At the Feet of The Mother

Satyavan Acknowledges Love and Proposes to Savitri, pp. 408-409

Opening Remarks
The coming of Savitri is seen by Satyavan as the gold link between Spirit and Matter that he has been seeking for so long. He intuitively feels that her coming is the coming of Grace in his life.

Gold sun
But now the gold link comes to me with thy feet
And His gold sun has shone on me from thy face.

He feels that Savitri is the gold link that would join the spiritual and material life and make them one. Her footsteps join the sun and the earth.

Fierier march of moments
For now another realm draws near with thee
And now diviner voices fill my ear,
A strange new world swims to me in thy gaze
Approaching like a star from unknown heavens;
A cry of spheres comes with thee and a song
Of flaming gods. I draw a wealthier breath
And in a fierier march of moments move.

Satyavan is experiencing a happy change within him as if the divine were speaking to him and a strange new world is swimming before his eyes. It seems to him as if stars from unknown heavens were drawing near bringing with them the song of higher worlds of flaming gods. He feels a new life stirring him as if the march of moments were filled with a richer and fierier breath.

Mind transfigures
My mind transfigures to a rapturous seer.

He feels his mind is being transfigured into the mind of a rapturous seer.

All with her coming fills
A foam-leap travelling from the waves of bliss
Has changed my heart and changed the earth around:
All with thy coming fills. Air, soil and stream
Wear bridal raiment to be fit for thee
And sunlight grows a shadow of thy hue
Because of change within me by thy look.

It is as if the foam from seas of bliss has leapt from the waves and changed his heart and changed everything around him. All is filled with her coming. Air, soil, stream wear a bridal raiment fit for her and sunlight grows a shadow of her because of the change within him brought about by her look.

Come nearer
Come nearer to me from thy car of light
On this green sward disdaining not our soil.

He bids Savitri to come nearer stepping down from her chariot lest the soil and grass feel disdained.

Secret spaces made for thee
For here are secret spaces made for thee
Whose caves of emerald long to screen thy form.

He feels that here, in this forest there are secret spaces that are as if just meant for her. The emerald caves would long to screen her form.

Wilt thou
Wilt thou not make this mortal bliss thy sphere?

He asks her if she would not like to make this earthly happiness her world.

Descend, O happiness
Descend, O happiness, with thy moon-gold feet
Enrich earth’s floors upon whose sleep we lie.

He prays if the embodied happiness that she is, to descend with her moon-gold feet and enrich the floors of earth.

Enter my life
O my bright beauty’s princess Savitri,
By my delight and thy own joy compelled
Enter my life, thy chamber and thy shrine.

He prays that his beauty’s princess Savitri, enters his life and make it her chamber and shrine moved by her own joy and Satyavan’s delight.

In the great quietness
In the great quietness where spirits meet,
Led by my hushed desire into my woods
Let the dim rustling arches over thee lean;
One with the breath of things eternal live,
Thy heart-beats near to mine, till there shall leap
Enchanted from the fragrance of the flowers
A moment which all murmurs shall recall
And every bird remember in its cry.”

In the great quietness of the woods where great spirits meet led by hushed desire, he prays for the dim arches of trees to lean over her and making all a single breath of the eternal. Then with their heartbeats together, there shall leap a moment that all the murmurs of the forest shall recall and every bird remember it is her songs.

Closing Remarks
Thus we see Satyavan proposes to Savitri acknowledging the birth of love within his heart.
