकार पुण्य और पाप दोनों पर फूलने फलने लगा
और प्रत्येक हीमहा-नारकीयता का एक यन्त्र बन गया।
In rejected heaps by a monotonous road
The old simple delights were left to lie
On the wasteland of life’s descent to Night.
घोर अन्धकार में प्राणजीवन के पतन के उस उजाड़ क्षेत्र में
एक नीरस उपेक्षित पथ पर उन पुरातन सहज सुखों को
अस्वीकृत बहिष्कृत ढेरियों में पड़ा छोड़ दिया गया।
All glory of life dimmed tarnished into a doubt;
All beauty ended in an aging face;
All power was dubbed a tyranny cursed by God
And Truth a fiction needed by the mind;
The chase of joy was now a tired hunt;
All knowledge was left a questioning Ignorance.
जीवन कीसकल भव्यता धुंधली बदरंग हो एक शंका बन गयी,
सम्पूर्ण सौन्दर्य का अन्त एक जराग्रस्त मुख में हो गया;
समस्त बल-सत्ता को एक तानाशाही नाम दिया जो ईश्वर द्वारा शापित थी
और शाश्वत सत्य मानव मन हित आवश्यक एक कल्पित कथा थी;
हर्ष के पीछे भागना अब एक थकाती आखेट थी;
सम्पूर्ण प्रज्ञा अब एक प्रश्न करती अविद्या बन रह गयी थी।
As from a womb obscure he saw emerge
The body and visage of a dark Unseen
Hidden behind the fair outside of life.
अश्वपति ने मानों एक धूमिल गर्भाशय से निकलते देखा
एक अस्पष्ट अनदेखी देह और मुख को
जो जीवन की मनमोहक उज्ज्वल बहिर्मुखों के पीछे छिपी है।
Its dangerous commerce is our suffering’s cause.
इसका संकटभरा संसर्ग ही हमारी यातना का कारण है।
Its breath is a subtle poison in men’s hearts;
All evil starts from that ambiguous face.
इसका श्वास मानव के अन्तरों में एक सूक्ष्म विष है;
सकल अनिष्ट उस धूमिल संदिग्ध आनन से आरम्भ होते हैं।
A peril haunted now the common air;
The world grew full of menacing Energies,
And wherever turned for help or hope his eyes,
In field and house, in street and camp and mart,
He met the prowl and stealthy come and go
Of armed disquieting bodied Influences.
अब सामान्य वातावरण पर एक प्रेत सम संकट छाया हुआ था;
यह संसार भयंकरी प्रबल घोर ऊर्जाओं से पूर्ण रूप से भर गया,
और उसने निज नेत्रों को सहायता या आशा हित जिधर भी घुमाया
खेत और भवन में, गली और डेरे और बाजार में,
चोरी से दबे पांव आते जाते और घूमते
मानों अशान्त करते सशस्त्र सदेह दुष्प्रभाव ही मिले।
A march of goddess figures dark and nude
Alarmed the air with grandiose unease;
Appalling footsteps drew invisibly near,
Shapes that were threats invaded the dream-light,
And ominous beings passed him on the road
Whose very gaze was a calamity:
A charm and sweetness sudden and formidable,
Faces that raised alluring lips and eyes [205]
Approached him armed with beauty like a snare,
But hid a fatal meaning in each line
And could in a moment dangerously change.
काली और नग्न देवी आकृतियों की एक प्रयाण यात्रा
प्रभावशाली घोर अशान्त आशंका से वातावरण को क्षुब्ध करती;
घोर डरावने कदमों की अद़ृश्य आहटें समीप आने लगीं,
गर्जन-तर्जन करती आकृतियों ने उसके स्वप्न-आलोक पर आक्रमण कर दिया,
और उसके मार्ग से जो अशुभ-सत्ताएं गुजरतीं
उनकी कुद़ृष्टि मात्र उसके लिए एक विपत्ति ले आती:
एक मोहिनी और माधुरी जो आकस्मिक और दुर्जेय थीं,
वे अपने लुभाते अधरों और आमन्त्रण देते नयनों को ऊपर उठा
और एक पाशसम सुन्दरता से सज्जित हो उसके पास आयीं,
किन्तु प्रत्येक रेखा एक घातक अर्थ छिपाये थी
और जो पलभर में संकट में परिवर्तित हो सकती थी।
But he alone discerned that screened attack.
किन्तु केवल योगी ही उस छिपे आक्रमण को देख पाया।
A veil upon the inner vision lay,
A force was there that hid its dreadful steps;
All was belied, yet thought itself the truth;
All were beset but knew not of the siege:
For none could see the authors of their fall.
मानव की अन्तर्द़ृष्टि पर एक पर्दा पड़ा है,
एक शक्ति वहां थी जिसने इसके विकराल कदमों को छिपा लिया था;
सकल मिथ्यावाद था, तथापि स्वयं को सत्य ही सोचता;
सब चहुं ओर से घिरे थे किन्तु अपनी घेराबन्दी के विषय में अनजान थे:
क्योंकि वहां किसी को भी अपने पतन के स्रष्टा दिखायी नहीं देते थे।
Aware of some dark wisdom still withheld
That was the seal and warrant of this strength,
He followed the track of dim tremendous steps
Returning to the night from which they came.
योगी अब भी किसी पीछे दमित काली प्रज्ञा के प्रति सचेत था
जो इस घोर शक्ति की मुद्रा और आदेशपत्र था,
उसने उन धूमिल भीषण पदचापों के पथ का अनुसरण किया
जो उस रात्रि की ओर लौट रहे थे जहां से वे आये थे।
A tract he reached unbuilt and owned by none:
There all could enter but none stay for long.
वह एक अनिर्मित और स्वामीहीन क्षेत्र में जा पहुंचाः
यहां प्रवेश तो सब कर सकते थे किन्तु कोई भी अधिक देर ठहर नहीं सकता था।
It was a no man’s land of evil air,
A crowded neighbourhood without one home,
A borderland between the world and hell.
यह एक लावारिस भूमि अशुभ वातावरण का क्षेत्र था,
एक भीड़-भरा पड़ोस किन्तु आवास एक भी नहीं था,
इस जगत् और नरक के मध्य सीमावर्ती प्रदेश था।
There unreality was Nature’s lord:
It was a space where nothing could be true,
For nothing was what it had claimed to be:
A high appearance wrapped a spacious void.
उस अपरा प्रकृति का स्वामी असत्य था
यह एक ऐसी दिशा थी जहां कुछ भी सत्य नहीं हो सकता था,
क्योंकिवहां कुछ भी वैसा नहीं था जैसा वह होने की घोषणा करता:
एक उन्नत दिखता आभास जो बाहर से एक सुन्दर शून्य को लपेटे था।
Yet nothing would confess its own pretence
Even to itself in the ambiguous heart:
A vast deception was the law of things;
Only by that deception they could live.
तथापि कोई भी अपने कपटी हृदय में स्वयं भी
अपने आत्म पाखण्ड को नहीं स्वीकारता था:
एक विशाल छलावा ही पदार्थों का विधान था;
केवल उस प्रवंचना के द्वारा ही वे जीवित रह सकते थे।
An unsubstantial Nihil guaranteed
The falsehood of the forms this Nature took
And made them seem awhile to be and live.
एक असार महा असत् ने प्रतिश्रुति कर दी
प्राण-प्रकृति द्वारा ग्रहीत इन आकारों के मिथ्यात्व की
और उन्हें होने और जीने देने के क्षणिक आभास की।
A borrowed magic drew them from the Void;
They took a shape and stuff that was not theirs
And showed a colour that they could not keep,
Mirrors to a fantasm of reality.
एक उधार का इन्द्रजाल उन्हें महाशून्य से खींच लाया था;
उन्होंने एक आकार और द्रव्य धर लिया जो उनका नहीं था
और एक आभा जो दर्शाते थे वे उसे रख नहीं पाते थे,
वे यथार्थ के एक छायाभासी दर्पण थे।
Each rainbow brilliance was a splendid lie;
A beauty unreal graced a glamour face.
