5.2.1
कु॒मा॒रं मा॒ता यु॑व॒तिः समु॑ब्धं॒ गुहा॑ बिभर्ति॒ न द॑दाति पि॒त्रे ।
अनी॑कमस्य॒ न मि॒नज्जना॑सः पु॒रः प॑श्यंति॒ निहि॑तमर॒तौ ॥
kumārám mātā́ yuvatíḥ sám-ubdham gúhā bibharti ná dadāti pitré ǀ
ánīkam asya ná minát jánāsaḥ puráḥ paśyanti ní-hitam aratáu ǁ
The young Mother carries the boy suppressed in the secret cavern and she gives him not to the father; his force is undiminished, men see him in front established inwardly in the movement.
5.2.2
कमे॒तं त्वं यु॑वते कुमा॒रं पेषी॑ बिभर्षि॒ महि॑षी जजान ।
पू॒र्वीर्हि गर्भः॑ श॒रदो॑ व॒वर्धाप॑श्यं जा॒तं यदसू॑त मा॒ता ॥
kám etám tvám yuvate kumārám péṣī bibharṣi máhiṣī jajāna ǀ
pūrvī́ḥ hí gárbhaḥ śarádaḥ vavárdha ápaśyam jātám yát ásūta mātā́ ǁ
Who is this boy, O young mother, whom thou carriest in thyself when thou art compressed into form, but when thou art vast thou hast given him birth? Through many years grew the child in the womb, I saw him born when the mother brought him forth.
5.2.3
हिर॑ण्यदंतं॒ शुचि॑वर्णमा॒रात्क्षेत्रा॑दपश्य॒मायु॑धा॒ मिमा॑नं ।
द॒दा॒नो अ॑स्मा अ॒मृतं॑ वि॒पृक्व॒त्किं माम॑निं॒द्राः कृ॑णवन्ननु॒क्थाः ॥
híraṇya-dantam śúci-varṇam ārā́t kṣétrāt apaśyam ā́yudhā mímānam ǀ
dadānáḥ asmai amṛ́tam vipṛ́kvat kím mā́m anindrā́ḥ kṛṇavan anukthā́ḥ ǁ
I saw him in a distant field, one golden-tusked and pure-bright of hue shaping his weapons: to him I am giving immortality in my several parts and what shall they do to me who possess not Indra and have not the word?
5.2.4
क्षेत्रा॑दपश्यं सनु॒तश्चरं॑तं सु॒मद्यू॒थं न पु॒रु शोभ॑मानं ।
न ता अ॑गृभ्र॒न्नज॑निष्ट॒ हि षः पलि॑क्नी॒रिद्यु॑व॒तयो॑ भवंति ॥
kṣétrāt apaśyam sanutáríti cárantam su-mát yūthám ná purú śóbhamānam ǀ
ná tā́ḥ agṛbhran ájaniṣṭa hí sáḥ páliknīḥ ít yuvatáyaḥ bhavanti ǁ
In that field I saw ranging apart what seemed a happy herd in its many forms of beauty; none could seize on them, for he was born, even those of them who were grey with age became young again.
5.2.5
के मे॑ मर्य॒कं वि य॑वंत॒ गोभि॒र्न येषां॑ गो॒पा अर॑णश्चि॒दास॑ ।
य ईं॑ जगृ॒भुरव॒ ते सृ॑जं॒त्वाजा॑ति प॒श्व उप॑ नश्चिकि॒त्वान् ॥
ké me maryakám ví yavanta góbhiḥ ná yéṣām gopā́ḥ áraṇaḥ cit ā́sa ǀ
yé īm jagṛbhúḥ áva té sṛjantú ā́ ajāti paśváḥ úpa naḥ cikitvā́n ǁ
Who were they that divorced my strength from the herds of light? Against them there was no protector nor any fighter in this war. Let those who seized them release them back to me, he has become aware and is driving back to me my herds of vision.
5.2.6
व॒सां राजा॑नं वस॒तिं जना॑ना॒मरा॑तयो॒ नि द॑धु॒र्मर्त्ये॑षु ।
ब्रह्मा॒ण्यत्रे॒रव॒ तं सृ॑जंतु निंदि॒तारो॒ निंद्या॑सो भवंतु ॥
vasā́m rā́jānam vasatím jánānām árātayaḥ ní dadhuḥ mártyeṣu ǀ
bráhmāṇi átreḥ áva tám sṛjantu ninditā́raḥ níndyāsaḥ bhavantu ǁ
The hostile powers have hidden within in mortals the king of those who dwell in creatures in whom all creatures dwell; let the wisdom-words of Atri release him, let the binders themselves become the bound.
