Savitri’s Love, pp. 613-614

Opening Remarks
Savitri gives a hint of the love that she feels for Satyavan.

Love and lover and beloved
One who came love and lover and beloved
Eternal, built himself a wondrous field
And wove the measures of a marvellous dance.

Savitri reveals that the origin of Love is in the Eternal. It is He who is the force of love that labours in the depths of creation. He is the lover as well as the beloved and the power of love that joins the two. It is Love that weaves our lives together for the dance of delight in this wonderous field of creation.

The circle of love
There in its circles and its magic turns
Attracted he arrives, repelled he flees.

Love pulsates through creation joining and recombining lives through attraction and repulsion which are both means used by Love for its magical game.

Broken music of the soul
In the wild devious promptings of his mind
He tastes the honey of tears and puts off joy
Repenting, and has laughter and has wrath,
And both are a broken music of the soul
Which seeks out reconciled its heavenly rhyme.

Love arrives as the Saviour in this magic turns and circles and fields of creation. It is the force that binds the different elements of creation and is opposed by the force of disintegration that also operates in creation. Prompted by the mind in a wild devious state love tastes the sweetness of tears and puts off joy in repentance. It has laughter and wrath and both of these are a broken music of the soul whence the purest notes of the song of love are found and all its discordant notes reconciled in its heavenly rhyme.

Ever he comes
Ever he comes to us across the years
Bearing a new sweet face that is the old.

Love comes to us across the years bearing a new sweet face yet with old hopes and dreams.

His bliss laughs
His bliss laughs to us or it calls concealed
Like a far-heard unseen entrancing flute
From moonlit branches in the throbbing woods,
Tempting our angry search and passionate pain.

The bliss of love laughs or calls to us hidden like a far-heard unseen entrancing flute from moonlit branches in the throbbing woods tempting us to search with passionate pain.

Disguised the Lover
Disguised the Lover seeks and draws our souls.

The Divine is the Source of Love who seeks and draws our souls through love.

Named Satyavan
He named himself for me, grew Satyavan.

It is the Divine as Love whom Savitri has felt in the name and persona of Satyavan.

Twin souls
For we were man and woman from the first,
The twin souls born from one undying fire.

Savitri reveals the secret truth of man and woman who come together as spiritual mates. They are twin souls born from one undying fire.

Other stars
Did he not dawn on me in other stars?

She affirms through a question that is it not that she has striven along with Satyavan in different forms and names.

Pursued me
How has he through the thickets of the world
Pursued me like a lion in the night
And come upon me suddenly in the ways
And seized me with his glorious golden leap!

Savitri is conscious that it is not the first time that Savitri and Satyavan have met. He has pursued her through the mazes and fences of the world pursuing her like a lion suddenly coming up in the ways of the world and seizing upon what belongs to him.

He yearned
Unsatisfied he yearned for me through time,
Sometimes with wrath and sometimes with sweet peace
Desiring me since first the world began.

Through many a lives Satyavan has yearned for her, sometimes with wrath and sometimes with sweet peace. They have been destined to be together desiring each other, drawn to each other since the world began.

Like a wild wave
He rose like a wild wave out of the floods
And dragged me helpless into seas of bliss.

He rose like a wild wave out of the floods of life and dragged her helplessly into seas of bliss. It is after many lives of togetherness and all the shades of life that the two souls are ready to bear the cup of love nectar wine.

Curtained past
Out of my curtained past his arms arrive;
They have touched me like the soft persuading wind,
They have plucked me like a glad and trembling flower,
And clasped me happily burned in ruthless flame.

They have met each other through the curtains of the past lives. Their embrace and touch is still felt in her life as a soft persuading wind. His arms have plucked her like a glad and trembling flower and clasped her in a burning flame of happy passionate love.

I too have found him
I too have found him charmed in lovely forms
And run delighted to his distant voice
And pressed to him past many dreadful bars.

She too has felt and known him as the same person in different charming and lovely forms. She has run delighted to her distant voice and pressed closer to him despite many a dreadful bars to stop.

Face of Satyavan
If there is a yet happier greater god,
Let him first wear the face of Satyavan
And let his soul be one with him I love;
So let him seek me that I may desire.

Savitri is steadfast in her love for Satyavan. She refuses to change her mind and will even if a god comes to woo her heart. She forcefully says that even if a happier god comes to me let him first assume the face and soul of Satyavan and then seek her so that she may desire him. She indicates that she loves Satyavan completely, both his soul and thereby his body as well.

Only one heart
For only one heart beats within my breast
And one god sits there throned. Advance, O Death,
Beyond the phantom beauty of this world;
For of its citizens I am not one.

She affirms the power of her love saying that there is only one heart and Satyavan sits there on the throne of love. She bids Death to advance further beyond the phantom beauty of this twilight world of the heavenly ideal saying clearly that she does not belong to the world of heavenly ideal but something still deeper and greater.

God the Fire
I cherish God the Fire, not God the Dream.”

Finally she affirms boldly that she cherishes God the Fire who realises and builds the future rather than God who is a dream.

Closing Remarks
Savitri reveals the depth and intensity of their love declaring itself through many lives.