प्रत्येक इन्द्रधनुषी जगमगाहट एक शानदार छलावा था;
एक बनावटी सुन्दरता एक मुख आकर्षणकी शोभा थी।
Nothing could be relied on to remain:[206]
Joy nurtured tears and good an evil proved,
But never out of evil one plucked good:
Love ended early in hate, delight killed with pain,
Truth into falsity grew and death ruled life.
किसी पर भी स्थायित्व का भरोसा नहीं होता:
हर्ष अश्रुओं को पोषता और शुभ एक अशुभ सिद्ध होता,
किन्तु वह किसी भी बुराई से अब तक कोई भलाई नहीं चुन पाया था:
प्रेम शीघ्र ही घृणा में बदल जाता, सुख पीड़ा द्वारा मार दिया जाता,
सत्य मिथ्या बन विकसित होता और जीवन पर मृत्यु का शासन था।
A Power that laughed at the mischief of the world,
An irony that joined the world’s contraries
And flung them into each other’s arms to strive,
Put a sardonic rictus on God’s face.
एक महाशक्ति जो इस जगत् की शैतानियों पर हंसती थी;
एक विडम्बना थी जिसने इस जगत् के विरोधी द्वन्द्वोंको जोड़ा था
और प्रतिस्पर्धा करने को एक-दूसरे की बांहों में उन्हें फेंक दिया था,
ईश्वर के मुख पर एक कटु व्यंग्य का भाव टांक दिया था।
Aloof, its influence entered everywhere
And left a cloven hoof-mark on the breast;
A twisted heart and a strange sombre smile
Mocked at the sinister comedy of life.
विलग होने पर भी, इसका प्रभाव प्रत्येक स्थान में प्रवेश कर गया
और जीवन की छाती पर एक फटे खुर का चिह्न छोड़ गया था;
एक वक्र कुटिल हृदय और एक विचित्र खिन्न मुस्कुराहट
जीवन के कटु अभागे अमंगली प्रहसन का मानों उपहास करती।
Announcing the advent of a perilous Form
An ominous tread softened its dire footfall
That none might understand or be on guard;
None heard until a dreadful grasp was close.
एक भयंकर भीमाकार के आगमन की घोषणा करती
एक अशुभ चाल निज भीषण पदचापों को कोमलता से धरती
जिससे कोई भी समझ न पाये या सतर्क न हो पाये,
अत: कोई भी सुन न पाया जब तक एक भीषण पंजा समीप न आ गया।
Or else all augured a divine approach,
An air of prophecy felt, a heavenly hope,
Listened for a gospel, watched for a new star.
अन्यथा सबको एक दिव्य आगमन का शुभ आभास ही मिला,
एक शुभ भावी वातावरण का अनुभव पाया, एक स्वर्गिक आशा बंधी,
एक आदेश सुनायी पड़ा, एक नव-तारे के उदय को देखा गया।
The Fiend was visible, but cloaked in light;
He seemed a helping angel from the skies:
He armed untruth with Scripture and the Law;
He deceived with wisdom, with virtue slew the soul
And led to perdition by the heavenward path.
प्रकाश का चोला धारण कर अब वह घोर पाखण्डी खल दिखने लगा;
वह सुर-लोकों से आया एक सहायक देवदूत सम लगता:
उसने मिथ्यावाद को शास्त्र और दिव्य विधान से सजा दिया;
वह ज्ञान के द्वारा छल करता, पुण्य द्वारा अन्तरात्मा का वध करता
और देवलोक के मार्गों से सर्वनाश कीओर ले जाता।
A lavish sense he gave of power and joy,
And when arose the warning from within,
He reassured the ear with dulcet tones,
Or took the mind captive in its own net;
His rigorous logic made the false seem true.
वह सत्ता और आनन्द का एक भरपूर बोध प्राणी को देता,
और जब अन्तर से चेतावनी का स्फुरण उठता,
तब वह श्रवण में मधुर धुनों से आश्वासन देता,
या मन को अपने निजी मोहपाश में बंदी बना रखता;
उसका कठोर तीव्र तर्क असत्य को सत्य बना दिखाता।
Amazing the elect with holy lore
He spoke as with the very voice of God.
मुख्य चुनिंदा भद्रजनों को पुनीत धार्मिक कथा से चकित कर
वह ऐसे बोलता मानों प्रभु की वाणी ही उससे मुखरित होती हो।
The air was full of treachery and ruse;
Truth-speaking was a stratagem in that place;
Ambush lurked in a smile and peril made
Safety its cover, trust its entry’s gate:
Falsehood came laughing with the eyes of truth;[207]
Each friend might turn an enemy or spy,
The hand one clasped ensleeved a dagger’s stab
And an embrace could be Doom’s iron cage.
यह वातावरण धूर्तता और प्रपंच से भरा हुआ था;
सत्य-भाषण उस स्थान में एक कूटनीति की चाल थी;
एक स्मित में कपट-घात लगाता और विपत्ति सुरक्षा के आवरण में
छिप आती,विश्वास इसका प्रवेश द्वार होता:
सत्य के नेत्रों से हंसता असत्य अन्दर प्रवेश कर जाता;
कोई भी मित्र एक शत्रु या गुप्तचर निकल सकता था,
बंधुत्व से जुड़े हाथ की आस्तीन में एक छुरे का छिपाघात हो सकता था
और एक आलिंगन सर्वघाती लौह-पिंजरा बन सकता था।
Agony and danger stalked their trembling prey
And softly spoke as to a timid friend:
Attack sprang suddenly vehement and unseen;
Fear leaped upon the heart at every turn
And cried out with an anguished dreadful voice;
It called for one to save but none came near.
यातना और विपत्ति अपने भय से कम्पित शिकार का पीछा करते
और मृदु वाणी में ऐसे बोलते जैसे कोई भीरु मित्र से बोले:
हठात् प्रचण्ड तीव्रता से अद़ृश्य उछल हमला कर देते;
प्रत्येक मोड़ पर भय से हृदय उछल बाहर आ जाता
और एक सन्तापपूर्ण विकराल वाणी में चिल्लाता;
यह रक्षा के लिए पुकारता किन्तु कोई समीप न आता।
All warily walked, for death was ever close;
Yet caution seemed a vain expense of care,
For all that guarded proved a deadly net,
And when after long suspense salvation came
And brought a glad relief disarming strength,
It served as a smiling passage to worse fate.
सब सावधान हो चले जाते,क्योंकि मृत्यु सदैव समीप छिपी होती;
फिर सावधानी सुरक्षा हित एक निष्फल सतर्कता व्यर्थ लगती थी,
क्योंकि समस्त सुरक्षा एक प्राणहारी पाश सिद्ध होती,
और जब दीर्घ अनिश्चय के बाद मुक्ति आयी
और बलवान् को शस्त्रहीन करने की एक सुखी राहत लायी,
तब यह एक बदतर दुर्भाग्य कीओर जाती एक सहज मार्ग बन गयी।
There was no truce and no safe place to rest;
One dared not slumber or put off one’s arms:
It was a world of battle and surprise.
वहां कोई संधि-स्थल नहीं था और विश्रामहित कोई सुरक्षित स्थान नहीं था;
निज हथियार उतार कर कोई सोने का साहस नहीं कर पाता:
यह संग्राम और अप्रत्याशित घटनाओं का एक संसार था।
All who were there lived for themselves alone;
All warred against all, but with a common hate
Turned on the mind that sought some higher good;
Truth was exiled lest she should dare to speak
And hurt the heart of darkness with her light
Or bring her pride of knowledge to blaspheme
The settled anarchy of established things.
वहां पर सब केवल अपने लिए ही जीवित रहते;
सब आपस में एक-दूसरे के विरुद्ध लड़ते, किन्तु किसी उच्च खोज में
लगे चित्त के विरुद्ध एक सम्मिलित घृणा से टूट पड़ते;
सत्य वहां से निर्वासित था कि कहीं वह बोलने का साहस न करे
और अन्धकार के अन्तर को निज ज्योति से व्यथित न कर डाले
या स्थापित वस्तुओं की इस प्रतिष्ठित अराजकता का
अपने ज्ञान के गर्व द्वारा उसके देवत्व का निरादर न करे।
Then the scene changed, but kept its dreadful core:
Altering its form the life remained the same.
