Canto Three. The Yoga of the King: The Yoga of the Soul’s Release
A world’s desire compelled her mortal birth.
एक विश्व-कामना ने उसे मर्त्य जन्म हित बाध्य कर दिया।
One in the front of the immemorial quest,
Protagonist of the mysterious play
In which the Unknown pursues himself through forms
And limits his eternity by the hours
And the blind Void struggles to live and see,
A thinker and toiler in the ideal’s air,
Brought down to earth’s dumb need her radiant power.
इस अविस्मृत संधान का एक अग्रगामी नेता था,
वही इस रहस्य का नायक सूत्रधार था।
जिसमें परम अज्ञेय स्वयं अपना अनेक रूपों में पीछा करता है
और अपनी शाश्वतता घण्टों की अवधि में बांध देता है
और अन्धा असत् जीने और देखने हित संघर्षरत रहता है,
इस आदर्श वातावरण में वह एक मनीषी और श्रमिक था,
इस धरती की मूढ़ आवश्यकता हित वह उसकी ज्योतिर्मयी शक्ति को नीचे उतार लाया।
His was a spirit that stooped from larger spheres
Into our province of ephemeral sight,
A colonist from immortality.
योगी की आत्मा बृहत्तर स्तरों से उतर नीचे आयी थी
हमारे इस क्षणिक द़ृष्टिकोण के राज्य में,
वह अमर साम्राज्य से आया एक उपनिवेशक था।
A pointing beam on earth’s uncertain roads,
His birth held up a symbol and a sign;
His human self like a translucent cloak
Covered the All-Wise who leads the unseeing world.
पृथ्वी के अनिश्चित मार्गों पर राह दर्शाता एक प्रकाशस्तम्भ,
उसका जन्म एक संकेत था जो एक प्रतीक और एक चिह्न धारण किये था;
उसके मानवीय व्यक्तित्व ने एक पारदर्शी लबादे समान
उस सर्वज्ञ प्रभु को ढका हुआ था, जो इस अन्धे जगत् का नेतृत्व करता है।
Affiliated to cosmic Space and Time
And paying here God’s debt to earth and man
A greater sonship was his divine right.
इस वैश्विक देशकाल सेसम्बद्ध हो
यहां पर धरा और मानव हित प्रभु का ऋण चुका रहा था
पर एक महत्तर पैतृकता उसका दिव्य अधिकार था।
Although consenting to mortal ignorance,
His knowledge shared the Light ineffable.
यद्यपि उसने मृत्युलोक की अविद्या को स्वीकारा था
पर उसका ज्ञान अनिर्वचनीय परा-ज्योति का भागीदार था।
A strength of the original Permanence
Entangled in the moment and its flow,
He kept the vision of the Vasts behind:
A power was in him from the Unknowable.
आदि नित्य परम का एक शक्ति रूप था
जो अनित्य क्षण के कालप्रवाह में उलझ गया था,
उसने विराट् के आत्मदर्शन को परोक्ष में रखा:
अज्ञेय प्रभु का एक आत्मबल उसके अन्तर में था।
An archivist of the symbols of the Beyond,
A treasurer of superhuman dreams,
He bore the stamp of mighty memories
And shed their grandiose ray on human life.
परात्परता के प्रतीकों का एक लेखपाल था,
अतिमानवीय सपनों का एक कोषाध्यक्ष था,
महती-स्मृतियों की एक छाप उस पर अंकित थी
और यह निज प्रभावी किरण मानव जीवन पर बिखेरती।
His days were a long growth to the Supreme.
उसके दिवस परमेश्वर की पूर्णता कीओर विकसित थे।
A skyward being nourishing its roots[22]
On sustenance from occult spiritual founts
Climbed through white rays to meet an unseen Sun.
एक गगनोन्मुखी उसकी सत्ता अपनी जड़ों का पोषण
निज गुह्य आध्यात्मिक स्रोतों से करती
एक अगोचर सूर्यदेव से मिलने शुभ्र किरणों के सहारे चढ़ गयी।
His soul lived as eternity’s delegate,
His mind was like a fire assailing heaven,
His will a hunter in the trails of light.
उसका जीव-पुरुष शाश्वत का प्रतिनिधि बन रहता;
उसका मन अग्नि समान स्वर्ग पर अभ्याक्रमण करता,
उसका संकल्प एक शिकारी सम ज्योति के पदचिह्नों को खोजता।
An ocean impulse lifted every breath;
Each action left the footprints of a god,
Each moment was a beat of puissant wings.
उसके प्रत्येक श्वास को एक प्रेरणा का सागर उद्वेलित कर जाता;
उसका प्रत्येक कर्म देवत्व के पद चिह्नों को छोड़ जाता,
प्रत्येक पल मानों एक दिव्य पंखों कीफड़फड़ाहट होता।
The little plot of our mortality
Touched by this tenant from the heights became
A playground of the living Infinite.
हमारे मृत्युलोक का यह अति-लघु क्षेत्र
उन्नत लोकों के इस अधिवासी के स्पर्शमात्र से
जीवित चिरन्तन प्रभु की एक लीलाभूमि बन गया।
This bodily appearance is not all;
The form deceives, the person is a mask;
Hid deep in man celestial powers can dwell.
हमारा यह शारीरिक आभास ही सब कुछ नहीं है;
यह रूप छलता है, यह व्यक्तित्व एक मुखौटा है;
मानव के अन्तर में गुह्य शक्तियांस्वर्गिक ज्ञाक्तियां गोपनीयता में रह सकती हैं।
His fragile ship conveys through the sea of years
An incognito of the Imperishable.
उसका भंगुर जहाजवर्षों सागर के मध्य से
परम अविनाशी को गोपनीयता से वहन कर ले जाता है।
A spirit that is a flame of God abides,
A fiery portion of the Wonderful,
Artist of his own beauty and delight,
Immortal in our mortal poverty.
उसमें एक आत्मा परमेश्वर की एक शिखा वास करती है,
उस चरम-आद़्भुत्य का एक तेजोमय अंश है,
वह अपने आत्म सौन्दर्य और सुखानन्द का रचनाकार है,
यही हमारी मर्त्य दरिद्रता में अमरत्व है।
This sculptor of the forms of the Infinite,
This screened unrecognised Inhabitant,
Initiate of his own veiled mysteries,
Hides in a small dumb seed his cosmic thought.
