Triśiras Tvāṣṭra

Sukta 8

10.8.1

प्र के॒तुना॑ बृह॒ता या॑त्य॒ग्निरा रोद॑सी वृष॒भो रो॑रवीति ।

दि॒वश्चि॒दंताँ॑ उप॒माँ उदा॑नळ॒पामु॒पस्थे॑ महि॒षो व॑वर्ध ॥

prá ketúnā bṛhatā́ yāti agníḥ ā́ ródasī␣íti vṛṣabháḥ roravīti ǀ

diváḥ cit ántān upa-mā́n út ānaṭ apā́m upá-sthe mahiṣáḥ vavardha ǁ

The Fire journeys on with his vast ray of intuition, the Bull bellows to earth and heaven; he has reached up to the highest extremities of heaven, the mighty one has grown in the lap of the waters.

10.8.2

मु॒मोद॒ गर्भो॑ वृष॒भः क॒कुद्मा॑नस्रे॒मा व॒त्सः शिमी॑वाँ अरावीत् ।

स दे॒वता॒त्युद्य॑तानि कृ॒ण्वन्त्स्वेषु॒ क्षये॑षु प्रथ॒मो जि॑गाति ॥

mumóda gárbhaḥ vṛṣabháḥ kakút-mān asremā́ vatsáḥ śímī-vān arāvīt ǀ

sáḥ devá-tāti út-yatāni kṛṇván svéṣu kṣáyeṣu prathamáḥ jigāti ǁ

The Bull of the heights1, the new-born rejoiced, the unfailing child worker rejoiced and shouted aloud; in the formation of the gods he does his exalted works and comes the first in his own abodes.

10.8.3

आ यो मू॒र्धानं॑ पि॒त्रोरर॑ब्ध॒ न्य॑ध्व॒रे द॑धिरे॒ सूरो॒ अर्णः॑ ।

अस्य॒ पत्म॒न्नरु॑षी॒रश्व॑बुध्ना ऋ॒तस्य॒ योनौ॑ त॒न्वो॑ जुषंत ॥

ā́ yáḥ mūrdhā́nam pitróḥ árabdha ní adhvaré dadhire sū́raḥ árṇaḥ ǀ

ásya pátman áruṣīḥ áśva-budhnāḥ ṛtásya yónau tanváḥ juṣanta ǁ

He who grasps the head of the father and mother they set within in the pilgrim-sacrifice, a sea from the Sun-world; in his path are the shining rays that are the foundations of the Horse of Power and they accept embodiment in the native seat of the Truth.

10.8.4

उ॒षौ॑षो॒ हि व॑सो॒ अग्र॒मेषि॒ त्वं य॒मयो॑रभवो वि॒भावा॑ ।

ऋ॒ताय॑ स॒प्त द॑धिषे प॒दानि॑ ज॒नय॑न्मि॒त्रं त॒न्वे॒३่ स्वायै॑ ॥

uṣáḥ-uṣaḥ hí vaso␣íti ágram éṣi tvám yamáyoḥ abhavaḥ vibhā́-vā ǀ

ṛtā́ya saptá dadhiṣe padā́ni janáyan mitrám tanvé svā́yai ǁ

O shining One, thou comest to the front of dawn after dawn, thou hast become luminous in the Twins; thou holdest the seven planes for the Truth bringing Mitra to birth for thy own body.

10.8.5

भुव॒श्चक्षु॑र्म॒ह ऋ॒तस्य॑ गो॒पा भुवो॒ वरु॑णो॒ यदृ॒ताय॒ वेषि॑ ।

भुवो॑ अ॒पां नपा॑ज्जातवेदो॒ भुवो॑ दू॒तो यस्य॑ ह॒व्यं जुजो॑षः ॥

bhúvaḥ cákṣuḥ maháḥ ṛtásya gopā́ḥ bhúvaḥ váruṇaḥ yát ṛtā́ya véṣi ǀ

bhúvaḥ apā́m nápāt jāta-vedaḥ bhúvaḥ dūtáḥ yásya havyám jújoṣaḥ ǁ

Thou becomest the eye of the vast Truth; when thou journeyest to the Truth thou becomest Varuna, its guardian; thou becomest the child of the waters, O knower of all things born, thou becomest the messenger of the man in whose offering thou hast taken pleasure.