तब वह द़ृश्य बदला, किन्तु अपना भीषण मर्मस्थल स्थापित रखा:
अपना रूप बदलकर भी प्राण वही पुराना ही रहा।
A capital was there without a State:
It had no ruler, only groups that strove.
बिना एक राज्य के वहां एक राजधानी थी;
जिसका कोई शासक नहीं था, केवल संघर्ष में लगे वर्ग थे।
He saw a city of ancient Ignorance
Founded upon a soil that knew not Light.
योगी ने आदि पुरातन अविद्या का एक नगर देखा
जो एक ऐसी भूमि पर बसा था जो परा प्रकाश से अनजाना था।
There each in his own darkness walked alone:
Only they agreed to differ in Evil’s paths,
To live in their own way for their own selves
Or to enforce a common lie and wrong;[208]
There Ego was lord upon his peacock seat
And falsehood sat by him, his mate and queen:
The world turned to them as Heaven to Truth and God.
वहां पर प्रत्येक अपने निजी अन्धकार में अकेला विचरण करता:
वे केवल घोर पाप के मार्गों के भेदों में सहमत होते,
अपने स्वार्थों के लिए अपने ही ढंग से जीवित रहते
या एक सर्वसामान्य असत्य और दुष्कर्म हित दबाव डालते;
वहां पर ‘अहम्’ निज मयूर-सिंहासन पर प्रभु बना आसीन था
उसके पार्श्व में ‘मिथ्या’ उसकी सहचरी रानी विराजमान थी:
वह जगत् उनके चहुं ओर ऐसे घूमताजैसे स्वर्ग परम सत्य और ईश्वर कीओर।
Injustice justified by firm decrees
The sovereign weights of Error’s legalised trade,
But all the weights were false and none the same;
Ever she watched with her balance and a sword
Lest any sacrilegious word expose
The sanctified formulas of her old misrule.
अन्याय को द़ृढ़ आज्ञप्तियों द्वारा न्यायोचित ठहराते
घोर मिथ्या के व्यापार राजकीय बांटों द्वारा वैध बनाते,
किन्तु सब बांट झूठे थे और एक भी समान नहीं था;
वह निरन्तर अपनी तुला और तलवार लिये निरीक्षण रखती,
कि कहीं कोई एक भी धर्मविरोधी वाणी बोल न दे
उसके पुरातन अराजकता के पवित्र सूत्रों का भण्डा न फोड़ दे।
In high professions wrapped self-will walked wide
And licence stalked prating of order and right:
There was no altar raised to Liberty;
True freedom was abhorred and hunted down:
Harmony and tolerance nowhere could be seen;
Each group proclaimed its dire and naked Law.
मुख्य व्यवसायों में लिपटी स्वेच्छाचारिता खुलकर विचरती,
उच्छृंखलता अधिकार और व्यवस्था के विषय में बकबक करती घूमती:
स्वाधीनता की देवी हित कोईपूजा-वेदी नहीं रची गयी थी;
सच्ची स्वतन्त्रता से घृणा की जाती और सताने हित पकड़ ली जाती:
सहयोगिता और सहिष्णुता वहां कहीं दिखायी नहीं देती थी;
प्रत्येक वर्ग अपने भीषण और नग्न घोर विधान की घोषणा करता।
A frame of ethics knobbed with scriptural rules
Or a theory passionately believed and praised
A table seemed of high Heaven’s sacred code.
नीति-आचारों के एक ढांचे को धार्मिक नियमों से बांध दिया गया था
अथवा एक सिद्धान्त था जिस पर वे अन्धविश्वास करते और प्रशंसा करते
जैसे वह उन्नत स्वर्ग की पवित्र नियमावली की एक सारिणी हो।
A formal practice mailed and iron-shod
Gave to a rude and ruthless warrior kind
Drawn from the savage bowels of the earth
A proud stern poise of harsh nobility,
A civic posture rigid and formidable.
एक औपचारिक पद्धति जो सुरक्षित और लौह-नियम से बंधी थी
उसने पृथ्वी की जंगली गुफाओं से निकली
एक क्रूर-असभ्य लडा़कू किस्म की जाति को
एक कठोर कुलीनता की गर्वीली भंगिमा प्रदान कर दी,
एक अनम्य और दुर्दान्त नागरिक उपाधि दे दी थी।
But all their private acts belied the pose:
Power and utility were their Truth and Right,
An eagle rapacity clawed its coveted good,
Beaks pecked and talons tore all weaker prey.
किन्तु उनके समस्त व्यक्तिगत कार्य इस आडम्बर को झुठलाते:
बल सामर्थ्य और उपभोग उनके चरम सत्य और दिव्य अधिकार थे,
एक चील-सम लोलुप हिंसकतासे अपने ईप्सित पदार्थ पर झपटते,
चोंच से छेदते और पंजों से समस्त निर्बल शिकार को फाड़ डालते।
In their sweet secrecy of pleasant sins
Nature they obeyed and not a moralist God.
अपने रुचिपूर्ण पापों की मीठी प्रिय गोपनीयता में
वे अपने स्वभाव का अनुसरण करते, किसी एक नैतिक ईश्वर का नहीं।
Inconscient traders in bundles of contraries,
They did what in others they would persecute;
When their eyes looked upon their fellow’s vice,
An indignation flamed, a virtuous wrath;
Oblivious of their own deep-hid offence,
Moblike they stoned a neighbour caught in sin.
विरोधताओं की गठरियों के घोर अचित् व्यापारी,
वे जिस कार्य के लिए दूसरों को दण्ड देते स्वयं वही कार्य करते;
जब उनकी द़ृष्टि अपने साथियों के कुकर्म पर पड़ती,
तब एक क्रोधाग्नि से जल उठते, एक धार्मिक नैतिक आक्रोश से भर जाते;
आत्मगहनता में छिपे अपने अपराध को विस्मृत कर देते,
और पाप में पकडे गये पड़ोसी को उत्तेजित भीड़ सम पत्थरों से मार डालते।
A pragmatist judge within passed false decrees,[209]
Posed worst iniquities on equity’s base,
Reasoned ill actions just, sanctioned the scale
Of the merchant ego’s interest and desire.
उनके अन्तर का एक व्यावहारिकतावादी न्यायाधीश मिथ्या आदेश पारित कर देता,
समता को आधार सम दिखा निकृष्टतम अनाचारों को प्रस्तुत किया जाता,
तर्क द्वारा दुष्कर्मों को उचित ठहराता, उसी तुला को स्वीकृति मिलती
जो व्यापारी के स्वार्थ और इच्छा के अहम् कीओर झुकती।
Thus was a balance kept, the world could live.
इस प्रकार एक सन्तुलन रखता, यह संसार जीवित रहता।
A zealot fervour pushed their ruthless cults,
All faith not theirs bled scourged as heresy;
They questioned, captived, tortured, burned or smote
And forced the soul to abandon right or die.
एक कट्टर उन्माद उनके निर्दय सम्प्रदायों को बढा़वा देता
सकल विश्वास जो उनके अपने नहीं थे उन्हें काफिरों के रक्त से नहला दिया जाता;
उन्हें सन्देह से देखते,बन्दीबना यातना देते, जला या काट डालते
और उस जीव को सत्य छोड़ देने या मर जाने को बाध्य करते।
Amid her clashing creeds and warring sects
Religion sat upon a blood-stained throne.
उस जगत् के टकराते सम्प्रदायों और युद्धरत वर्गों के मध्य
धर्म एक रक्तरंजित सिंहासन पर विराजमान था।
A hundred tyrannies oppressed and slew
And founded unity upon fraud and force.
शत-शत निरंकुशताएं दमन करतीं और वध करतीं
और छलकपट और बल द्वारा एकता कायम रखी जाती थी।
Only what seemed was prized as real there:
The ideal was a cynic ridicule’s butt:
Hooted by the crowd, mocked by enlightened wits,
Spiritual seeking wandered outcasted,—
A dreamer’s self-deceiving web of thought
Or mad chimera deemed or hypocrite’s fake,
Its passionate instinct trailed through minds obscure
Lost in the circuits of the Ignorance.
