Opening Remarks
Savitri goes past this stream of Life.
Mane of Darkness
All this streamed past her and seemed to her vision’s sight
As if around a high and voiceless isle
A clamour of waters from far unknown hills
Swallowed its narrow banks in crowding waves
And made a hungry world of white wild foam:
Hastening, a dragon with a million feet,
Its foam and cry a drunken giant’s din,
Tossing a mane of Darkness into God’s sky,
It ebbed receding into a distant roar.
All the energies and forces and beings of these worlds streamed past Savitri. It seemed like a clamour waters from far off hills crowded upon its narrow banks as if to swallow it. It built worlds of hunger with its foam. It seemed a dragon hastening with million feet, its foam and cry were like drunken giant’s din tossing a mane of Darkness into God’s sky. It ebbed receding into a distant roar.
Joy of life
Then smiled again a large and tranquil air:
Blue heaven, green earth, partners of Beauty’s reign,
Lived as of old, companions in happiness;
And in the world’s heart laughed the joy of life.
Then a large and tranquil state smiled again. Blue skies and green earth, partners of Beauty lived happily together as companions in happiness and the joy of life was felt laughing in the world’s heart.
All now was still
All now was still, the soil shone dry and pure.
The soul returned to its state of purity and stillness.
She moved not plunged not
Through it all she moved not, plunged not in the vain waves.
Savitri moved through it all without plunging into its waves.
Life’s clamour fled
Out of the vastness of the silent self
Life’s clamour fled; her spirit was mute and free.
Life’s clamour fled away from the vastness of the silent self and her spirit was mute and free.
Closing Remarks
Savitri leaves the realm of life and its misleading dreams.