अनन्त के आकारों का यह शिल्पी,
पट के पीछे छिपा, अज्ञात यह दिव्य-वासी,
अपने अवगुण्ठित रहस्यों का आत्म-प्रणेता,
अपने विश्व विचार को एक अणु मूक बीजमन्त्र में छिपा रखता है।
In the mute strength of the occult Idea
Determining predestined shape and act,
Passenger from life to life, from scale to scale,
Changing his imaged self from form to form,
He regards the icon growing by his gaze
And in the worm foresees the coming god.
उस गुह्य परम-भाव की मौन शक्ति में
पूर्वनियत आकार और कर्म निर्धारित हैं,
वह जीवन से जीवन का यात्री, स्तर दर स्तर पार करता,
अपने आभासित व्यक्तित्व को प्रत्येक देह में बदलता रहता है,
अपनी द़ृष्टि के नीचे वह प्रभु छवि को बढ़ते लखता है
और कीट में आनेवाले देव का पूर्वाभास करता है।
At last the traveller in the paths of Time
Arrives on the frontiers of eternity.
अन्त में महाकाल की राहों का यह पथिक
चिरन्तन की सीमाओं पर जा पहुंचता है।
In the transient symbol of humanity draped,
He feels his substance of undying self
And loses his kinship to mortality.
मानवता के इस क्षण भंगुर प्रतीक में लिपटा,
वह अपने अमर चैत्य व्यक्तित्व के सारतत्त्व का अनुभव पाता है
और मर्त्यता के साथ अपना अन्तर सम्बन्ध खो देता है।
A beam of the Eternal smites his heart,[23]
His thought stretches into infinitude:
All in him turns to spirit vastnesses.
शाश्वत प्रभु की एक ज्योति-रेखा उसके हृदय को कचोटती है,
उसका चिन्तन अनन्तता तक विस्तृत हो जाता है,
उसकी स्रत्ता के सकल अंग आत्मा की विशालता कीओर मुड़ जाते।
His soul breaks out to join the Oversoul,
His life is oceaned by that superlife.
He has drunk from the breasts of the Mother of the worlds;
A topless supernature fills his frame:
She adopts his spirit’s everlasting ground
As the security of her changing world
And shapes the figure of her unborn mights.
उसका जीव ऊर्ध्वस्थित आत्मा से जुड़ने को बन्धन-मुक्त हो जाता है,
उसका प्राण अब परात्पर प्राण-सागर से घिर जाता है
जग-जननी के पयोधरों से पय-पान कर वह मस्त हो जाता है;
एक असीम पराप्रकृति उसके आकार को पूर देती है:
पराचेतना उसकी आत्मा के चिर-नित्य क्षेत्र को अपना लेती है
इस अस्थिर परिवर्तनशील संसार में वह उसे एक सुरक्षण सम ग्रहण कर लती है
और उसमें अपनी अजात सामर्थ्यो के आकारों को रूपायित करती है।
Immortally she conceives herself in him,
In the creature the unveiled creatrix works:
Her face is seen through his face, her eyes through his eyes;
Her being is his through a vast identity.
उसमें वह अपने आत्मरूप की अमरता को लक्ष्य करती है,
इसी प्राणी में वह जगद्धात्री प्रकट रूप में कार्य करती है:
अब उसके मुख और नयनों में देवी की छवि औ’ ज्योति के दर्शन होते हैं;
एक विशाल तदात्मता के द्वारा देवी की सत्ता उसकी हो जाती है।
Then is revealed in man the overt Divine.
तब मानव में प्रत्यक्ष दिव्यता का दर्शन होता है।
A static Oneness and dynamic Power
Descend in him, the integral Godhead’s seals;
His soul and body take that splendid stamp.
एक निष्क्रिय परम एकत्व और सक्रिय ओजस्विनी पराशक्ति
उसमें अवतरित हो जाती है, ये समग्र देवत्व की मुहरें हैं;
उसकी आत्मा और काया उस भव्य छाप को धारण कर लेती हैं।
A long dim preparation is man’s life,
A circle of toil and hope and war and peace
Tracked out by Life on Matter’s obscure ground.
In his climb to a peak no feet have ever trod,
He seeks through a penumbra shot with flame
A veiled reality half-known, ever missed,
A search for something or someone never found,
Cult of an ideal never made real here,
An endless spiral of ascent and fall
Until at last is reached the giant point
Through which his Glory shines for whom we were made
And we break into the infinity of God.
मानव का जीवन एक दीर्घ धूमिल मन्द तैयारी है,
कठिन श्रम और आशा एवं युद्ध-शान्ति का घूमता क्रम है
जिसे महाप्राण पुरुष जड़तत्त्व की अंधेरी भूमि पर आंकता है
उन शिखरों पर चढ़ने को जहां पहले कोई पदचाप नहीं पडी़,
वह नभ में दागी गयी एक ज्वाला के प्रकाश में खोजता है
एक अर्धज्ञात गोपित यथार्थ को, जो सतत उसकी पकड़ से फिसल जाता है,
किसी सत् की खोज है जो कभी नहीं मिल पाया है,
एक आदर्श का पन्थ है जो यहां कभी सत्य नहीं हो पाया है,
उत्थान और पतन का एक अनन्त खुलता कुण्डल है
जो सतत गतिशील है जब तक अन्त में इसे विराट् बिन्दु प्राप्त नहीं हो जाता
जिसके माध्यम से उसकी दिव्य महिमा प्रकाशमान है जिसके लिए हम बने हैं
और तब हम प्रभु की चिरन्तरता में बंधन तोड़ प्रवेश कर जाते हैं।
Across our nature’s border line we escape
Into supernature’s arc of living light.
अपने स्वभाव की सीमा रेखा पार कर मुक्त हो जाते हैं
परा-प्रकृति की जीवन्त ज्योति के घेरे में प्रवेश कर जाते हैं।
This now was witnessed in that son of Force,
In him that high transition laid its base.
यही सब अब उस चित्-शक्ति के पुत्र में प्रत्यक्ष दिखने लगा था;
उसके अन्तर में उस उच्च रूपान्तर ने अपना आधार बना लिया था।
Original and supernal Immanence
Of which all Nature’s process is the art,
The cosmic Worker set his secret hand[24]
To turn this frail mud-engine to heaven-use.
सबका मूलाधार और परम अन्तर्यामी प्रभु
जिसकी यह समस्त विश्वप्रकृति की प्रक्रिया एक कला है,
उस विश्व परमशिल्पी ने अपना गुह्य हस्त स्थित कर
इस दुर्बल माटी के इंजन को मोड़, दिव्यता के कार्य हित उपयोगीबना दिया।
A Presence wrought behind the ambiguous screen:
It beat his soil to bear a Titan’s weight,
Refining half-hewn blocks of natural strength
It built his soul into a statued God.