केवल जो दिखायी देता उसी को वहां सत्य मान पूजा जाता;
दिव्य-आदर्श तो एक सनक या उपहास का विषय था;
भीड़ द्वारा तिरस्कृत, हाजिरजवाबियों द्वारा उपहासित
आत्म-खोजी वहां बहिष्कृत हो भटकता,-
एक स्वप्नद्रष्टा के आत्म-प्रवंचक विचार का ताना-बाना
एक उन्मादी कपोल-कल्पना या पाखण्डी का छलावा माना जाता,
प्राण का आवेशमय सहजबोध मनों की अंधी राहों पर घिसटता
अन्धे-अज्ञान के गोल घेरों में खोया भटकता फिरता।
A lie was there the truth and truth a lie.
एक मिथ्या वहांसत्य था और सत्य एक असत्य था।
Here must the traveller of the upward way—
For daring Hell’s kingdoms winds the heavenly route—
Pause or pass slowly through that perilous space,
A prayer upon his lips and the great Name.
ऊर्ध्वगामी यात्री को इसी मार्ग से गुजरना पड़ता है
क्योंकि नरक की राजधानियों की चुनौती स्वीकार कर वह स्वर्ग पथ पर बढ़ता है-
उस खतरनाक दिशा के मध्य विराम लेता या धीरे से निकलते हुए
उसके होठों पर एक प्रार्थना और प्रभु के नाम का जाप था।
If probed not all discernment’s keen spear-point,
He might stumble into falsity’s endless net.
यदि सम्पूर्ण विवेकबोध की तीव्र नाक से वह भली-भांति परीक्षण न करता
तो मिथ्यात्व के अनन्त पाश में ठोकर खा गिर सकता था।
Over his shoulder often he must look back
Like one who feels on his neck an enemy’s breath;
Else stealing up behind a treasonous blow
Might prostrate cast and pin to unholy soil,
Pierced through his back by Evil’s poignant stake.
उसे अकसर निज कन्धों के ऊपर पीछे देखना पड़ता
उस व्यक्ति सम जो निज ग्रीवा पर एक शत्रु का श्वास अनुभव करता है;
अन्यथा पीछे चुपके से एक राजद्रोही आघात का प्रहार
उसे धराशायी कर उस अपवित्र धरती से जकड़ सकता था,
महापाप का तीक्ष्ण अग्निदण्ड उसकी पीठ में बिंध सकता था।
So might one fall on the Eternal’s road
Forfeiting the spirit’s lonely chance in Time
And no news of him reach the waiting gods,
Marked “missing” in the register of souls,[210]
His name the index of a failing hope,
The position of a dead remembered star.
इस प्रकार चिरन्तन के पथ पर किसी का भी पतन
युगान्तरों में प्राप्त अपनी आत्मा का एकाकी अवसर खो सकता है
और प्रतीक्षारत देवताओं के पास उसका कोई समाचार तक नहीं पहुंचता
आत्माओं की पंजिका में वह ‘‘गुमशुदा’’ अंकित हो जाता है,
उसका नाम एक विफल आशा की तालिका में आ जाता,
यह एक मृत तारे की स्मृति का स्थान है।
Only were safe who kept God in their hearts:
Courage their armour, faith their sword, they must walk,
The hand ready to smite, the eye to scout,
Casting a javelin regard in front,
Heroes and soldiers of the army of Light.
केवल वे ही सुरक्षित रहते हैं जो प्रभु नाम निज हृदय में रमा रखते हैं:
साहस उनका कवच, श्रद्धा तलवार है, उन्हें सतत चलते रहना है,
उनके हाथ प्रहार को तत्पर, नेत्र सतर्क पहरा देते,
जो लक्ष्य पर द़ृष्टि को एक भाले सम सामने फेंकते,
वे परा-प्रकाश की सेना के महावीर और योद्धा हैं।
Hardly even so, the grisly danger past,
Released into a calmer purer air,
They dared at length to breathe and smile once more.
इतना करने पर भी अति कठिनाई से, उस वीभत्स संकट को पार कर,
वे एक शुचितर शान्त वातावरण में पहुंच मुक्ति पाते
और अन्त में एक बार फिर शान्ति के श्वास ले मुस्कुराने का साहस करते।
Once more they moved beneath a real sun.
एक बार पुन: वे सत्य सूर्य तले गतिशील होते हैं।
Though Hell claimed rule, the spirit still had power.
यद्यपि घोर नरक शासन का अधिकार जताता, फिर भी आत्मा शक्तिशाली है।
This No-man’s-land he passed without debate;
Him the heights missioned, him the Abyss desired:
None stood across his way, no voice forbade.
योगी इस स्वत्वहीन प्रदेश को बिना किसी वाद-विवाद के पार कर गया;
उच्चताओं का वह दूत था,घोर गर्त को वह काम्य थाः
किसी ने उसका मार्ग नहीं रोका, किसी वाणी ने निषेध नहीं किया।
For swift and easy is the downward path,
And now towards the Night was turned his face.
क्योंकि अवरोहण का मार्ग सहज और शीघ्रगामी होता है,
और अब वह घोर रात्रि की ओर मुख करके खड़ा था।
A greater darkness waited, a worse reign,
If worse can be where all is evil’s extreme;
Yet to the cloaked the uncloaked is naked worst.
एक घोरतर अन्धकार वहां घात लगाये बैठा था, यह निकृष्टतम राज्य था,
यदि निकृष्टतम हो सकता है जहां समस्त पाप की चरमावस्था है;
तथापि आवृत से अनावृत नग्नता तो और भी नीचतर है।
There God and Truth and the supernal Light
Had never been or else had power no more.
वहां ईश्वर और परम सत्य और परा-प्रकाश का
अस्तित्व कभी नहीं रहा या कभी शक्तिशाली नहीं बना।
As when one slips in a deep moment’s trance
Over mind’s border into another world,
He crossed a boundary whose stealthy trace
Eye could not see but only the soul feel.
क्योंकि जैसे कोई एक क्षण की गहन समाधि में
मन की सीमा पार कर अन्य लोक में प्रवेश कर जाता है,
वैसे ही योगी ने एक सीमा पार कर ली जिसका गुप्त आकार
आंखों ने नहीं देखा पर आत्मा ने अनुभव किया।
Into an armoured fierce domain he came
And saw himself wandering like a lost soul
Amid grimed walls and savage slums of Night.
अब वह एक कवचित भीषण भयानक राज्य में पहुंच गया था
और स्वयं को एक खोये प्राणी सम भटकते पाया
घृणित परिधियों के मध्य और अज्ञरात्रि के पाशविक बसेरों में।
Around him crowded grey and squalid huts
Neighbouring proud palaces of perverted Power,
Inhuman quarters and demoniac wards.
उसके चहुं ओर भूरी धूमिल और कुत्सित झोंपड़ों की भीड़ थी
जो विकृत आसुरी बल के गर्वीले महलों के पड़ोस में थीं,
अमानुषी बस्तियां और पैशाचिक कोठरियां थीं।
A pride in evil hugged its wretchedness;
A misery haunting splendour pressed those fell
Dun suburbs of the cities of dream-life.[211]
बुराई के एक गर्व ने इस घोर पतितावस्था को हृदय से लगा रखा था;
दिखावे का सन्ताप उन पतितों के पीछे पड़ जाता
और सपनों के नगरों के धूसर उपनगरों में कुचल भर देता।
There Life displayed to the spectator soul
The shadow depths of her strange miracle.
वहां उस द्रष्टा आत्मसत्ता के सम्मुख प्राणशक्ति ने
अपनी विचित्र चमत्कारी धूमिल गहनताओं का प्रदर्शन किया।
A strong and fallen goddess without hope,
Obscured, deformed by some dire Gorgon spell,
As might a harlot empress in a bouge,
Nude, unashamed, exulting she upraised
Her evil face of perilous beauty and charm
And, drawing panic to a shuddering kiss
Twixt the magnificence of her fatal breasts,
Allured to their abyss the spirit’s fall.