5.2.7
शुन॑श्चि॒च्छेपं॒ निदि॑तं स॒हस्रा॒द्यूपा॑दमुंचो॒ अश॑मिष्ट॒ हि षः ।
ए॒वास्मद॑ग्ने॒ वि मु॑मुग्धि॒ पाशा॒न्होत॑श्चिकित्व इ॒ह तू नि॒षद्य॑ ॥
śúnaḥ-śépam cit ní-ditam sahásrāt yū́pāt amuñcaḥ áśamiṣṭa hí sáḥ ǀ
evá asmát agne ví mumugdhi pā́śān hótaríti cikitvaḥ ihá tú ni-sádya ǁ
Shunahshepa too was bound to the thousandfold post of sacrifice, him didst thou release and he attained to calm1; so do thou take thy seat here in us, O conscious knower, O Priest of the call, and loose from us the cords of our bondage.
5.2.8
हृ॒णी॒यमा॑नो॒ अप॒ हि मदैयेः॒ प्र मे॑ दे॒वानां॑ व्रत॒पा उ॑वाच ।
इंद्रो॑ वि॒द्वाँ अनु॒ हि त्वा॑ च॒चक्ष॒ तेना॒हम॑ग्ने॒ अनु॑शिष्ट॒ आगां॑ ॥
hṛṇīyámānaḥ ápa hí mát áiyeḥ prá me devā́nām vrata-pā́ḥ uvāca ǀ
índraḥ vidvā́n ánu hí tvā cacákṣa téna ahám agne ánu-śiṣṭaḥ ā́ agām ǁ
Mayst thou not grow wroth and depart from me: he who guards the law of working of the gods declared it to me; Indra knew and sought after and saw thee, and taught by him, O Fire, I have come to thee.
5.2.9
वि ज्योति॑षा बृह॒ता भा॑त्य॒ग्निरा॒विर्विश्वा॑नि कृणुते महि॒त्वा ।
प्रादे॑वीर्मा॒याः स॑हते दु॒रेवाः॒ शिशी॑ते॒ शृंगे॒ रक्ष॑से वि॒निक्षे॑ ॥
ví jyótiṣā bṛhatā́ bhāti agníḥ āvíḥ víśvāni kṛṇute mahi-tvā́ ǀ
prá ádevīḥ māyā́ḥ sahate duḥ-évāḥ śíśīte śṛ́ṅge␣íti rákṣase vi-níkṣe ǁ
This Fire shines with the Vast Light and makes all things manifest by his greatness. He overpowers the workings of knowledge that are undivine and evil in their impulse, he sharpens his horns to gore the Rakshasa.
5.2.10
उ॒त स्वा॒नासो॑ दि॒वि षं॑त्व॒ग्नेस्ति॒ग्मायु॑धा॒ रक्ष॑से॒ हंत॒वा उ॑ ।
मदे॑ चिदस्य॒ प्र रु॑जंति॒ भामा॒ न व॑रंते परि॒बाधो॒ अदे॑वीः ॥
utá svānā́saḥ diví santu agnéḥ tigmá-āyudhāḥ rákṣase hántavái ūṃ␣íti ǀ
máde cit asya prá rujanti bhā́māḥ ná varante pari-bā́dhaḥ ádevīḥ ǁ
May the voices of the Fire be sharp weapons to slay the Rakshasa. In his ecstasy his angers break down, all the undivine obstructions that besiege us cannot hem him in.
5.2.11
ए॒तं ते॒ स्तोमं॑ तुविजात॒ विप्रो॒ रथं॒ न धीरः॒ स्वपा॑ अतक्षं ।
यदीद॑ग्ने॒ प्रति॒ त्वं दे॑व॒ हर्याः॒ स्व॑र्वतीर॒प ए॑ना जयेम ॥
etám te stómam tuvi-jāta vípraḥ rátham ná dhī́raḥ su-ápāḥ atakṣam ǀ
yádi ít agne práti tvám deva háryāḥ sváḥ-vatīḥ apáḥ ena jayema ǁ
O thou of the many births, I the sage, the thinker, the man of perfect works have fashioned for thee this laud like a chariot. If, indeed, O god, thou shouldst take an answering joy in it, by this we could conquer the waters that carry the light of the sun-world.
5.2.12
तु॒वि॒ग्रीवो॑ वृष॒भो वा॑वृधा॒नो॑ऽश॒त्र्व१่र्यः सम॑जाति॒ वेदः॑ ।
इती॒मम॒ग्निम॒मृता॑ अवोचन्ब॒र्हिष्म॑ते॒ मन॑वे॒ शर्म॑ यंसद्ध॒विष्म॑ते॒ मन॑वे॒ शर्म॑ यंसत् ॥
tuvi-grī́vaḥ vṛṣabháḥ vavṛdhānáḥ aśatrú aryáḥ sám ajāti védaḥ ǀ
íti imám agním amṛ́tāḥ avocan barhíṣmate mánave śárma yaṃsat havíṣmate mánave śárma yaṃsat ǁ
The bull with the neck of might, whom no enemy can oppose, grows and comes driving from the foe the riches of knowledge. So have the immortals spoken to this Fire that he may work out peace for man when he prepares the sacred seat, work out peace for man when he brings the offering.
