Opening Remarks
The King’s retinue arrives along with Savitri, the golden bride, once a princess, to the home of Satyavan.
Left far behind
Left far behind were now the faces known,
The happy silken babble on laughter’s lips
And the close-clinging clasp of intimate hands
And adoration’s light in cherished eyes
Offered to the one sovereign of their life.
The happy faces of friends and the cherished ones, her playmates and intimate confidante as well as those who looked upon her with admiration and adoration offered towards their princess were left far behind.
Nature’s primaeval loneliness
Nature’s primaeval loneliness was here:
Here only was the voice of bird and beast,—
The ascetic’s exile in the dim-souled huge
Inhuman forest far from cheerful sound
Of man’s blithe converse and his crowded days.
Nature’s early loneliness was felt here where one could only hear the voice of bird and beast. It was a forest where human beings had hardly come except few ascetics exiled from worldly life. The cheerful crowded life of man was far behind.
Home of emerald dusk
In a broad eve with one red eye of cloud,
Through a narrow opening, a green flowered cleft,
Out of the stare of sky and soil they came
Into a mighty home of emerald dusk.
Towards the evening, Savitri came through a narrow opening rounded by greenery and flowers. Watched by the sky and the soil the bridal party came into the forest home as dusk began to fall upon the forest.
A rude refuge
There onward led by a faint brooding path
Which toiled through the shadow of enormous trunks
And under arches misers of sunshine,
They saw low thatched roofs of a hermitage
Huddled beneath a patch of azure hue
In a sunlit clearing that seemed the outbreak
Of a glad smile in the forest’s monstrous heart,
A rude refuge of the thought and will of man
Watched by the crowding giants of the wood.
Into the forest they were led by a faint path through the shadow of trees where sunshine could hardly pass. There they saw low thatched roofs of hermitage built close to each other beneath the sky where there was a clearing of the trees as if a glad smile of the sun entered the heart of the monstrous forest. It seemed a rude place for human thought and will to take refuge amidst the huge trees.
Closing Remarks
Thus they arrived to the future home of Savitri to leave her with Satyavan and his parents.
