Sukta 18

3.18.1

भवा॑ नो अग्ने सु॒मना॒ उपे॑तौ॒ सखे॑व॒ सख्ये॑ पि॒तरे॑व सा॒धुः ।

पु॒रु॒द्रुहो॒ हि क्षि॒तयो॒ जना॑नां॒ प्रति॑ प्रती॒चीर्द॑हता॒दरा॑तीः ॥

bháva naḥ agne su-mánāḥ úpa-itau sákhā-iva sákhye pitárā-iva sādhúḥ ǀ

puru-drúhaḥ hí kṣitáyaḥ jánānām práti pratīcī́ḥ dahatāt árātīḥ ǁ

O Fire, in our coming to thee become right-minded accomplishing our aim as a friend to a friend, as father and mother to their child; for these worlds of beings born are full of harm: burn to ashes the hostile forces that come against us.

3.18.2

तपो॒ ष्व॑ग्ने॒ अंत॑राँ अ॒मित्राँ॒ तपा॒ शंस॒मर॑रुषः॒ पर॑स्य ।

तपो॑ वसो चिकिता॒नो अ॒चित्ता॒न्वि ते॑ तिष्ठंताम॒जरा॑ अ॒यासः॑ ॥

tápo␣íti sú agne ántarān amítrān tápa śáṃsam áraruṣaḥ párasya ǀ

tápo␣íti vaso␣íti cikitānáḥ acíttān ví te tiṣṭhantām ajárāḥ ayā́saḥ ǁ

Wholly consume our inner foes, consume the self-expression of the enemy who would war against us, O lord of the riches, consume, conscious in knowledge, the powers of ignorance; let them range wide thy ageless marching fires.

3.18.3

इ॒ध्मेना॑ग्न इ॒च्छमा॑नो घृ॒तेन॑ जु॒होमि॑ ह॒व्यं तर॑से॒ बला॑य ।

याव॒दीशे॒ ब्रह्म॑णा॒ वंद॑मान इ॒मां धियं॑ शत॒सेया॑य दे॒वीं ॥

idhména agne icchámānaḥ ghṛténa juhómi havyám tárase bálāya ǀ

yā́vat ī́śe bráhmaṇā vándamānaḥ imā́m dhíyam śata-séyāya devī́m ǁ

I desire and offer the oblation, O Fire, with the fuel, with the pouring of the clarity, for speed, for strength. Until I have the mastery¹, adoring with the Word I lift to thee for the conquest of the hundreds this thought divine.

3.18.4

उच्छो॒चिषा॑ सहसस्पुत्र स्तु॒तो बृ॒हद्वयः॑ शशमा॒नेषु॑ धेहि ।

रे॒वद॑ग्ने वि॒श्वामि॑त्रेषु॒ शं योर्म॑र्मृ॒ज्मा ते॑ त॒न्वं१่भूरि॒ कृत्वः॑ ॥

út śocíṣā sahasaḥ putra stutáḥ bṛhát váyaḥ śaśamānéṣu dhehi ǀ

revát agne viśvā́mitreṣu śám yóḥ marmṛjmá te tanvám bhū́ri kṛ́tvaḥ ǁ

Affirmed by our lauds rise up with thy flame of light, O son of force, found the vast expansion in us who labour at the work, found opulently in the Vishwamitras the peace and the movement, O Fire. We make bright many times over thy body.

3.18.5

कृ॒धि रत्नं॑ सुसनित॒र्धना॑नां॒ स घेद॑ग्ने भवसि॒ यत्समि॑द्धः ।

स्तो॒तुर्दु॑रो॒णे सु॒भग॑स्य रे॒वत्सृ॒प्रा क॒रस्ना॑ दधिषे॒ वपूं॑षि ॥

kṛdhí rátnam su-sanitaḥ dhánānām sáḥ gha ít agne bhavasi yát sám-iddhaḥ ǀ

stotúḥ duroṇé su-bhágasya revát sṛprā́ karásnā dadhiṣe vápūṃṣi ǁ

O conqueror of the riches, create for us the ecstasy, such thou becomest when thou art high kindled. Opulently in the gated house of thy felicitous adorer thou upholdest thy gliding bodies streaming their radiance.