एक दिव्य उपस्थिति ने यह कार्य इस संदिग्ध धूमिल पट के पीछे गठित किया:
इसने साधक की माटी को पीटकर दानवी बोझ उठाने योग्य बनाया,
उसकी प्राकृतिक शक्ति के अध-बने खण्डों को परिष्कृत कर
इसने उसके जीव को एक देव-प्रतिमा में ढाल दिया।
The Craftsman of the magic stuff of self
Who labours at his high and difficult plan
In the wide workshop of the wonderful world,
Modelled in inward Time his rhythmic parts.
व्यक्तित्व के जादुई तत्त्व का वह दिव्य शिल्पकार
अपनी जटिल और महती योजना में श्रमरत रहता है,
इस अद़्भुत संसार की विशाल प्रयोगशाला में,
उसने अश्वपति के छन्दमय अंगों को उसके अन्तरंग काल के अनुरूप गढ़ दिया।
Then came the abrupt transcendent miracle:
The masked immaculate Grandeur could outline,
At travail in the occult womb of life,
His dreamed magnificence of things to be.
तब हठात् परात्परता का आद़्भुत्य प्रकट हो गया:
मुखौटे के पीछे छिपी अमल श्रीशोभा आंक सकी
प्राण के गुह्य गर्भ में प्रसव पीड़ा से व्यथित,
आने वाली भावी वस्तुओं के भव्य रूप को जो उसने स्वप्न में देखा था
A crown of the architecture of the worlds,
A mystery of married Earth and Heaven
Annexed divinity to the mortal scheme.
सकल लोकों के निर्माता विश्वकर्मा के यह शीर्ष मुकुट जैसी,
स्वर्ग और धरती के गठबन्धन का एक रहस्य थी
जिसने दिव्यता को नश्वर पार्थिव योजना से जोड़ दिया था।
A Seer was born, a shining Guest of Time.
एक द्रष्टा मनीषी जन्मा, युग का दीप्तिमन अतिथि प्रकटा।
For him mind’s limiting firmament ceased above,
In the griffin forefront of the Night and Day
A gap was rent in the all-concealing vault;
The conscious ends of being went rolling back:
The landmarks of the little person fell,
The island ego joined its continent:
Overpassed was this world of rigid limiting forms:
Life’s barriers opened into the Unknown.
उसके मन को सीमाबन्ध करते आकाश बहुत पीछे छूट गये थे।
कालनिशा और ज्ञान-दिवस के मध्य बने अग्रिम मुख्य द्वार में
उस समस्त की गोपनीय तिजोरी में एक फाटन आ गयी;
सत्ता के दोनों ध्रुवों के सचेत छोर पीछे लिपट खुल गये:
क्षुद्र अहम् व्यक्तित्व के सब चिह्न छूट गये,
लघु-अहंकार का टापू जैसे अपने महाद्वीप से जुड़ गया।
वह इस जगत् की अनम्य सीमित आकृतियों को पार कर गया था:
उसके जीवन की सकल सीमाएं परम-अज्ञेय में खुल गयी थीं।
Abolished were conception’s covenants
And, striking off subjection’s rigorous clause,
Annulled the soul’s treaty with Nature’s nescience.
धारणाओं की नियमावलियां सब रद्द कर दीगयीं
और, दासत्व की निर्मम कठोर धारा काट दी गयीथी,
विश्व-प्रकृति की निश्चेतना के साथ हुई जीव की सन्धि अमान्य हो गयी।
All the grey inhibitions were torn off
And broken the intellect’s hard and lustrous lid;
Truth unpartitioned found immense sky-room;
An empyrean vision saw and knew;
The bounded mind became a boundless light,
The finite self mated with Infinity.
समस्त धूमिल कलुषित निषेध फाड़ दिये गये
और बौद्धिकता का कठोर चमकता ढकना भंग कर दिया;
अविभाजित पूर्ण सत्य को एक विशाल आकाश-कक्ष मिल गया था;
एक दिव्य उन्नत द़ृष्टि ने सब अवलोका और जान लिया;
यह बंधा हुआ मन अब एक असीम प्रकाशमान प्रज्ञा बन गया,
यह अनित्य प्राणसत्ता अपनी नित्यता से जुड़ गयी।
His march now soared into an eagle’s flight.
उसकी प्रयाणयात्रा अब एक गरुड़ सम उडा़न भरने लगी।
Out of apprenticeship to Ignorance[25]
Wisdom upraised him to her master craft
And made him an arch-mason of the soul,
A builder of the Immortal’s secret house,
An aspirant to supernal Timelessness:
Freedom and empire called to him from on high;
Above mind’s twilight and life’s star-led night
There gleamed the dawn of a spiritual day.
अविद्या के प्रशिक्षण से उसे बाहर निकाल
प्रज्ञा न उसे अपने शिल्पाचार्य के पद पर आसीन कर दिया
और उसे जीव पुरुष का मुख्य निर्माता बना दिया,
नित्य अमर-प्रभु के गुह्य गृह का एक रचनाकार,
अलौकिक परम कालातीत स्थिति का एक अभीप्सु:
उसके लिए स्वतन्त्रता और साम्राज्य का आवाहन ऊर्ध्व से आया था;
मन के झुटपुटे प्रकाश और जीवन की तारों से झिलमिलाती रात्रि के बाद
अब वहां एक आध्यात्मिक दिवस की उषा का प्रकाश चमका।
As so he grew into his larger self,
Humanity framed his movements less and less,
A greater being saw a greater world.
A fearless will for knowledge dared to erase
The lines of safety reason draws that bar
Mind’s soar, soul’s dive into the Infinite.
ज्यों ज्यों वह अपनी बृहत्तर आत्म-चेतना में बढ़ने लगा
उसकी गतियों में मानवीय गठन कम होने लगा,
उसने एक महत्तर सत्ता बन एक महत्तर जगत का दर्शन पा लिया था
ज्ञान हेतु एक अभय संकल्प ने दुःसाहस किया
सुरक्षा की रेखाओं को मिटाने का जिन्हें विवेक और बुद्धि सीमा सम खींच देती हैं
मन की उड़ान तथा अन्तरात्मा को अनन्तता में कूदने से रोकने को।
Even his first steps broke our small earth-bounds
And loitered in a vaster freer air.
योगी के प्रथम कदमों ने ही हमारी धरा की लघु सीमाओँ को भंग कर दिया
और एक विशालता मुक्त हवा में उसने विचरण किया।
In hands sustained by a transfiguring Might
He caught up lightly like a giant’s bow
Left slumbering in a sealed and secret cave
The powers that sleep unused in man within.