10.8.6

भुवो॑ य॒ज्ञस्य॒ रज॑सश्च ने॒ता यत्रा॑ नि॒युद्भिः॒ सच॑से शि॒वाभिः॑ ।

दि॒वि मू॒र्धानं॑ दधिषे स्व॒र्षां जि॒ह्वाम॑ग्ने चकृषे हव्य॒वाहं॑ ॥

bhúvaḥ yajñásya rájasaḥ ca netā́ yátra niyút-bhiḥ sácase śivā́bhiḥ ǀ

diví mūrdhā́nam dadhiṣe svaḥ-sā́m jihvā́m agne cakṛṣe havya-vā́ham ǁ

Thou art the leader of the sacrifice and leader to the mid-world to which thou resortest constantly with thy helpful team of mares; thou upholdest in heaven thy head that conquers the Sun-world, thy tongue thou makest, O Fire, the carrier of our offerings.

10.8.7

अ॒स्य त्रि॒तः क्रतु॑ना व॒व्रे अं॒तरि॒च्छंधी॒तिं पि॒तुरेवैः॒ पर॑स्य ।

स॒च॒स्यमा॑नः पि॒त्रोरु॒पस्थे॑ जा॒मि ब्रु॑वा॒ण आयु॑धानि वेति ॥

asyá tritáḥ krátunā vavré antáḥ icchán dhītím pitúḥ évaiḥ párasya ǀ

sacasyámānaḥ pitróḥ upá-sthe jāmí bruvāṇáḥ ā́yudhāni veti ǁ

By his will Trita in the secret cave desiring by his movements the thinking of the supreme Father cherished in the lap of the Father and Mother, speaking the companion-word, seeks his weapons.

10.8.8

स पित्र्या॒ण्यायु॑धानि वि॒द्वानिंद्रे॑षित आ॒प्त्यो अ॒भ्य॑युध्यत् ।

त्रि॒शी॒र्षाणं॑ स॒प्तर॑श्मिं जघ॒न्वांत्वा॒ष्ट्रस्य॑ चि॒न्निः स॑सृजे त्रि॒तो गाः ॥

sáḥ pítryāṇi ā́yudhāni vidvā́n índra-iṣitaḥ āptyáḥ abhí ayudhyat ǀ

tri-śīrṣā́ṇam saptá-raśmim jaghanvā́n tvāṣṭrásya cit níḥ sasṛje tritáḥ gā́ḥ ǁ

Trita Aptya discovered the weapons of the Father and missioned by Indra went to the battle; he smote the Three-headed, the seven-rayed and let loose the ray-cows of the son of Twashtri the form-maker.

10.8.9

भूरीदिंद्र॑ उ॒दिन॑क्षंत॒मोजोऽवा॑भिन॒त्सत्प॑ति॒र्मन्य॑मानं ।

त्वा॒ष्ट्रस्य॑ चिद्वि॒श्वरू॑पस्य॒ गोना॑माचक्रा॒णस्त्रीणि॑ शी॒र्षा परा॑ वर्क् ॥

bhū́ri ít índraḥ ut-ínakṣantam ójaḥ áva abhinat sát-patiḥ mányamānam ǀ

tvāṣṭrásya cit viśvá-rūpasya gónām ā-cakrāṇáḥ trī́ṇi śīrṣā́ párā vargíti␣várk ǁ

Indra, the master of beings, broke that great upstriving meditating force and cast it downward and making his own the ray-cows of Twashtri’s son of the universal forms he took away from him his three heads.