यह एक शक्तिशालिनी पतिता देवी आशावान थी
मलिनता से कलुषित, किसी पैशाचिक वशीकरण द्वारा विकृत बन गयी थी,
एक कोठे पर एक वेश्या महारानी सम शक्तिशालिनी,
नग्न, निर्लज्ज, हर्ष से भरी वह फूली न समाती
अपना खतरनाक सुन्दर और मोहक अमंगली मुख ऊपर उठाती
और अपने स्तनों की घातक मोहिनी के मध्य
एक कांपते चुम्बन के द्वारा वह घोर त्रास को आंक देती,
और चेतना को अपने गर्तों में पतन हित लुभाती।
Across the field of sight she multiplied
As on a scenic film or moving plate
The implacable splendour of her nightmare pomps.
द़ृष्टि क्षेत्र के चारोंओर वह बहुगुणी हो वर्धित होती जाती
जैसे कि एक चलचित्र का द़ृश्य हो या चलचित्र पट्टिका घूमती हो
अपने रात्रि के दुःस्वप्नों के आडम्बरों की अतृप्त शोभाओं का प्रदर्शन करती।
On the dark background of a soulless world
She staged between a lurid light and shade
Her dramas of the sorrow of the depths
Written on the agonised nerves of living things:
Epics of horror and grim majesty,
Wry statues spat and stiffened in life’s mud,
A glut of hideous forms and hideous deeds
Paralysed pity in the hardened breast.
In booths of sin and night-repairs of vice
Styled infamies of the body’s concupiscence
And sordid imaginations etched in flesh,
Turned lust into a decorative art:
Abusing Nature’s gift her pervert skill
Immortalised the sown grain of living death,
In a mud goblet poured the bacchic wine,
To a satyr gave the thyrsus of a god.
एक आत्महीन जगत् की उस काली पृष्ठभूमि पर
उसने एक डरावने प्रकाश और छाया के मध्य रंगमंच पर
शोक की गहराइयां दर्शाते अपने नाटकों का प्रदर्शन किया
जिन्हें जीवित पदार्थों की दुखती नाड़ियों पर लिखा गया था:
ये विभिषिका और निर्मम प्रभुता के महाकाव्य थे,
जिनमें विकृत प्रतिमाएं बकबक करतीं और प्राण के कीचड़ में अकड़ जातीं,
विकराल आकृतियों की एक भरमार थी और पातकी घोर कर्म
कठोर अन्तरों में दया को पथरा देते,
पाप के अड्डों और व्यभिचार के रात्रिविलास-कक्षों में
देह की कामुक भोगविलासों की रचित अपकीर्तियां
और अधम कल्पनाएं शरीर की मांसलता पर गोदी जातीं,
काम-लिप्सा को एक सजावटी कला में बदल दिया जाता:
विश्व प्रकृति की भेंट का अपने विकृत शिल्प द्वारा दुरुपयोग कर
जीवित मृत्यु के रोपित बीज को अमर बना दिया,
एक माटी के पात्र में सुरलोक की मदिरा को ढाल दिया,
एक लम्पट विलासी को एक देवता का दण्ड थमा दिया गया।
Impure, sadistic, with grimacing mouths,
Grey foul inventions gruesome and macabre
Came televisioned from the gulfs of Night.
दूषित, क्रूरकामी, जिनकी मुखाकृतियां घृणित कराल थीं
काली, वीभत्स, मलिन, भयानक अशुभ और मिथ्या रचनाएं
काल अंधरात्रि के गर्तों से निकलती दूरदर्शन पर जैसे दिखायी देती।
Her craft ingenious in monstrosity,
Impatient of all natural shape and poise,
A gape of nude exaggerated lines,
Gave caricature a stark reality,[212]
And art-parades of weird distorted forms,
And gargoyle masks obscene and terrible
Trampled to tormented postures the torn sense.
विरूपता की विकरालता में उसका शिल्प विलक्षण था,
सकल स्वाभाविक रूप और मुद्रा से वह असन्तुष्ट थी,
नग्न अतिरंजित रेखाओं को चौडे़फाटन द्वारा,
उसने व्यंग्य-चित्र को जैसे एक कटु यथार्थ बना दिया,
और अनोखी पिशाची विद्रूप आकृतियों की कला का जुलूस निकाला।
और अश्लील तथा भयकारी भद्दे लम्बे लीला-रूपकों ने
खण्डित इन्द्रियबोध की उत्पीड़ित दशा को और कुचल डाला।
An inexorable evil’s worshipper,
She made vileness great and sublimated filth;
A dragon power of reptile energies
And strange epiphanies of grovelling Force
And serpent grandeurs couching in the mire
Drew adoration to a gleam of slime.
एक निर्दय अशुभ प्रदूषणता की एक पुजारिन,
उसने दुष्टता को महान् और घृणित गंदगी को श्रेष्ठ बना दिया;
सर्पिल ऊर्जाओं की एक अजगरी शक्ति ने
और भ्रष्ट हो गिरी महाशक्ति के विचित्र दर्शनों ने

All Nature pulled out of her frame and base
Was twisted into an unnatural pose:
Repulsion stimulated inert desire;
Agony was made a red-spiced food for bliss,
Hatred was trusted with the work of lust
And torture took the form of an embrace;
A ritual anguish consecrated death;
Worship was offered to the Undivine.
सम्पूर्ण प्रकृति को उसके ढांचे और आधार से खींच निकाल
एक अस्वाभाविक मुद्रा में विकृत कर दिया गया था:
विकर्षण ने निष्क्रिय वासना को उत्तेजित कर दिया;
यन्त्रणा आनन्द प्राप्ति हित एक लाल मिर्च का मसालेदार भोजन बन गयी थी,
भोग-लिप्सा के कार्य के लिए घृणा विश्वस्त मानी जाती
और यातना एक आलिंगन का आकार बन गयी;
एक कर्मकाण्डी व्यथा द्वारा मृत्यु को श्रद्धांजलि दी जाती,
घोर-असुर कोपूजा-अर्चना अर्पित होती।
A new aesthesis of Inferno’s art
That trained the mind to love what the soul hates,
Imposed allegiance on the quivering nerves
And forced the unwilling body to vibrate.
रौरव नरक की एक नव संवेदनशीलता ने
मन को उससे प्रेम करने की सीख दी जिससे आत्मा घृणा करती थी,
यह कम्पित नाड़ियों पर स्वामी-भक्ति आरोपित करती
और अनिच्छुक देह को स्पन्दित होने को विवश कर देती।
Too sweet and too harmonious to excite
In this regime that soiled the being’s core,
Beauty was banned, the heart’s feeling dulled to sleep
And cherished in their place sensation’s thrills;
The world was probed for jets of sense-appeal.
सत्ता को अन्तिम मर्मस्थल तक दूषित करते इस साम्राज्य में
सौन्दर्य निष्कासित था, जो अतिमधुर और इतना सुसंगत था
कि उत्तेजित नहीं कर पाता था, हृदय की भावनाएं धूमिल पड़
सो गयी थींऔर उनके स्थान पर इन्द्रियावेश प्रिय लगते थे;
इन्द्रिय-सुख आकर्षणों के लिए सारा जगत् छाना जाता।
Here cold material intellect was the judge
And needed sensual prick and jog and lash
That its hard dryness and dead nerves might feel
Some passion and power and acrid point of life.
यहां पर ठण्डी भावशून्य संसारी बुद्धि न्यायाधीश थी
और जिसे इन्द्रियावेग की चुभन और धक्का और कोड़े की आवश्यकता थी
जिससे उसकी अनम्य शुष्क और संज्ञाहीन नाड़ियों में
कुछ आवेश और बल और जीवन के तीक्ष्ण दंश का अनुभव जाग सके।
A new philosophy theorised evil’s rights,
Gloried in the shimmering rot of decadence,
Or gave to a python force persuasive speech
And armed with knowledge the primeval brute.