एक रुपान्तरकारिणी महाशक्ति द्वारा संपोषित करों में
उसने सहजता से धारण किया एक दैत्य के धनुष-सम बल को
जो एक बन्द गुह्य गुफा में शान्त पडा़ था,
ये शक्तियां थीं जो मानव के अन्तर में अनुपयोगी पड़ी सोती हें।
He made of miracle a normal act
And turned to a common part of divine works,
Magnificently natural at this height,
Efforts that would shatter the strength of mortal hearts,
Pursued in a royalty of mighty ease
Aims too sublime for Nature’s daily will:
The gifts of the spirit crowding came to him;
They were his life’s pattern and his privilege.
चमत्कार को उसने एक दैनिक साधारण कार्य बना दिया
और दिव्य कर्मों को एक सहज स्वभाव में बदल दिया,
इस उच्च शिखर पर वह भव्य रूप में स्वाभाविक सहज रहता
जिन प्रयासों से नश्वर हृदयों कीशक्ति चूर चूर हो सकती है,
एक राजसी सामर्थ्य की सहजता से लगा रहता वह उन्हें पूरा करने में
विश्व-प्रकृति के दैनिक मनोरथ के लिए उसके लक्ष्य अति उदात्त थे:
चित्-शक्ति के उपहार अब उसके पास भीड़ लगाये रहते;
वे अब उसके जीवन का माप और विशेषाधिकार थे।
A pure perception lent its lucent joy:
Its intimate vision waited not to think;
It enveloped all Nature in a single glance,
It looked into the very self of things;
Deceived no more by form he saw the soul.
एक विशुद्ध प्रत्यक्ष बोध उसे उज्ज्वल आनन्द प्रदान करता:
इसकी आत्मीय अन्तर्द़ृष्टि मनन की प्रतीक्षा नहीं करती;
एक अकेली चितवन में ही वह सकल प्रकृति को धर लेती,
यह वस्तुओं को उसके आत्मतत्त्व तक अन्तर में देख लेती;
अब वह बहिर्रुपों से धोखा न खाता वह आत्मा को देखता।
In beings it knew what lurked to them unknown;
It seized the idea in mind, the wish in the heart;
It plucked out from grey folds of secrecy[26]
The motives which from their own sight men hide.
प्राणियों में उसे ज्ञात हो जाता कि अनजाने उनके अन्तर में क्या छिपा है
वह उनके विचारों को मन में ही पकड़ लेता, कामना को हृदय में धर लेता:
रहस्य की धूमिल पर्तोंसे यह तोड़ लेता
उन उद्देश्यों को जिन्हें मनुष्य स्वयं अपनी द़ृष्टि तक से छिपाते हैं।
He felt the beating life in other men
Invade him with their happiness and their grief;
Their love, their anger, their unspoken hopes
Entered in currents or in pouring waves
Into the immobile ocean of his calm.
वह अनुभव करता दूसरे मनुष्य के हृदय की धड़कनों को
जो अपने मोद तथा दुःख के साथ उस पर आक्रमण करते;
उनका प्रेम उनका क्रोध उनकी अनकही आशाएं;
धाराप्रवाह उसमें प्रवेश करतीं या लहरों समान टूटतीं
उसकी शान्ति के अचल महासागर में।
He heard the inspired sound of his own thoughts
Re-echoed in the vault of other minds;
The world’s thought-streams travelled into his ken;
His inner self grew near to others’ selves
And bore a kinship’s weight, a common tie,
Yet stood untouched, king of itself, alone.
वह अपने ही निजी आत्मविचारों की उत्प्रेरक ध्वनि को
अन्य मानसों के अन्तरों में प्रतिध्वनित होते सुनता;
संसार की विचार-धाराएं उसके अपने अन्तर गेह कीओर प्रवाहित थीं;
उसकी अन्तर आत्मचेतना अन्य चेतनाओं के समीप खिंच आयी थी,
और आत्मीयता का भार उठाती एक सामूहिक प्रेम का बन्धन बन गयी,
फिर भी अस्पर्श्य, आत्म-सम्राट् एकाकी अद्वितीय विराजमान रहता।
A magical accord quickened and attuned
To ethereal symphonies the old earthy strings;
It raised the servitors of mind and life
To be happy partners in the soul’s response,
Tissue and nerve were turned to sensitive chords,
Records of lustre and ecstasy; it made
The body’s means the spirit’s acolytes.
एक जादुई सुरसंगति ने तीव्र हो सुर से सुर मिलाया
स्वर्गलोक की रागिनियों को पार्थिव पुरानी वीणा के तारों सेतालबद्ध कर दिया;
इसने मन और जीवन की सेवा में लगी इन्द्रियों को उन्नत कर दिया
जिससे वे आत्मा को प्रत्युत्तर देतीं प्रमुदित सह भागीदार बन गयीं।
देह के तन्तु और कोष संवेदनशीलतन्त्रियों में बदल गये,
वे दीप्ति और आह्लाद को आंकते; जिसने
इस देह के अंगों को आत्मशक्ति का अनुचर बना दिया।
A heavenlier function with a finer mode
Lit with its grace man’s outward earthliness;
The soul’s experience of its deeper sheaths
No more slept drugged by Matter’s dominance.
एक विशुद्धतर सूक्ष्मतर रीति की एक स्वर्गिक प्रक्रिया ने
अपनी शोभा से मानव की बाहरी पार्थिवता को चमका दिया;
इसके गहनतर कोषों का आत्मानुभव
अब जड़तत्त्व की प्रभुता के नशे में चूर हो और नहीं सोया।
In the dead wall closing us from wider self,
Into a secrecy of apparent sleep,
The mystic tract beyond our waking thoughts,
A door parted, built in by Matter’s force,
Releasing things unseized by earthly sense:
A world unseen, unknown by outward mind
Appeared in the silent spaces of the soul.
हमारे विशालतर आत्मतत्त्व से विलग करती जड़ता की ये मृत रूढ़ दीवारें
हमें चहुं ओर से घेर एक गुप्त आभासी निद्रा में डुबो रखती हैं,
जाग्रत् विचारों से परे के रहस्यमय पथ पर,
एक बन्द द्वार खुल गया जिसे जड़तत्त्व की ऊर्जा ने बनाया था,
इसने पार्थिव चेतना द्वारा अग्राह्य वस्तुओं को प्रकटा दिया:
यह एक अद़ृश्य जगत्, बाहरी मन जिससे अनजान था
उसकी अन्तरात्मा के नीरव प्रदेशों में प्रकट हो गया।
He sat in secret chambers looking out
Into the luminous countries of the unborn
Where all things dreamed by the mind are seen and true
And all that the life longs for is drawn close.
