At the Feet of The Mother

Savitri Enters the Palace, pp. 417-418

Opening Remarks
The song of Narad sends thrills of joy. Just then Savitri arrives to the palace with her mission completed.

Mighty shuddering
A mighty shuddering coil of ecstasy
Crept through the deep heart of the universe.
Out of her Matter’s stupor, her mind’s dreams,
She woke, she looked upon God’s unveiled face.

A shudder of joy crept through the deep heart of the universe as Narad sang. Nature that slept in matter and dreamed in the mind woke up and saw God’s unveiled face through the song.

Savitri arrives
Even as he sang and rapture stole through earth-time
And caught the heavens, came with a call of hooves,
As of her swift heart hastening, Savitri;
Her radiant tread glimmered across the floor.

Even as Narad sang filling the earthly moments with heavenly rapture Savitri arrived on her chariot, her heart swiftly hastening and her radiant tread was seen across the floor.

Happy wonder
A happy wonder in her fathomless gaze,
Changed by the halo of her love she came;
Her eyes rich with a shining mist of joy
As one who comes from a heavenly embassy
Discharging the proud mission of her heart,
One carrying the sanction of the gods
To her love and its luminous eternity,
She stood before her mighty father’s throne
And, eager for beauty on discovered earth
Transformed and new in her heart’s miracle-light,
Saw like a rose of marvel, worshipping,
The fire-tinged sweetness of the son of Heaven.

Savitri’s fathomless gaze was filled with happy wonder born out of love. Her eyes were moist with joy. She came as from heavens having proudly fulfilled her mission with the sanction of the gods to her love blessed with luminous eternity. Standing before her father’s throne and eager to convey her heart’s discovery she seemed transformed and new in her heart. Just then she saw, marveling, Narad the heavenly sage filled with ardour and sweetness of God-love.

Vast immortal look
He flung on her his vast immortal look;
His inner gaze surrounded her with its light
And reining back knowledge from his immortal lips
He cried to her, “Who is this that comes, the bride,
The flame-born, and round her illumined head
Pouring their lights her hymeneal pomps
Move flashing about her? From what green glimmer of glades
Retreating into dewy silences
Or half-seen verge of waters moon-betrayed
Bringst thou this glory of enchanted eyes?

Narad cast on Savitri his vast immortal look. His inner gaze surrounded her with its light and holding back what he saw, he instead asked her as to who she is who seemed as a bride born of the flame (yajna), with a halo around her head with the pomps of love pouring their lights and flashing about her. He asked her as to what forest spaces retreating into dewy silences she had travelled or from what half-seen verge of moonlit dreams she brings the glory filled in her enchanted eyes.

Closing Remarks
Narad has seen with his seer vision the being of Savitri and the future. But he seems to hold back his knowledge and start a conversation with the golden princess Savitri.

There is no harm in the vital taking part in the joy of the rest of the being; it is the participation of the vital that makes it dynamic and communicates it to the external nature.
