Sukta 39
8.39.1
अ॒ग्निम॑स्तोष्यृ॒ग्मिय॑म॒ग्निमी॒ळा य॒जध्यै॑ ।
अ॒ग्निर्दे॒वाँ अ॑नक्तु न उ॒भे हि वि॒दथे॑ क॒विरं॒तश्चर॑ति दू॒त्यं१่ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
agním astoṣi ṛgmíyam agním īḷā́ yajádhyai ǀ
agníḥ devā́n anaktu naḥ ubhé␣íti hí vidáthe␣íti kavíḥ antáríti cárati dūtyám nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
To Fire I give laud, the possessor of the illumined word, to worship the Fire with the speech of revelation; let the Fire reveal the gods to us, for he is the seer who goes on his embassy between the two worlds in the knowledge, — let all that are hostile be rent asunder.
8.39.2
न्य॑ग्ने॒ नव्य॑सा॒ वच॑स्त॒नूषु॒ शंस॑मेषां ।
न्यरा॑ती॒ ररा॑व्णां॒ विश्वा॑ अ॒र्यो अरा॑तीरि॒तो यु॑च्छंत्वा॒मुरो॒ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
ní agne návyasā vácaḥ tanū́ṣu śáṃsam eṣām ǀ
ní árātīḥ rárāvṇām víśvāḥ aryáḥ árātīḥ itáḥ yucchantu ā-múraḥ nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
O Fire, destroy with a new word the expression of these within in the bodies, destroy within us the beings hostile to those who give thee, let all the enemy forces, the hostile spirits depart from here who would do hurt to us, — let all that are hostile be rent asunder.
8.39.3
अग्ने॒ मन्मा॑नि॒ तुभ्यं॒ कं घृ॒तं न जु॑ह्व आ॒सनि॑ ।
स दे॒वेषु॒ प्र चि॑किद्धि॒ त्वं ह्यसि॑ पू॒र्व्यः शि॒वो दू॒तो वि॒वस्व॑तो॒ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
ágne mánmāni túbhyam kám ghṛtám ná juhve āsáni ǀ
sáḥ devéṣu prá cikiddhi tvám hí ási pūrvyáḥ śiváḥ dūtáḥ vivásvataḥ nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
O Fire, to thee I offer my thoughts as if an offering of light1 cast into thy mouth; so do thou awake to knowledge in the gods, for thou art the ancient and benign messenger of the Sun, — let all that are alien be rent asunder.
8.39.4
तत्त॑द॒ग्निर्वयो॑ दधे॒ यथा॑यथा कृप॒ण्यति॑ ।
ऊ॒र्जाहु॑ति॒र्वसू॑नां॒ शं च॒ योश्च॒ मयो॑ दधे॒ विश्व॑स्यै दे॒वहू॑त्यै॒ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
tát-tat agníḥ váyaḥ dadhe yáthā-yathā kṛpaṇyáti ǀ
ūrjā́-āhutiḥ vásūnām śám ca yóḥ ca máyaḥ dadhe víśvasyai devá-hūtyai nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
He founds growth upon growth of the being even as one2 desires; offered the oblation of offered energy for every call to the gods he founds both the peace and the movement of the Shining Ones, he founds the bliss, — let all that are alien be rent asunder.
8.39.5
स चि॑केत॒ सही॑यसा॒ग्निश्चि॒त्रेण॒ कर्म॑णा ।
स होता॒ शश्व॑तीनां॒ दक्षि॑णाभिर॒भीवृ॑त इ॒नोति॑ च प्रती॒व्यं१่ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
sáḥ ciketa sáhīyasā agníḥ citréṇa kármaṇā ǀ
sáḥ hótā śáśvatīnām dákṣiṇābhiḥ abhí-vṛtaḥ inóti ca pratīvyám nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
He awakes to knowledge by his forceful and many-sided works; he is the Priest of the call of many powers surrounded by lights of discernment and he takes possession of all that faces him, — let all that are alien be rent asunder.