अश्वपति ने रहस्यमय कक्षों में आसीन हो बाहर झांका
अजात के दीप्तिमान धामों को देखा
जहां मन द्वारा स्वप्नायी गयी सब वस्तुएं प्रत्यक्ष एवं सत्य हैं
और जिस सब के लिये जीवन लालायित है समीप खिंच आती हैं।
He saw the Perfect in their starry homes
Wearing the glory of a deathless form[27]
Lain in the arms of the Eternal’s peace,
Rapt in the heart-beats of God-ecstasy.
उसने पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम को अपने तारामय धामों में देखा
एक अमराकृति की महिमाश्री को धारण किये
चिरन्तन-शान्ति की बांहों मेंशयन करता,
प्रभु-आह्लाद के हृदय-स्पन्दनों की विभोरता में लीन था।
He lived in the mystic space where thought is born
And will is nursed by an ethereal Power
And fed on the white milk of the Eternal’s strengths
Till it grows into the likeness of a god.
वह उस गुह्याकाश में जहां सेविचार जन्मता है रहने लगा,
और वहां संकल्प का पोषण एक सूक्ष्म अलौकिक शक्ति करती है,
और चिरन्तन की शक्तियों का श्वेत दुग्ध पान कर
वह स्वयं एक देवता सम रूप धार विकसित हो जाता है।
In the Witness’s occult rooms with mind-built walls
On hidden interiors, lurking passages
Opened the windows of the inner sight.
मन द्वारा निर्मित दीवारों के पीछे सांक्षी-पुरुष के गुह्य कक्षों में
गुप्त अन्तरंगों में, छिपे गलियारों में
अन्तर्द़ृष्टि की खिड़कियां खुल गयीं।
He owned the house of undivided Time.
अविभाजित त्रिकाल के घर का वह स्वामी था।
Lifting the heavy curtain of the flesh
He stood upon a threshold serpent-watched,
And peered into gleaming endless corridors,
Silent and listening in the silent heart
For the coming of the new and the unknown.
इस हाड़मांस के बोझिल पट को उठाकर
वह जा खडा़ हुआ कुण्डलिनी द्वारा रक्षित देहरी पर,
और उन दीप्तिमान अनन्त दालानों में झांका,
नीरव हो और ध्यान से सुना निस्तब्ध हृदय में
उस नूतन और अज्ञात के आगमन के विषय में।
He gazed across the empty stillnesses
And heard the footsteps of the undreamed Idea
In the far avenues of the Beyond.
उन रिक्त स्थिरताओं के उस पार उसने अवलोका
और स्वप्नातीत चिद़्बोध की चरण चाप
परलोकों की सुदूर वीथियों से आती सुनी।
He heard the secret Voice, the Word that knows,
And saw the secret face that is our own.
उसने गुह्य अन्तर्घोष को, उस सर्वज्ञ वाक् को सुना,
और उस गुह्य आनन को जो हमारा अपना है, देखा।
The inner planes uncovered their crystal doors;
Strange powers and influences touched his life.
उन अन्तर स्तरों ने अपने स्फटिक द्वारों को खोल दिया;
विचित्र शक्तियों औ’ प्रभावों ने उसके जीवन को स्पर्श किया।
A vision came of higher realms than ours,
A consciousness of brighter fields and skies,
Of beings less circumscribed than brief-lived men
And subtler bodies than these passing frames,
Objects too fine for our material grasp,
Acts vibrant with a superhuman light
And movements pushed by a superconscient force,
And joys that never flowed through mortal limbs,
And lovelier scenes than earth’s and happier lives.
हमारे से उच्चतर धामों का एक दिव्यदर्शन प्रकटा,
यह उज्ज्वलतर क्षेत्रों औ’ नभों की एक चेतना थी,
क्षणजीवी मानव की अपेक्षा ये सत्ताएं कम सीमाबद्ध थीं
और इन अस्थायी आकारों की अपेक्षा उनकी काया सूक्ष्मतर थी,
हमारी जड़ स्थूल पकड़ के लिए वे पदार्थ अति मृदु सूक्ष्म थे,
उनके कर्म एक परामानवीय ज्योति से स्पन्दित थे
और एक पराचेतना की गतियों को संचालित करते,
और जो कभी मर्त्य अंगों में प्रवाहित नहीं हुए ऐसे हर्ष थे,
धरती की अपेक्षा द़ृश्य सुरम्यतर और जीवन सुखीतर थे।
A consciousness of beauty and of bliss,
A knowledge which became what it perceived,
Replaced the separated sense and heart
And drew all Nature into its embrace.
शोभा और आह्लाद से पूर्ण एक चेतना थी
जो अनुभव करती वही बन जाती ऐसी एक प्रज्ञा थी,
जिसने पृथक्ता के बोध और भावना का स्थान ले लिया
और सकल विश्व-प्रकृति को अपने आलिंगन में खींच लिया।
The mind leaned out to meet the hidden worlds.[28]
Air glowed and teemed with marvellous shapes and hues,
In the nostrils quivered celestial fragrances,
On the tongue lingered the honey of paradise.
उसके मन का झुकाव भी इन गुप्त जगतों के मिलन हेतु हो आया:
वातावरण प्रदीप्त हो अद़्भुत आकारों और रंगों से भर गया,
नथुने अलौकिक गंधों सेकम्पायमान होते,
जिह्वा पर नन्दन कानन के मधु का स्वाद रहता।
A channel of universal harmony,
Hearing was a stream of magic audience,
A bed for occult sounds earth cannot hear.
विश्व-सामंजस्यता की एक प्रवाहिका बन
श्रवणशक्ति एक जादुई संगीतधारा कीश्रोता थी,
गुह्य ध्वनियां जिन्हें पार्थिवता सुन नहीं सकती, उसका बिछौना थीं।
Out of a covert tract of slumber self
The voice came of a truth submerged, unknown
That flows beneath the cosmic surfaces,
Only mid an omniscient silence heard,
Held by intuitive heart and secret sense.
सुप्त चैत्यपुरुष के एक गुप्त पथ से
एक निमग्न सत्य की वाचा फूट बाहर आ गयी,
जो अज्ञात भाव से इन वैश्विक धरातलों के नीचे प्रवाहित है,
यह केवल एक सर्वव्यापक नीरवता में सुनायी देती है,
और अन्तर्बोधी हृदय एवं गुह्य इन्द्रिय बोध द्वारा ही धरी जाती है।
It caught the burden of secrecies sealed and dumb,
It voiced the unfulfilled demand of earth
And the song of promise of unrealised heavens
And all that hides in an omnipotent Sleep.
