Sukta 20
10.20.1
भ॒द्रं नो॒ अपि॑ वातय॒ मनः॑ ॥
bhadrám naḥ ápi vātaya mánaḥ ǁ
Bring to us a happy mind.
10.20.2
अ॒ग्निमी॑ळे भु॒जां यवि॑ष्ठं शा॒सा मि॒त्रं दु॒र्धरी॑तुं ।
यस्य॒ धर्म॒न्त्स्व१่रेनीः॑ सप॒र्यंति॑ मा॒तुरूधः॑ ॥
agním īḷe bhujā́m yáviṣṭham śāsā́ mitrám duḥ-dhárītum ǀ
yásya dhárman sváḥ énīḥ saparyánti mātúḥ ū́dhaḥ ǁ
I pray the Fire, the friend who is irresistible in his own command, in whose law the white rays attend on the Sun-world, serve the teat of the mother.
10.20.3
यमा॒सा कृ॒पनी॑ळं भा॒साके॑तुं व॒र्धयं॑ति ।
भ्राज॑ते॒ श्रेणि॑दन् ॥
yám āsā́ kṛpá-nīḷam bhāsā́-ketum vardháyanti ǀ
bhrā́jate śréṇi-dan ǁ
Fire whom face to face a home of light, one who brings the ray of intuition by his lustre they increase; he blazes with his row of flaming tusks.
10.20.4
अ॒र्यो वि॒शां गा॒तुरे॑ति॒ प्र यदान॑ड्दि॒वो अंता॑न् ।
क॒विर॒भ्रं दीद्या॑नः ॥
aryáḥ viśā́m gātúḥ eti prá yát ā́naṭ diváḥ ántān ǀ
kavíḥ abhrám dī́dyānaḥ ǁ
He comes to us as a noble path for men when he travels to the ends of heaven; he is the seer and he lights up the sky1.
10.20.5
जु॒षद्ध॒व्या मानु॑षस्यो॒र्ध्वस्त॑स्था॒वृभ्वा॑ य॒ज्ञे ।
मि॒न्वन्त्सद्म॑ पु॒र ए॑ति ॥
juṣát havyā́ mā́nuṣasya ūrdhváḥ tasthau ṛ́bhvā yajñé ǀ
minván sádma puráḥ eti ǁ
Accepting the oblation of man he stands high exalted in the sacrifice, a skilful craftsman; he goes in our front building our home.
10.20.6
स हि क्षेमो॑ ह॒विर्य॒ज्ञः श्रु॒ष्टीद॑स्य गा॒तुरे॑ति ।
अ॒ग्निं दे॒वा वाशी॑मंतं ॥
sáḥ hí kṣémaḥ havíḥ yajñáḥ śruṣṭī́ ít asya gātúḥ eti ǀ
agním devā́ḥ vā́śī-mantam ǁ
He is our secure foundation, he is our offering, he is the sacrifice; his path goes swiftly to its goal: the gods call Fire with its adze.
10.20.7
य॒ज्ञा॒साहं॒ दुव॑ इषे॒ऽग्निं पूर्व॑स्य॒ शेव॑स्य ।
अद्रेः॑ सू॒नुमा॒युमा॑हुः ॥
yajña-sáham dúvaḥ iṣe agním pū́rvasya śévasya ǀ
ádreḥ sūnúm āyúm āhuḥ ǁ
I desire from the Fire, powerful for the sacrifice the work of the supreme bliss2; they speak of him as the living son of the stone3.
10.20.8
नरो॒ ये के चा॒स्मदा विश्वेत्ते वा॒म आ स्युः॑ ।
अ॒ग्निं ह॒विषा॒ वर्धं॑तः ॥
náraḥ yé ké ca asmát ā́ víśvā ít té vāmé ā́ syuríti␣syuḥ ǀ
agním havíṣā várdhantaḥ ǁ
Whatever men are with us may they in all ways abide in happiness making the Fire to grow by the offerings.
10.20.9
कृ॒ष्णः श्वे॒तो॑ऽरु॒षो यामो॑ अस्य ब्र॒ध्न ऋ॒ज्र उ॒त शोणो॒ यश॑स्वान् ।
हिर॑ण्यरूपं॒ जनि॑ता जजान ॥
kṛṣṇáḥ śvetáḥ aruṣáḥ yā́maḥ asya bradhnáḥ ṛjráḥ utá śóṇaḥ yáśasvān ǀ
híraṇya-rūpam jánitā jajāna ǁ
Black is his movement and white and luminous and crimson-red, it is large and straight and glorious; golden of form the father brought into being.
10.20.10
ए॒वा ते॑ अग्ने विम॒दो म॑नी॒षामूर्जो॑ नपाद॒मृते॑भिः स॒जोषाः॑ ।
गिर॒ आ व॑क्षत्सुम॒तीरि॑या॒न इष॒मूर्जं॑ सुक्षि॒तिं विश्व॒माभाः॑ ॥
evá te agne vi-madáḥ manīṣā́m ū́rjaḥ napāt amṛ́tebhiḥ sa-jóṣāḥ ǀ
gíraḥ ā́ vakṣat su-matī́ḥ iyānáḥ íṣam ū́rjam su-kṣitím víśvam ā́ abhārítyabhāḥ ǁ
So, O Fire, rapturous thou bearest thy thinking mind, O son of energy, companioning the immortals, coming to us thou bearest thy words and thy right thinkings, thou bringest impelling force, energy, happy worlds of habitation, all4.