8.39.6
अ॒ग्निर्जा॒ता दे॒वाना॑म॒ग्निर्वे॑द॒ मर्ता॑नामपी॒च्यं॑ ।
अ॒ग्निः स द्र॑विणो॒दा अ॒ग्निर्द्वारा॒ व्यू॑र्णुते॒ स्वा॑हुतो॒ नवी॑यसा॒ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
agníḥ jātā́ devā́nām agníḥ veda mártānām apīcyám ǀ
agníḥ sáḥ draviṇaḥ-dā́ḥ agníḥ dvā́rā ví ūrṇute sú-āhutaḥ návīyasā nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
The Fire knows the births of the gods and the secret thing of mortals; this is the Fire that gives the treasures, the Fire when there is cast into him as offering that is new uncovers the hidden doors, — let all that are alien be rent asunder.
8.39.7
अ॒ग्निर्दे॒वेषु॒ संव॑सुः॒ स वि॒क्षु य॒ज्ञिया॒स्वा ।
स मु॒दा काव्या॑ पु॒रु विश्वं॒ भूमे॑व पुष्यति दे॒वो दे॒वेषु॑ य॒ज्ञियो॒ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
agníḥ devéṣu sám-vasuḥ sáḥ vikṣú yajñíyāsu ā́ ǀ
sáḥ mudā́ kā́vyā purú víśvam bhū́ma-iva puṣyati deváḥ devéṣu yajñíyaḥ nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
Fire is the companion dwelling in the gods, dwelling in the beings who are masters of sacrifice; he increases by his rapture many seer-wisdoms, even as all that is large, he is a god in the gods and a lord of sacrifice, — let all that are alien be rent asunder.
8.39.8
यो अ॒ग्निः स॒प्तमा॑नुषः श्रि॒तो विश्वे॑षु॒ सिंधु॑षु ।
तमाग॑न्म त्रिप॒स्त्यं मं॑धा॒तुर्द॑स्यु॒हंत॑मम॒ग्निं य॒ज्ञेषु॑ पू॒र्व्यं नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
yáḥ agníḥ saptá-mānuṣaḥ śritáḥ víśveṣu síndhuṣu ǀ
tám ā́ aganma tri-pastyám mandhātúḥ dasyuhán-tamam agním yajñéṣu pūrvyám nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
Fire is the sevenfold human, he is lodged in all the rivers; to him we have come, the dweller in the triple abode, the Fire of the thinker, slayer of the Destroyers, ancient and supreme in the sacrifices, — let all that are alien be rent asunder.
8.39.9
अ॒ग्निस्त्रीणि॑ त्रि॒धातू॒न्या क्षे॑ति वि॒दथा॑ क॒विः ।
स त्रीँरे॑काद॒शाँ इ॒ह यक्ष॑च्च पि॒प्रय॑च्च नो॒ विप्रो॑ दू॒तः परि॑ष्कृतो॒ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
agníḥ trī́ṇi tri-dhā́tūni ā́ kṣeti vidáthā kavíḥ ǀ
sáḥ trī́n ekādaśā́n ihá yákṣat ca pipráyat ca naḥ vípraḥ dūtáḥ pári-kṛtaḥ nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
Fire is the seer who takes up his dwelling in his three abodes of knowledge of three kinds; may he sacrifice to the Three and Thirty and satisfy us, perfected, the illumined thinker and messenger, — let all that are alien be rent asunder.
8.39.10
त्वं नो॑ अग्न आ॒युषु॒ त्वं दे॒वेषु॑ पूर्व्य॒ वस्व॒ एक॑ इरज्यसि ।
त्वामापः॑ परि॒स्रुतः॒ परि॑ यंति॒ स्वसे॑तवो॒ नभं॑तामन्य॒के स॑मे ॥
tvám naḥ agne āyúṣu tvám devéṣu pūrvya vásvaḥ ékaḥ irajyasi ǀ
tvā́m ā́paḥ pari-srútaḥ pári yanti svá-setavaḥ nábhantām anyaké same ǁ
O ancient and supreme Fire, thou art in us who are mortals, thou in the gods, one and sole thou rulest over the Treasures; around thee the wide-flowing waters go each with its own bridge, — let all that are alien be rent asunder.