इस सत्य ने मुहरबन्द मूक रहस्यों के भारी उत्तरदायित्व को उठा,
पृथ्वी की असफल अपूर्ण कामना को वाचा दी
और अचरितार्थ स्वर्गों की प्रतिश्रुति का गान गाया
और सर्वसामर्थ्यशाली जड़ निद्रा में जो सब छिपा है, बताया।
In the unceasing drama carried by Time
On its long listening flood that bears the world’s
Insoluble doubt on a pilgrimage without goal,
A laughter of sleepless pleasure foamed and spumed
And murmurings of desire that cannot die:
A cry came of the world’s delight to be,
The grandeur and greatness of its will to live,
Recall of the soul’s adventure into space,
A traveller through the magic centuries
And being’s labour in Matter’s universe,
Its search for the mystic meaning of its birth
And joy of high spiritual response,
Its throb of satisfaction and content
In all the sweetness of the gifts of life,
Its large breath and pulse and thrill of hope and fear,
Its taste of pangs and tears and ecstasy,
Its rapture’s poignant beat of sudden bliss,
The sob of its passion and unending pain.
युगान्तरों से अविराम चल रहे इस नाटक में
त्रिकाल अपने दीर्घ श्रोता प्रबल प्रवाह पर वहन करता
संसार की समाधानातील शंका को एक ध्येयहीन यात्रा पर लिये चलता है,
यह निद्राहीन सुख के एक हास्य को फेनाता और झाग उड़ाता है
और उस कामना की बड़बड़ाहटों से भरा है जो कभी नहीं मर सकी हैं:
वहां संसार के भावी आगामी सुख की एक पुकार सुनायी दी,
यह इसकी जीवित रहने की इच्छा की महानता और भव्यता की थी,
इसने चैत्यात्मा को अन्तरिक्ष की साहसी यात्रा की याद दिला दी,
इन जादुई शताब्दियों का यह एक यात्री है
और जड़तत्त्व के विश्व में आत्मसत्ता का परिश्रम है,
अपने जन्म के रहस्यपूर्ण अर्थ के लिए उसकी यह खोज
उच्च आध्यात्मिक प्रत्युत्तरी हर्ष-आनन्द की है,
तुष्टि और सन्तोष का इसका स्फुरण एवं स्पन्दन
जीवन के उपहारों के प्रति सम्पूर्ण माधुर्य का है,
इसकी उदार श्वास, नाड़ी स्पन्दन और आशा और भय के रोमांच में,
इसकी टीसनों की कसक आंसुओं और आह्लाद के स्वाद में,
आकस्मिक आनन्द की भावसमाधि की मर्मस्पर्शी धड़कन में,
इसके आवेश और अन्तहीन पीड़ा की सिसकी में भी आनन्द की खोज है।
The murmur and whisper of the unheard sounds
Which crowd around our hearts but find no window
To enter, swelled into a canticle[29]
Of all that suffers to be still unknown
And all that labours vainly to be born
And all the sweetness none will ever taste
And all the beauty that will never be.
अश्रुत ध्वनियों की मरमराहट और फुसफुसाहट
जो हमारे हृदय के चारोंओर भीड़ लगाये रहती है किन्तु अब
उसमें प्रवेश हित एक भी गवाक्ष नहीं पा रही थी,
एक सामूहिक भजन में उमड़ती ये ध्वनियां थीं उनकी जो व्यक्त होने को
अभी तक अनजाने दुःख भोग रहे हैं एवं जन्मने हित निष्फल प्रयासरत हैं,
और जिस माधुर्य का आस्वादन कभी कोई नहीं पायेगा
और उस सुषमा की जो कभी रूपायित नहीं होगी।
Inaudible to our deaf mortal ears
The wide world-rhythms wove their stupendous chant
To which life strives to fit our rhyme-beats here,
Melting our limits in the illimitable,
Tuning the finite to infinity.
हमारी नश्वर श्रवणशक्ति जो सुनने में बधिर है
उन विशाल विश्व-धुनों ने अपना घोर प्रचण्ड कीर्तन रच लिया था
इसी की संगत में यहां जीवन हमारे सुर-तालों कोढालने हित प्रयासरत है,
हमारी सीमाओं को उस असीम में पिघलाकर,
इस अनित्य को नित्यता के साथ सुरबद्ध करता है।
A low muttering rose from the subconscient caves,
The stammer of the primal ignorance;
Answer to that inarticulate questioning,
There stooped with lightning neck and thunder’s wings
A radiant hymn to the Inexpressible
And the anthem of the superconscient light.
अवचेतन गुह्य कन्दराओं से एक धीमी मन्द बड़बड़ाहट उठी,
यह आदि अविद्या की हकलाहट थी;
उस अटपटे अस्पष्ट प्रश्न के प्रत्युत्तर में नीचे झुक आयी-
विद्युती कण्ठीऔर तूफानी पंखों की एक ज्योतिर्मयी-
वन्दना जो अनिर्वचनीय प्रभु को अर्पित थी
और परम चैतन्य ज्योति की स्तुति थी।
All was revealed there none can here express;
Vision and dream were fables spoken by truth
Or symbols more veridical than fact,
Or were truths enforced by supernatural seals.
अब वहां सब प्रकट था जिसका यहां कोई वर्णन नहीं कर पाया है;
देवदर्शन और स्वप्न सब कहीं गयी नीति कथाएं हैं
या यथार्थ से अधिक प्रमाणित प्रतीक हैं,
या परा-प्रकृति के ताले को तोड़ निकाले गये सत्य हैं।
Immortal eyes approached and looked in his,
And beings of many kingdoms neared and spoke:
The ever-living whom we name as dead
Could leave their glory beyond death and birth
To utter the wisdom which exceeds all phrase:
The kings of evil and the kings of good,
Appellants at the reason’s judgment seat,
Proclaimed the gospel of their opposites,
And all believed themselves spokesmen of God:
The gods of light and titans of the dark
Battled for his soul as for a costly prize.
अमर देवों के नेत्र समीप आ उसके नेत्रों में झांकते,
और परलोकों की सत्ताएं पास आ वार्तालाप करतीं:
वे सतत जीवी पितर जिन्हें हम मृतक घोषित कर देते हैं
वे जीवन वार्तालाप और मरण से परे की अपनी महिमा त्याग आ जाते
उस प्रज्ञा को उच्चारने जो समस्त सूक्तियों से बढ़कर है:
पाप के सम्राट और पुण्यों के महाराजा,
विवेकबुद्धि न्यायाधीश की गद्दी के सामने आवेदक बने,
अपने-अपने विरोधी सिद्धान्तों की घोषणा करते,
और प्रत्येक स्वयं को ईश्वर का प्रवक्ता समझता:
प्रकाश के सुरदेवताओं और अन्धकार के असुरों में
उसके जीव को पुरस्कार सम अधिकृत करने को युद्ध होने लगा।
In every hour loosed from the quiver of Time
There rose a song of new discovery,
A bow-twang’s hum of young experiment.
