Iṣa Ātreya

Sukta 8

5.8.1

त्वाम॑ग्न ऋता॒यवः॒ समी॑धिरे प्र॒त्नं प्र॒त्नास॑ ऊ॒तये॑ सहस्कृत ।

पु॒रु॒श्चं॒द्रं य॑ज॒तं वि॒श्वधा॑यसं॒ दमू॑नसं गृ॒हप॑तिं॒ वरे॑ण्यं ॥

tvā́m agne ṛta-yávaḥ sám īdhire pratnám pratnā́saḥ ūtáye sahaḥ-kṛta ǀ

puru-candrám yajatám viśvá-dhāyasam dámūnasam gṛhá-patim váreṇyam ǁ

O Fire, created by our force, thee the Ancient One, the ancient seekers of Truth set blazing for their guard the master of sacrifice with his many delights who establishes all, Fire who dwells in the house, master of the house, the supremely desirable.

5.8.2

त्वाम॑ग्ने॒ अति॑थिं पू॒र्व्यं विशः॑ शो॒चिष्के॑शं गृ॒हप॑तिं॒ नि षे॑दिरे ।

बृ॒हत्के॑तुं पुरु॒रूपं॑ धन॒स्पृतं॑ सु॒शर्मा॑णं॒ स्वव॑सं जर॒द्विषं॑ ॥

tvā́m agne átithim pūrvyám víśaḥ śocíḥ-keśam gṛhá-patim ní sedire ǀ

bṛhát-ketum puru-rū́pam dhana-spṛ́tam su-śármāṇam su-ávasam jarat-víṣam ǁ

Thee, O Fire, men seated within as the ancient guest, the master of the house with his tresses of light, — vast is his intuition, many are his forms, he brings out the riches, he is a giver of perfect peace and protection and a destroyer of the foe.

5.8.3

त्वाम॑ग्ने॒ मानु॑षीरीळते॒ विशो॑ होत्रा॒विदं॒ विवि॑चिं रत्न॒धात॑मं ।

गुहा॒ संतं॑ सुभग वि॒श्वद॑र्शतं तुविष्व॒णसं॑ सु॒यजं॑ घृत॒श्रियं॑ ॥

tvā́m agne mā́nuṣīḥ īḷate víśaḥ hotrā-vídam vívicim ratna-dhā́tamam ǀ

gúhā sántam su-bhaga viśvá-darśatam tuvi-svanásam su-yájam ghṛta-śríyam ǁ

Thee the human people pray, O Fire, who knowest the word of invocation, who hast the just discernment, who art strongest to found the ecstasy, — thee who dwellest in the secret cave, O happy Flame, and hast the vision of all things, the perfect sacrificer with the multitude of thy voices and the glory and beauty of thy light.

5.8.4

त्वाम॑ग्ने धर्ण॒सिं वि॒श्वधा॑ व॒यं गी॒र्भिर्गृ॒णंतो॒ नम॒सोप॑ सेदिम ।

स नो॑ जुषस्व समिधा॒नो अं॑गिरो दे॒वो मर्त॑स्य य॒शसा॑ सुदी॒तिभिः॑ ॥

tvā́m agne dharṇasím viśvádhā vayám gīḥ-bhíḥ gṛṇántaḥ námasā úpa sedima ǀ

sáḥ naḥ juṣasva sam-idhānáḥ aṅgiraḥ deváḥ mártasya yaśásā sudītí-bhiḥ ǁ

Thee, O Fire, who upholdest all things in every way we voicing thee with our words have approached with obeisance; so do thou accept us, O Angiras, a godhead kindled by the glory of a mortal and by his high illuminings.

5.8.5

त्वम॑ग्ने पुरु॒रूपो॑ वि॒शेवि॑शे॒ वयो॑ दधासि प्र॒त्नथा॑ पुरुष्टुत ।

पु॒रूण्यन्ना॒ सह॑सा॒ वि रा॑जसि॒ त्विषिः॒ सा ते॑ तित्विषा॒णस्य॒ नाधृषे॑ ॥

tvám agne puru-rū́paḥ viśé-viśe váyaḥ dadhāsi pratná-thā puru-stuta ǀ

purū́ṇi ánnā sáhasā ví rājasi tvíṣiḥ sā́ te titviṣāṇásya ná ā-dhṛ́ṣe ǁ

O Fire, thou takest many forms for man and man and thou foundest for him his growth as of old, O thou lauded by many voices; many are the things on which thou feedest and thou illuminest them all with thy force, and none can do violence to the fury of thy blaze when thou blazest up in thy might.

5.8.6

त्वाम॑ग्ने समिधा॒नं य॑विष्ठ्य दे॒वा दू॒तं च॑क्रिरे हव्य॒वाह॑नं ।

उ॒रु॒ज्रय॑सं घृ॒तयो॑नि॒माहु॑तं त्वे॒षं चक्षु॑र्दधिरे चोद॒यन्म॑ति ॥

tvā́m agne sam-idhānám yaviṣṭhya devā́ḥ dūtám cakrire havya-vā́hanam ǀ

uru-jráyasam ghṛtá-yonim ā́-hutam tveṣám cákṣuḥ dadhire codayát-mati ǁ

Thee, O youthful Fire, in thy high kindling the gods have made a messenger and a carrier of the offerings; thee of whom light is the native seat and wide are the spaces through which thou movest, they have set when thou hast received the offerings as a keen burning eye that urges the thought.

5.8.7

त्वाम॑ग्ने प्र॒दिव॒ आहु॑तं घृ॒तैः सु॑म्ना॒यवः॑ सुष॒मिधा॒ समी॑धिरे ।

स वा॑वृधा॒न ओष॑धीभिरुक्षि॒तो॒३่ऽभि ज्रयां॑सि॒ पार्थि॑वा॒ वि ति॑ष्ठसे ॥

tvā́m agne pra-dívaḥ ā́-hutam ghṛtáiḥ sumna-yávaḥ su-samídhā sám īdhire ǀ

sáḥ vavṛdhānáḥ óṣadhībhiḥ ukṣitáḥ abhí jráyāṃsi pā́rthivā ví tiṣṭhase ǁ

Thee, O Fire, fed with offerings of light from the higher heaven the seekers of bliss1 kindled with an entire kindling, so now growing on the herbs to thy full might thou spreadest over wide earth-spaces.