एक नये दर्शन ने पाप के अधिकारों के सिद्धान्त की रचना कर डाली,
सड़ते अधोपतन के चमकते अपक्षय की गौरवगाथा बखान की,
या एक तामसिक ऊर्जा को विश्वास जगाती वाचा दे दी
और एक आदि पाशविक नर को जानकारी से सज्जित कर दिया।
Over life and Matter only brooding bowed,
Mind changed to the image of a rampant beast;[213]
It scrambled into the pit to dig for truth
And lighted its search with the subconscient’s flares.
प्राणजीवन और जड़तत्त्व पर केवल चिन्ता छायी रहती,
मानस तो एक प्रचण्ड निरंकुश पशु की छवि में बदल गया था;
जो सत्य को खोदने के लिए उस अन्ध गर्त में संघर्षरत था
और निज खोज को अवचेतन की मशालों से प्रकाशित करता।
Thence bubbling rose sullying the upper air,
The filth and festering secrets of the Abyss:
This it called positive fact and real life.
तब वहां से बुदबुदाहट उठी जिससे ऊपर का वायुमण्डल दूषित हो गया,
उस नारकीय गर्त की यह गंदगी और सड़ते रहस्य थे;
इसी को वह सकारात्मक वास्तविकता और सत्-जीवन कहता था।
This now composed the fetid atmosphere.
इसी ने उस दुर्गन्धपूर्ण वातावरण को रचा था।
A wild-beast passion crept from secret Night
To watch its prey with fascinating eyes:
Around him like a fire with sputtering tongues
There lolled and laughed a bestial ecstasy;
The air was packed with longings brute and fierce;
Crowding and stinging in a monstrous swarm
Pressed with a noxious hum into his mind
Thoughts that could poison Nature’s heavenliest breath,
Forcing reluctant lids assailed the sight
Acts that revealed the mystery of Hell.
गुप्त घोर कालरात्रि से एक हिंस्त्र पशु-आवेश चुपके से रेंगा
निज वशीकरणी नयनों से अपने शिकार पर नजर रखता:
उसके चारोंओर एक पाशविक हर्षोन्माद की लपलपाती जिह्वाएं
एक ज्वाला समान वहां हंसती डोलती फैली हुई थीं;
वायुमण्डल भीषण और आदिम क्रूर लालसाओं से पूर्ण था;
एक पैशाचिक झुंड छत्ते समान टूटता डंक मार रहा था
योगी के मन को एक विषैली गुनगुनाहट से बाध्य कर भर रहा था
उन घोर विचारों से जो प्रकृति देवी की दिव्यतम श्वास को विषैला कर सकते थे,
योगी की अनिच्छुक पलकों को बलात् खोल उस द़ृश्य का सामना करने
उन कर्मों को जो घोर नरक का रहस्य प्रकटाते थे बाध्य कर दिया।
All that was there was on this pattern made.
समस्त जो वहां था इसी विधि से रचा गया था।
A race possessed inhabited those parts.
एक प्रेत बाधा से ग्रस्त जाति उन प्रदेशों में बसती थी।
A force demoniac lurking in man’s depths
That heaves suppressed by the heart’s human law,
Awed by the calm and sovereign eyes of Thought,
Can in a fire and earthquake of the soul
Arise and, calling to its native night,
Overthrow the reason, occupy the life
And stamp its hoof on Nature’s shaking ground:
This was for them their being’s flaming core.
मानव की गहनताओं में एक दानवी शक्ति छिपी है
जो हृदय को मानवीय विधान द्वारा दमित करने पर उमड़ पड़ती है,
यह सत्य-विचार के शान्त और तेजस्वी सौम्य नयनों से भयभीत रहती है,
पर यदि उस जीव को अग्निदाह और भूकम्पघेर लेता है
तो उठ आती है और अपनी आदि अज्ञ अन्धता को पुकार कर,
विवेक का राज्य छीनकर, जीवन पर अधिकार जमा लेती है
और मानव स्वभाव की कम्पित भूमि पर अपने खुर की छाप लगा देती है:
उस जाति की सत्ता का यही दहकता मर्मस्थलीय बीज कोष था।
A mighty energy, a monster god,
Hard to the strong, implacable to the weak,
It stared at the harsh unpitying world it made
With the stony eyelids of its fixed idea.
एक बलशाली ऊर्जा थी, एक दानवी देवता था,
बली के लिए कठोर निर्मम था, निर्जल के लिए अशम्य था
यह अपने द्वारा निर्मित उस निर्मम निर्दय लोक को
अपने अटल स्थिर भाव की पाषाणी पलकों से घूरता रहता था।
Its heart was drunk with a dire hunger’s wine,
In others’ suffering felt a thrilled delight
And of death and ruin the grandiose music heard.
उसका अन्तर एक भीषण अतृप्ति की मदिरा से मदहोश था,
अन्यों की यातना में एक रोमांचित सुख की अनुभूति पाता
और मृत्यु और विनाश का हाहाकार एक भव्य संगीत होता।
To have power, to be master, was sole virtue and good:
It claimed the whole world for Evil’s living room,[214]
Its party’s grim totalitarian reign
The cruel destiny of breathing things.
सत्ता और प्रभुता पा लेना ही एकमात्र गुण और शुभ लाभ था:
यह सम्पूर्ण संसार को महापाप की बैठक बनाने का दावा करता,
इसके दल का क्रूर सर्वसत्ताधारी निरंकुश शासन
श्वासधारी प्राणियों पर निष्ठुर दुर्भाग्य बन छाया रहता।
All on one plan was shaped and standardised
Under a dark dictatorship’s breathless weight.
एक अन्धी तानाशाही के हांफते बोझ तले
सब कुछ एक योजना में रूपायित और मानकीकृत था।
In street and house, in councils and in courts
Beings he met who looked like living men
And climbed in speech upon high wings of thought
But harboured all that is subhuman, vile
And lower than the lowest reptile’s crawl.
गली और भवन में, सभागारों और राज्य दरबारों में
योगी ऐसी सत्ताओंसे मिला जो जीवित मनुष्यों जैसे दिखते थे
और भाषण में वे उच्च विचार के पंखों से उड़ते थे
किन्तु मानवता में जो अधम और हेय होता उस सब को प्रश्रय देते,
और नीचतम रेंगते कीड़े की अपेक्षा नीचतर और धूर्त होते।
The reason meant for nearness to the gods
And uplift to heavenly scale by the touch of mind
Only enhanced by its enlightening ray
Their inborn nature’s wry monstrosity.
बुद्धि-विवेक जो देवताओं के समीप पहुंचने का साधन है
और चित्त के स्पर्श द्वारा स्वर्गिक श्रेणी तक उन्नयन के लिए है,
किन्तु वहां वे अपनी इस प्रबुद्ध ज्योति-किरण द्वारा
अपने जन्मजात स्वभावकीवक्र दानवता को और बढ़ा देते थे।
Often a familiar visage studying
Joyfully encountered at some dangerous turn,
Hoping to recognise a look of light,
His vision warned by the spirit’s inward eye
Discovered suddenly Hell’s trade-mark there,
Or saw with the inner sense that cannot err,
In the semblance of a fair or virile form
The demon and the goblin and the ghoul.
किसी आपात् स्थिति के मोड़ पर हठात् एक उल्लासपूर्ण मुलाकात में
एक परिचित चेहरे को जब योगी पढ़ता,
और प्रकाश की एक द़ृष्टि से पहचानने की आशा करता,
आत्मा की अन्तर्द़ृष्टि द्वारा चेतावनी पाकर उसका अन्तर-दर्शन
हठात् वहां घोर नरक के व्यापार चिह्न को खोज निकाल लेता,
या निश्चयात्मक अन्तर्बोध द्वारा देख लेता,
एक सौम्य या वीर आकृति के पीछे छिपे उस रूप में
उस पिशाच और दैत्य और जिन्न को परख लेता।
An insolence reigned of cold stone-hearted strength
Mighty, obeyed, approved by the Titan’s law,
The huge laughter of a giant cruelty
And fierce glad deeds of ogre violence.