त्रिकाल देवता के तरकश से छूटे प्रत्येक घण्टे में
वहां अब एक नवसंधान का गायन होता,
किशोर परीक्षण का एक धनुष्टंकार गुंजित होता।
Each day was a spiritual romance,
As if he was born into a bright new world;
Adventure leaped an unexpected friend,[30]
And danger brought a keen sweet tang of joy:
Each happening was a deep experience.
प्रत्येक दिवस एक आध्यात्मिक प्रणय का होता,
मानों उसका जन्म एक नव-उज्ज्वल जग में हुआ हो;
एक अप्रत्याशित-मित्र सम साहसी कर्म सहसा आ कूदते,
और हर्ष की एक तीखी मीठी कसक ले विपत्ति आती;
प्रत्येक घटना एक गहन अनुभूति होती।
There were high encounters, epic colloquies,
And counsels came couched in celestial speech,
And honeyed pleadings breathed from occult lips
To help the heart to yield to rapture’s call,
And sweet temptations stole from beauty’s realms
And sudden ecstasies from a world of bliss.
वहां पर उच्च भिड़न्ते, महाकाव्य गोष्ठियां होतीं,
और मन्त्रणाएं दिव्य वाचा में सजी आतीं,
गुह्य अधरों से मधु-निवेदन फुसफुसाये जाते
जो आह्लाद के आवाहन पर हृदय को मनाने में सहायक होते,
मोहिनी के साम्राज्य से मधुर लालसाएं चोरी से आ जातीं
और आनन्दघन लोक से हठात् उल्लास को तरंगें ले आतीं।
It was a reign of wonder and delight;
All now his bright clairaudience could receive,
A contact thrilled of mighty unknown things.
यह हर्षसुख और आश्चर्यों का क्षेत्र था।
अब यह सब उसके प्रतिभाशाली अतीन्द्रिय श्रवणशक्ति में प्रवेश पा गया;
शक्तिशाली अज्ञात वस्तुओं से एक सम्पर्क रोमांचित कर जाता था।
Awakened to new unearthly closenesses,
The touch replied to subtle infinities,
And with a silver cry of opening gates
Sight’s lightnings leaped into the invisible.
एक नूतन अलौकिक समीपता के प्रति सचेत हो,
सूक्ष्म नित्यताओं को उसका स्पर्श प्रत्युत्तर देता,
और द्वारों के खुलने की एक रजत-चीत्कार पर
उसके नेत्रों की विद्युती चितवनें अद़ृश्य पर उछल पड़तीं।
Ever his consciousness and vision grew;
They took an ampler sweep, a loftier flight;
He passed the border marked for Matter’s rule
And passed the zone where thought replaces life.
ज्यों ज्यों उसकी चेतना और दूरद़ृष्टि सतत बढ़ने लगे;
वे एक विशालतर घेरा और उच्चतर उडा़न भरने लगे;
वह जड़तत्त्व-विधान की अंकित सीमा के पार निकल गया
और जहां विचार प्राण का स्थान ग्रहण करता है उसे पार कर गया।
Out of this world of signs suddenly he came
Into a silent self where world was not
And looked beyond into a nameless vast.
संकेतों के इस लोक से हटात् वह बाहर निकल पहुंच गया
एक नीरव शान्तात्मा में जहां संसार का अस्तित्व नहीं था
और उसने परात्पर के अनामी विस्तार को देखा।
These symbol figures lost their right to live,
All tokens dropped our sense can recognise;
There the heart beat no more at body’s touch,
There the eyes gazed no more on beauty’s shape.
यहां के प्रतीकों ने वहां जीवित रहने के अपने अधिकार खो दिये थे,
हमारे इन्द्रियबोध द्वारा पहचाने जाते समस्त चिह्न लोप हो गये थे;
वहां पर हृदय अब शरीर के स्पर्श पर और नहीं धड़कता था,
वहां नेत्र मोहिनी रूप को और नहीं घूरते थे।
In rare and lucent intervals of hush
Into a signless region he could soar
Packed with the deep contents of formlessness
Where world was into a single being rapt
And all was known by the light of identity
And spirit was its own self-evidence.
मौन के विरल और चमकते मध्यान्तरों में
एक संकेतहीन क्षेत्र में वह उड़ान भर सकता था
निराकारी तत्त्वों की गहनता में वह पूरी तरह निमग्न था
जहां जगत् एक एकाकी सत्ता में समाहित था
और तदात्मता की ज्योति द्वारा सब ज्ञात होता
और परमात्मतत्त्व स्वयं अपना आत्म-साक्षी था।
The Supreme’s gaze looked out through human eyes
And saw all things and creatures as itself
And knew all thought and word as its own voice.
मानवीय नेत्रों के माध्यम से परमोच्च की द़ृष्टि
सब वस्तुओं और प्राणियों को आत्म रूप सम देखती
और समस्त विचारों और शब्दों में अपनी ही वाणी सुनती।
There unity is too close for search and clasp[31]
And love is a yearning of the One for the One,
And beauty is a sweet difference of the Same
And oneness is the soul of multitude.
वहां एकत्व इतना घनिष्ट है कि खोज और आलिंगन सम्भव नहीं
और एकम् की परमैकम् के लिए लालसा ही वहां प्रेम है,
और एकरूपता का एक आपसी मधुर अन्तर सौन्दर्य है
और बहुलता की अन्तरात्मा ही एकत्व है।
There all the truths unite in a single truth,
And all ideas rejoin Reality.
यहां पर सकल सत्य एक अद्वितीय परम-सत्य में जुडे़ हैं,
और समस्त धारणाएं परम-सत् में पुनः आ मिल एक हो जाती है।
There knowing herself by her own termless self,
Wisdom supernal, wordless, absolute
Sat uncompanioned in the eternal Calm,
All-seeing, motionless, sovereign and alone.
वहां पर प्रज्ञा सर्वोच्च, निःशब्द, परमा,
आत्मभाव में अपनी अकाल आत्मसत्ता को पहिचानती,
निज चिर-शान्ति में एकाकी आसीन थी,
वह सर्वदर्शी, स्थिर परमेश्वरी और अद्वितीया, थी।
There knowledge needs not words to embody Idea;
Idea, seeking a house in boundlessness,
Weary of its homeless immortality,
Asks not in thought’s carved brilliant cell to rest
Whose single window’s clipped outlook on things
Sees only a little arc of God’s vast sky.
