Hymns to the Mystic Fire

Gāthina Viśvāmitra

Sukta 10

3.10.1

tvā́m agne manīṣíṇaḥ sam-rā́jam carṣaṇīnā́m ǀ

devám mártāsaḥ indhate sám adhvaré ǁ

Thee, O Fire, men who have the thinking mind kindle in the sacrifice, an emperor over those who see, mortals set alight a godhead.

3.10.2

tvā́m yajñéṣu ṛtvíjam ágne hótāram īḷate ǀ

gopā́ḥ ṛtásya dīdihi své dáme ǁ

Thee, O Fire, they pray in the sacrifices as the sacrificant of the rite, the Priest of the call; shine out the guardian of the Truth in thy own home.

3.10.3

sáḥ gha yáḥ te dádāśati sam-ídhā jātá-vedase ǀ

sáḥ agne dhatte su-vī́ryam sáḥ puṣyati ǁ

He who gives to thee with the fuel, to the knower of the births, holds the hero-energy, he ever grows.

3.10.4

sáḥ ketúḥ adhvarā́ṇām agníḥ devébhiḥ ā́ gamat ǀ

añjānáḥ saptá hótṛ-bhiḥ havíṣmate ǁ

He is the ray of intuition in the sacrifices; may he, the Fire, come with the gods, anointed by the seven priests of oblation, to him who holds the offerings.

3.10.5

prá hótre pūrvyám vácaḥ agnáye bharata bṛhát ǀ

vipā́m jyótīṃṣi bíbhrate ná vedháse ǁ

Bring forward for the Fire, for the Priest of the call, the vast and supreme word1 as for the creator and me who bring the lights of illuminations.

3.10.6

agním vardhantu naḥ gíraḥ yátaḥ jā́yate ukthyáḥ ǀ

mahé vā́jāya dráviṇāya darśatáḥ ǁ

May our words make the Fire to grow when he is born, the Fire that carries the utterance, visioned for the great plenitude, for the treasure.

3.10.7

ágne yájiṣṭhaḥ adhvaré devā́n deva-yaté yaja ǀ

hótā mandráḥ ví rājasi áti srídhaḥ ǁ

O Fire, most strong to sacrifice in the pilgrim-rite, worship the gods for the seeker of the godhead; as the rapturous Priest of the call thou shinest wide, beyond the forces that make us err.

3.10.8

sáḥ naḥ pāvaka dīdihi dyu-mát asmé␣íti su-vī́ryam ǀ

bháva stotṛ́-bhyaḥ ántamaḥ svastáye ǁ

So, do thou, O purifying Flame, kindle in us the luminous hero-energy, to those who laud thee become most close for their weal.

3.10.9

tám tvā víprāḥ vipanyávaḥ jāgṛ-vā́ṃsaḥ sám indhate ǀ

havya-vā́ham ámartyam sahaḥ-vṛ́dham ǁ

This is thou whom the illumined seers who have the light, ever wakeful, kindle, the immortal bearer of the offering, increaser of our force.