वहां स्नेह-हीन पाषाण-हृदयी,शक्ति सामर्थ्यशालिनी
एक धृष्टता का राज्य था, जिसका अनुशासन दैत्य विधान द्वारा मान्य था,
एक घोर निष्ठुर क्रूरता का घोर अट्टहास था
और भीषण पिशाचीहिंसकता के भयानक प्रसन्न घोर कर्म थे।
In that wide cynic den of thinking beasts
One looked in vain for a trace of pity and love;
There was no touch of sweetness anywhere,
But only Force and its acolytes, greed and hate:
There was no help for suffering, none to save,
None dared resist or speak a noble word.
विचार से युक्त पाशविक मानवों के उस प्रशस्त कटुतापूर्ण अड्डे पर
करुणा और प्रेम की एक बूंद खोजना भी व्यर्थ था;
वहां कहीं पर भी माधुर्य का कोई स्पर्श नहीं था,
केवल महाबल था और उसके अनुचर लालसा और घृणा थे:
दुःखियों का कोई सहायक नहीं था, कोई रक्षक नहीं था
कोई भी प्रतिरोध करने या एक शिष्ट वाणी बोलने का साहस न करता।
Armed with the aegis of tyrannic Power,
Signing the edicts of her dreadful rule
And using blood and torture as a seal,
Darkness proclaimed her slogans to the world.
आततायी आसुरी बल के संरक्षण सेशस्त्रित
घोर रात्रि के अति भयानक शासन की राजाज्ञा पर हस्ताक्षर कर
और रक्त और यातना को एक मुद्रा सम व्यवहार कर,
घोर अन्धता ने अपने नारों की संसार में घोषणा कर दी।
A servile blinkered silence hushed the mind[215]
Or only it repeated lessons taught,
While mitred, holding the good shepherd’s staff,
Falsehood enthroned on awed and prostrate hearts
The cults and creeds that organise living death
And slay the soul on the altar of a lie.
एक चाटुकारी आंखों के अन्धे मौन ने मन को चुप करा दिया
या यह केवल पढ़े पढ़ाये पाठों को दोहराता रहता था,
जब कि शीश पर मुकुट और कर में भले चरवाहे का धर्म-दण्ड धारण कर
मिथ्यादेवी भयग्रस्त और नमित हृदयों पर शासन करती
उन मतों और वर्गों पर जो जीवित-मृत्यु के संस्थापक थे
और एक मिथ्या की वेदी पर आत्मा का हनन कर देती।
All were deceived or served their own deceit;
Truth in that stifling atmosphere could not live.
सभी जन छले जाते या अपने निजी कपट द्वारा सेवारत रहते;
उस श्वासरुद्धपरिवेश में परम सत्य जीवित नहीं रह सका।
There wretchedness believed in its own joy
And fear and weakness hugged their abject depths;
All that is low and sordid-thoughted, base,
All that is drab and poor and miserable,
Breathed in a laxed content its natural air
And felt no yearning of divine release:
Arrogant, gibing at more luminous states
The people of the gulfs despised the sun.
वहां अभागा दुःख अपने निजी सुख में विश्वास रखता
और भय एवं निर्बलता अपनी अधम नीचताओं से चिपके रहते;
वह सब जो पतित और स्वार्थी विचारों का, घृणित है,
वह समस्त जो नीरस और दरिद्र और सन्तप्त दुःखी है
वह एक श्लथ सन्तोष के अपने स्वाभाविक वातावरण में जीता
और दिव्य मुक्ति हित कोई लालसा अनुभव न करता:
अहंकारी घमण्डी, उच्चतर प्रकाशमय अवस्थाओं का उपहास करते
इन खाड़ियों के वासी जन सत्य-सूर्य से घृणा करते।
A barriered autarchy excluded light;
Fixed in its will to be its own grey self,
It vaunted its norm unique and splendid type:
It soothed its hunger with a plunderer’s dream;
Flaunting its cross of servitude like a crown,
It clung to its dismal harsh autonomy.
एक परिधि में बन्द अहंतन्त्र था जहां प्रकाश वर्जित था;
अपने धूसर व्यक्तित्व में बने रहने को यह निज संकल्प में अटल रहता
यह अपने मानक की अद्वितीयता और शोभा की शान बघारता:
यह अपनी क्षुधा की तृप्ति एक लूटमार के स्वप्न से करता;
यह अपने दासत्व के क्रूर का एक राजमुकुट सम प्रदर्शन करता,
यह अपने कलुषित क्रूर स्वायत्त शासन से चिपका रहता।
A bull-throat bellowed with its brazen tongue;
Its hard and shameless clamour filling space
And threatening all who dared to listen to truth
Claimed the monopoly of the battered ear;
A deafened acquiescence gave its vote,
And braggart dogmas shouted in the night
Kept for the fallen soul once deemed a god
The pride of its abysmal absolute.
एक वृषभ-कण्ठ से गरजता और कर्कश भाषा में दहाड़ता;
इसका कठोर निर्लज्ज कोलाहल चहुं दिशाओं को भर देता
और जो सत्य जानने का साहस करते उन्हें धमकाता
इस प्रकार आहत श्रोत्रों पर वह निज एकाधिकार मानता;
एक बहरे मौन स्वीकार ने अपना मत इसको दिया था,
और रात्रि में दम्भी सिद्धान्तों की चिल्लाहटों ने
इस पतित जीव हित जो कभी एक देव समझा जाता था
अपने काले अगाध गर्त की गर्वीली एकाधिपत्यता कायम रखी थी।
A lone discoverer in these menacing realms
Guarded like termite cities from the sun,
Oppressed mid crowd and tramp and noise and flare,
Passing from dusk to deeper dangerous dusk,
He wrestled with powers that snatched from mind its light
And smote from him their clinging influences.[216]
इन आतंकभरे प्रदेशों में वह एक अकेला खोजी था,
ये राज्य सूर्य प्रकाश सेवल्मीक-नगरों सम सुरक्षित थे,
वहां भीड़ में व्याकुल और भागदौड़ का शोर औ’ तड़क-भड़क में
वह एक उदास वायुमण्डल से और खतरनाक धूमिल यात्राओं से गुजरते हुए,
उन शक्तियों से संघर्ष में लगा था जिन्होंने मन से उसका प्रकाश छीन लिया था
उसने अपने से चिपटे उनके प्रभावों को नोच डाला।
Soon he emerged in a dim wall-less space.
शीघ्र ही वह एक भित्तिहीन धुंधली दिशा में पहुंच गया।
For now the peopled tracts were left behind;
He walked between wide banks of failing eve.
क्योंकि अब जनपथ पीछे छूट गये थे;
वह क्षीण होती सन्ध्या के दो विस्तृत तटों के मध्य चल रहा था।
Around him grew a gaunt spiritual blank,
A threatening waste, a sinister loneliness
That left mind bare to an unseen assault,
An empty page on which all that willed could write
Stark monstrous messages without control.
उसके चहुं ओर एक वीभत्स आत्मिक शून्यता विकसित होने लगी,
एक धमकी भरा उजाड़, एक अशुभ अकेलापन था
जिसने मन को एक अलक्ष्य आक्रमण हित खुला छोड़ दिया था,
एक कोरा पृष्ठ जिस पर सब कोई जो चाहे लिख सकता था
नग्न भीषण सन्देशों को निर्बाध लिखा जा सकता था।
A travelling dot on downward roads of Dusk
Mid barren fields and barns and straggling huts
And a few crooked and phantasmal trees,
He faced a sense of death and conscious Void.
धुंधली काल संध्या के नीचे जाते मार्गों पर एक बिन्दु समान यात्री ने
ऊसर मैदानों और खलिहानों एवं छितरे झोंपड़ी के बीच से
और कुछ कंकाली प्रेतोंसम दिखते वृक्षों के मध्य से निकल
उसने मृत्यु के एक बोध और सचेत महाशून्य का सामना किया।
But still a hostile Life unseen was there
Whose deathlike poise resisting light and truth
Made living a bleak gap in nullity.
किन्तु फिर भी एक विद्वेषी प्राणशक्ति वहां अगोचर विद्यमान थी
जिसके ज्योति और सत्य के विरोधी मृत्यु सम आसन ने
जीवन को नगण्यता का एक वीरान अन्तराल बना दिया।
He heard the grisly voices that deny;
Assailed by thoughts that swarmed like spectral hordes,
A prey to the staring phantoms of the gloom
And terror approaching with its lethal mouth,
Driven by a strange will down ever down,
The sky above a communique of Doom,
He strove to shield his spirit from despair,
But felt the horror of the growing Night
And the Abyss rising to claim his soul.
