Sukta 5
5.5.1
सुस॑मिद्धाय शो॒चिषे॑ घृ॒तं ती॒व्रं जु॑होतन ।
अ॒ग्नये॑ जा॒तवे॑दसे ॥
sú-samiddhāya śocíṣe ghṛtám tīvrám juhotana ǀ
agnáye jātá-vedase ǁ
On the high-kindled flame pour as offering a poignant clarity, to Fire, the knower of all things born.
5.5.2
नरा॒शंसः॑ सुषूदती॒मं य॒ज्ञमदा॑भ्यः ।
क॒विर्हि मधु॑हस्त्यः ॥
nárāśáṃsaḥ susūdati imám yajñám ádābhyaḥ ǀ
kavíḥ hí mádhu-hastyaḥ ǁ
The spokesman of the godhead, the inviolable hastens the sacrifice on its way, for this is the seer who comes with the wine of sweetness in his hands.
5.5.3
ई॒ळि॒तो अ॑ग्न॒ आ व॒हेंद्रं॑ चि॒त्रमि॒ह प्रि॒यं ।
सु॒खै रथे॑भिरू॒तये॑ ॥
īḷitáḥ agne ā́ vaha índram citrám ihá priyám ǀ
su-kháiḥ ráthebhiḥ ūtáye ǁ
O Fire, we have sought thee with our adoration, bring hither Indra the rich in light, the beloved with his happy chariots to protect us.
5.5.4
ऊर्ण॑म्रदा॒ वि प्र॑थस्वा॒भ्य१่र्का अ॑नूषत ।
भवा॑ नः शुभ्र सा॒तये॑ ॥
ū́rṇa-mradāḥ ví prathasva abhí arkā́ḥ anūṣata ǀ
bháva naḥ śubhra sātáye ǁ
Spread wide, O seat, soft as wool the songs of illuminations sound high; O bright one, be with us for the conquest.
5.5.5
देवी॑र्द्वारो॒ वि श्र॑यध्वं सुप्राय॒णा न॑ ऊ॒तये॑ ।
प्रप्र॑ य॒ज्ञं पृ॑णीतन ॥
dévīḥ dvāraḥ ví śrayadhvam supra-ayanā́ḥ naḥ ūtáye ǀ
prá-pra yajñám pṛṇītana ǁ
Swing wide, O divine doors; be easy of approach that you may be our guard: lead further further and fill full our sacrifice.
5.5.6
सु॒प्रती॑के वयो॒वृधा॑ य॒ह्वी ऋ॒तस्य॑ मा॒तरा॑ ।
दो॒षामु॒षास॑मीमहे ॥
suprátīke␣íti␣su-prátīke vayaḥ-vṛ́dhā yahvī́␣íti ṛtásya mātárā ǀ
doṣā́m uṣásam īmahe ǁ
Dawn and night we seek with desire the two mighty Mothers of the Truth with their fair front to us who increase our being’s space.
5.5.7
वात॑स्य॒ पत्म॑न्नीळि॒ता दैव्या॒ होता॑रा॒ मनु॑षः ।
इ॒मं नो॑ य॒ज्ञमा ग॑तं ॥
vā́tasya pátman īḷitā́ dáivyā hótārā mánuṣaḥ ǀ
imám naḥ yajñám ā́ gatam ǁ
O worshipped twain, O divine priests of man’s call, arrive on the path of the wind to this our sacrifice.
5.5.8
इळा॒ सर॑स्वती म॒ही ति॒स्रो दे॒वीर्म॑यो॒भुवः॑ ।
ब॒र्हिः सी॑दंत्व॒स्रिधः॑ ॥
íḷā sárasvatī mahī́ tisráḥ devī́ḥ mayaḥ-bhúvaḥ ǀ
barhíḥ sīdantu asrídhaḥ ǁ
May Ila, Saraswati, and Mahi1, the three goddesses who create the bliss sit on the sacred seat, they who never err.
5.5.9
शि॒वस्त्व॑ष्टरि॒हा ग॑हि वि॒भुः पोष॑ उ॒त त्मना॑ ।
य॒ज्ञेय॑ज्ञे न॒ उद॑व ॥
śiváḥ tvaṣṭaḥ ihá ā́ gahi vi-bhúḥ póṣe utá tmánā ǀ
yajñé-yajñe naḥ út ava ǁ
O maker of forms, hither benignant arrive all-pervading in thy fostering to us and in thyself; in sacrifice on sacrifice us upward guard.
5.5.10
यत्र॒ वेत्थ॑ वनस्पते दे॒वानां॒ गुह्या॒ नामा॑नि ।
तत्र॑ ह॒व्यानि॑ गामय ॥
yátra véttha vanaspate devā́nām gúhyā nā́māni ǀ
tátra havyā́ni gamaya ǁ
O Tree2, there where thou knowest the secret names of the gods make rich our offerings.
5.5.11
स्वाहा॒ग्नये॒ वरु॑णाय॒ स्वाहेंद्रा॑य म॒रुद्भ्यः॑ ।
स्वाहा॑ दे॒वेभ्यो॑ ह॒विः ॥
svā́hā agnáye váruṇāya svā́hā índrāya marút-bhyaḥ ǀ
svā́hā devébhyaḥ havíḥ ǁ
Swaha to the Fire and to Varuna, Swaha to Indra and the Life-powers, Swaha to the gods be our offering.
