Amravati (also called Amraoti) is a town in central India, in Maharashtra State (administrative headquarters of Amravati district), near Nagpur. It is a major trade center of the Berar region and the terminus of a rail spur in an important cotton-growing and grain-producing area. Cotton ginning and oilseed milling are important industries. Population 1981: 261,404; 1991: 421,576. Amravati is the site of a college of arts. The town houses seven colleges affiliated with the University of Nagpur.