उसने निषेध करती उन वीभत्स वाणियों को सुना;
प्रेतों के झुण्डों सम उस पर टूटते विचारों से आक्रमित बना,
वह एक शिकार था जिसकीओर विषादी अन्धकार के प्रेत घूरते
और अपना घातक मुख फाड़े आतंक समान बढ़ रहे थे,
वह एक विचित्र संकल्प से संचालित सतत नीचे उतरता जा रहा था,
ऊपर नभ घोर सर्वनाश की एक घोषणा बना हुआ था,
योगी अपने आत्मतत्त्व को निराशा से सुरक्षित रखने हित प्रयासरत था,
किन्तु फैलती घोर रात्रि कीभीषणता अनुभव कर रहा था
और उसकी आत्मा को अधिकृत करने उठते उस महागर्त के आतंक का।
Then ceased the abodes of creatures and their forms
And solitude wrapped him in its voiceless folds.
तब उन प्राणियों के आवास और उनके सकल आकार समाप्त हो गये
और एकाकीपन ने अपनी निःशब्द पर्तों में उसे लपेट लिया।
All vanished suddenly like a thought expunged;
His spirit became an empty listening gulf
Void of the dead illusion of a world:
Nothing was left, not even an evil face;
He was alone with the grey python Night.
समस्त एक बहिष्कृत विचार सम हठात् विलुप्त हो गया;
उसकी आत्म-सत्ता एक रीती श्रवण करती खोखली खाड़ी बन गयी
इस एक जगत् के मानों मृत छलावे से रीती हो गयी:
कुछ भी शेष नहीं रहा, एक भी अशुभ पापी मुख दिखायी नहीं दिया।
उस श्यामल अजगरी महा-अन्धकार के साथ केवल वह अकेला था।
A dense and nameless Nothing conscious, mute,
Which seemed alive but without body or mind,
Lusted all being to annihilate
That it might be for ever nude and sole.
यह एक घना और अनामी असत् जो सचेत और मूक था,
जो जीवित लगता किन्तु देह या मनविहीन था,
यह सम्पूर्ण अस्तित्व को मिटा देने को लालायित था
जिससे यह सदैव नग्न और अकेला बना रह सके।
As in a shapeless beast’s intangible jaws,[217]
Gripped, strangled by that lusting viscous blot,
Attracted to some black and giant mouth
And swallowing throat and a huge belly of doom,
His being from its own vision disappeared
Drawn towards depths that hungered for its fall.
एक आकारहीन पशु के सूक्ष्म जबड़ों में जैसे जकड़ी गयी
उसकी सत्ता, उस कामुक वीभत्स कलंक द्वारा दमित हो,
किसी काले और दैत्याकार मुख द्वारा खींच ली गयी
और कण्ठ द्वारा निगलकर एक विशाल सर्वनाशी उदर में समा गयी,
अब उसका अस्तित्व स्वयं अपनी आत्मद़ृष्टि से लोप हो गया
और गर्तों में खिंच गया जो इसके पतन हित क्षुधातुर थीं।
A formless void suppressed his struggling brain,
A darkness grim and cold oppressed his flesh,
A whispered grey suggestion chilled his heart;
Haled by a serpent-force from its warm home
And dragged to extinction in blank vacancy
Life clung to its seat with cords of gasping breath;
Lapped was his body by a tenebrous tongue.
एक अमूर्त रिक्तता ने उसके संघर्षरत मस्तिष्क को कुचल डाला,
एक कराल और उष्णताहीन ठंडी कालिमा ने उसकी काया को संज्ञाहीन बना,
एक फुसफुसाते कलुषित सुझाव ने उसके हृदय को हिमवत् बना दिया;
एक सर्पिल ऊर्जा द्वारा वह अपने उष्ण गेह से खींच निकाला गया
और निरानन्दी शून्यता में विनाश की ओर घसीटा जाता
प्राण-जीवन अवरुद्ध होते श्वास की डोर से अपने स्थान से चिपका रहा;
उसकी काया को एक अशुभ लपलपाती जिह्वा ने लपेट लिया था।
Existence smothered travailed to survive;
Hope strangled perished in his empty soul,
Belief and memory abolished died
And all that helps the spirit in its course.
रूद्ध अस्तित्व जीवित रहने को कठिन प्रयास में जुट गया;
उसकी रिक्त आत्मसत्ता में आशा दम घुट कर मर गयी,
विश्वास और स्मृति भी विनष्ट हो मिट गयी
और आत्मा के पथ का सहारा जो सम्बल था वह भी समाप्त हो गया।
There crawled through every tense and aching nerve
Leaving behind its poignant quaking trail
A nameless and unutterable fear.
वहां अब योगीकी प्रत्येक तनी हुई और दुःखती नाड़ी में रेंग रहा था
एक अवर्णनीय और अनामी आतंक
जो अपने पीछे घातक तीव्र कम्पित पदचिह्नो को छोड़ रहा था।
As a sea nears a victim bound and still,
The approach alarmed his mind for ever dumb
Of an implacable eternity
Of pain inhuman and intolerable.
ज्यों बन्दी स्थिर पडे़ एक शिकार के समीप एक शोक-सागर गहराये,
वैसे ही एक अप्रशम्य अनन्तता द्वारा थोपी गयी
अमानवीय और असहनीय पीड़ा के दुःख के आगमन से
उसका सदा के लिए मूक बना मन व्याकुल हो उठा।
This he must bear, his hope of heaven estranged;
He must ever exist without extinction’s peace
In a slow suffering Time and tortured Space,
An anguished nothingness his endless state.
अपनी स्वर्गिक आशा से विमुख होने पर, यह उसे सहना ही होगा;
निर्वाण की शान्ति के बिना उसे सतत जीना होगा
काल में एक धीमी गति से दुःख भोगना और यातनापूर्ण दिशा में रहना,
एक व्याकुल निस्सारता ही उसकी अन्तहीन अवस्था थी।
A lifeless vacancy was now his breast,
And in the place where once was luminous thought,
Only remained like a pale motionless ghost
An incapacity for faith and hope
And the dread conviction of a vanquished soul
Immortal still but with its godhead lost,
Self lost and God and touch of happier worlds.
एक निर्जीव रीतेपन का अब उसकी छाती में डेरा था,
और उस स्थान में जहां पहले कभी द्युतिमान् विचार का वास था,
वहां एक निस्तेज निश्चेष्ट प्रेत समान एक श्रद्धा
और आशा हित एक असमर्थता मात्र शेष थी
और एक पराजित जीव की त्रासदायक द़ृढ़ प्रतीति थी
कि अपना दिव्यांश खोकर भी यह अभी भी अमर था,
यद्यपि आत्मचेतना और ईश्वर और प्रसादमय जगतों का स्पर्श खो चुका था।
But he endured, stilled the vain terror, bore
The smothering coils of agony and affright;[218]
Then peace returned and the soul’s sovereign gaze.
किन्तु अश्वपति सब सहता रहा, मिथ्या भय को शान्त कर,
यातना के जलते कसते कुण्डलों के घोर त्रास को सहता गया;
तत्पश्चात् शान्ति और आत्म-सत्ता की परम द़ृष्टि लौट आयी।
To the blank horror a calm Light replied:
Immutable, undying and unborn,
Mighty and mute the Godhead in him woke
And faced the pain and danger of the world.
उस शून्य विभीषिका को एक शान्त परा-ज्योति ने उत्तर दिया:
अविकारी, अमर और अजन्मा,
शक्तिशाली और मूक देवत्व उसमें जाग्रत् हो उठा
और उसने लोक की पीडा़ और संकट का सामना किया।
He mastered the tides of Nature with a look:
He met with his bare spirit naked Hell.[219]
एक चितवन से प्राण प्रकृति के ज्वारों पर प्रभुत्व पा:
उसने अपनी अनावृत आत्मा के साथ नग्न घोर नरक का सामना किया।
