At the Feet of The Mother

Gratitude (13/18) Unpathed, Unwalled

The old adamantine vetoes stood no more:
Overpowered were earth and Nature’s obsolete rule;
The python coils of the restricting Law
Could not restrain the swift arisen God:
Abolished were the scripts of destiny.
There was no small death-hunted creature more,
No fragile form of being to preserve
From an all-swallowing Immensity.
The great hammer-beats of a pent-up world-heart
Burst open the narrow dams that keep us safe
Against the forces of the universe.
The soul and cosmos faced as equal powers.
A boundless being in a measureless Time
Invaded Nature with the infinite;
He saw unpathed, unwalled, his titan scope….

Sunbelts of knowledge, moonbelts of delight
Stretched out in an ecstasy of widenesses
Beyond our indigent corporeal range.
There he could enter, there awhile abide.
A voyager upon uncharted routes
Fronting the viewless danger of the Unknown,
Adventuring across enormous realms,
He broke into another Space and Time. [Savitri: 82-83, 91]

The Mother had brought down the Overmind creation upon earth with the Divine at the centre in the persona of Sri Aurobindo and the gods manifesting in the disciples. It could have been another Sri Krishna lila albeit under the new circumstances of the world. It would have established a great religion, the greatest of all that would have spread across and drew humanity from near and far with dazzling splendour of the gods sowing seeds of a higher godlike humanity. Such a religion may have continued for a few millennium. Yet it would eventually have a term as indeed all religions have had so far. The Overmind gods cannot establish the kingdom of God upon earth forever. They can, at best create the kingdom within for a few select human beings to live in but they cannot bridge the gulf between Heaven and earth nor transform our earth to make it equal to heaven. In fact while the gods at the summits of the Overmind and even the gods on the higher plane are not subject to ignorance yet is their action limited and they are not fully immune to the spell of Maya that creates the sense of separation from the One. It is only when one goes beyond even the Overmind that one steps out of the Avidyamayi Maya and breathes the Vidyamayi Maya of the Divine. The reason creation fell is precisely because as the gods stepped into the world of forms and names and acquired distinctness, each thought of himself as the Supreme. Thus came the powerful spell of the separative Maya that was yet required to create individualities before each such distinct individual recovers its oneness while still in the form and keeping its distinctness. It means a supreme act of surrender to the Supreme which only the human beings endowed with the psychic being can do. Therefore it is only man who can, invoking a Truth and Force that comes from beyond the Overmind, beyond even the gods of the Overmind who can become the bridge between Spirit and Matter. The ancient yogis knew about the realms beyond the gods but they knew that if one enters there all forms dissolve. So they used it as the golden gate for the final departure. Yet if this Force from beyond the frontiers of form can be brought down into earthly matter and this terrestrial substance could be transformed by it then a New Creation that would not be ever subject to any dissolution or fall, pralaya or retrogression, can be manifested upon earth. The gods knew it not. Nor the sages and saints. The Vedic seers saw this remote possibility but also it’s near impossibility.

Yet Sri Aurobindo and the Mother took up the near impossible taking the sliver of a golden chance. They knew that the moment was near. They knew that they have the mandate and the wisdom and strength to make it happen. They had been experiencing the descent of the Higher Divine Consciousness in their very body cells.

And yet there was an if. If only man would consent to the transformation since it was for him that the enormous task was being undertaken.

Will he won’t he? This was the question.

‘Yes’ said Sri Aurobindo and that was enough. The work of the New Creation entered a new phase. Until now they were doing it individually. Now they had come together as One. The period of the Arya was over. The New Conception had been cast as a seed in the human mind. Now the work had to be done in the field of human life. The conception had to change into something living and real. The New Creation needed to be given flesh and blood by the power of the Idea-Force. Thus began the gradual but steady inflow of sections of a representative humanity that were drawn to the new conception and ready to prepare themselves for the new creation.

When I ask you to be plastic in relation to the Divine, I mean not to resist the Divine with the rigidity of preconceived ideas and fixed principles.