वहां ज्ञान को शब्दों की आवश्यकता न होती पराभाव रूपायित करने को;
वरन् पराभव उस असीमता में एक आवास खोजता फिरता
यह अपनी गृहहीन अमरता से क्लान्त था,
विचार के सुगठित उज्ज्वल कक्ष में यह विश्राम नहीं मांगता
क्योकिं उसका एकमात्र गवाक्ष वस्तुओं की पूर्ण द़ृष्टि को काट-छांट देता है
और प्रभु के विशाल गगन का केवल एक लघु घेरामात्र दिखायी देता है।
The boundless with the boundless there consorts;
While there, one can be wider than the world;
While there, one is one’s own infinity.
वहां पर अनन्त के संग अनन्तता ही रमण करती है;
उस स्तर पर तो कोई भी सत्ता संसार से बृहत्तर हो जाती है;
वहां पर तो वह स्वयं अपनी ही अनन्तता बन जाती है।
His centre was no more in earthly mind,
A power of seeing silence filled his limbs:
Caught by a voiceless white epiphany
Into a vision that surpasses forms,
Into a living that surpasses life,
He neared the still consciousness sustaining all.
उसकी चेतना का केन्द्र अब भौतिक मानस में नहीं था,
द्रष्टा नीरवता की एक शक्ति ने अब उसके अंगों को भर दिया था:
एक वाणीहीन शुभ्र भागवत ज्योति ने उसे धारण कर लिया था
आकारों को अतिक्रमण करते एक देवदर्शन में,
प्राण को अतिक्रमण करते अलौकिक जीवन में,
वह उस निश्चल चेतना के सान्निध्य में आ गया जो सर्वधारिणी है।
The voice that only by speech can move the mind
Became a silent knowledge in the soul;
The strength that only in action feels its truth
Was lodged now in a mute omnipotent peace.
वह वाणी जो केवल कथन द्वारा मानस का संचालन करती है
उसकी अन्तरात्मा में एक मौन ज्ञान बन गयी;
उसका ओज जो केवल सक्रियता में अपना यथार्थ अनुभव करता था
अब एक मूक सर्वशक्तिशाली शान्ति में रहने लगा।
A leisure in the labour of the worlds,
A pause in the joy and anguish of the search
Restored the stress of Nature to God’s calm.
संसारी परिश्रम में भी एक विराम आ गया,
संधान के हर्ष और यातना में एक स्थिरता आ गयी
जिसने अपरा प्रकृति के तनाव पर प्रभु की शान्ति स्थापित कर दी।
A vast unanimity ended life’s debate.
एक विराट बन्धुता ने जीवन के वाद-विवाद मिटा दिये।
The war of thoughts that fathers the universe,
The clash of forces struggling to prevail
In the tremendous shock that lights a star
As in the building of a grain of dust,[32]
The grooves that turn their dumb ellipse in space
Ploughed by the seeking of the world’s desire,
The long regurgitations in Time’s flood,
The torment edging the dire force of lust
That wakes kinetic in earth’s dullard slime
And carves a personality out of mud,
The sorrow by which Nature’s hunger is fed,
The oestrus which creates with fire of pain,
The fate that punishes virtue with defeat,
The tragedy that destroys long happiness,
The weeping of Love, the quarrel of the Gods,
Ceased in a truth which lives in its own light.
विचारों के इस युद्ध से इस विश्व का जन्म हुआ है
शक्तियों का टकराव जो स्थापित होने कोसंघर्षरत हैं
और उनके प्रचण्ड आघात से एक तारा प्रज्वलित हो उठता है
वैसे ही जैसे एक धूलि के कण का निर्माण होता है,
वे खांचे जो अपने मूक दीर्घ वृत्तों में आकाश में घूमते हैं
उन्हें विश्व-कामना की अन्धी खोज द्वारा बैल सम जोता जाता है,
त्रिकाल की बाढ़ के प्रवाह प्रवेग का यह दीर्घ प्रत्यावहन है,
वासना की घोर शक्ति का यह दुःखदायी तट-कटाव है
जो पृथ्वी के धूमिल कीचड़ में गति संचालन जगा देता है
और माटी में एक व्यक्तित्व का गठन कर देता है,
वह दु:ख सन्ताप जिससे अपरा-प्रकृति की क्षुधा तृप्त की जाती है,
वह कामोन्माद जो पीड़ा की अग्नि से सर्जन करता है,
वह दुर्भाग्य जो सद़्गुण को पराजय से दण्डित करता है,
वह दारुण दुखान्त नाटक जो दीर्घ सुख को नष्ट कर देता है,
दिव्य प्रेम का यह रोदन, देवताओं का यह संग्राम,
सब एक सत्य दर्शन में-जो आत्म-ज्योति में स्थित है-पहुंच मिट गये।
His soul stood free, a witness and a king.
उसका जीव अब एक साक्षी नृपति सम मुक्त खड़ा था।
Absorbed no more in the moment-ridden flux
Where mind incessantly drifts as on a raft
Hurried from phenomenon to phenomenon,
He abode at rest in indivisible Time.
समय के क्षणिक उतार चढा़व में अब वह और नहीं डूबता था,
जहां पर मन एक तख्ते पर बैठा अविराम बहा करता है
एक द़ृश्यप्रपंच से दूसरे द़ृश्यप्रपंच तक जाने की उतावली में रहता है,
वह तो अब अविभाजित-काल के लोक में शान्त रहता।
As if a story long written but acted now,
In his present he held his future and his past,
Felt in the seconds the uncounted years
And saw the hours like dots upon a page.
जैसे कि एक चिरकाल पहले लिखी कथा अब अभिनीत हो रही हो
जो अपने वर्तमान में अपना अतीत और अपना भविष्य संजोये हो।
कुछ क्षणों में वह अनगिनत वर्षों की अनुभूति पा लेता
और घण्टों को तो पृष्ठ पर लगे बिन्दुओं सम देख लेता।
An aspect of the unknown Reality
Altered the meaning of the cosmic scene.
अज्ञात परम-सत्य के एक पक्ष ने
इस वैश्विक द़ृश्य का अर्थ ही बदल दिया।
This huge material universe became
A small result of a stupendous force:
Overtaking the moment the eternal Ray
Illumined that which never yet was made.
यह विशाल जड़-जगत् बन गया था
एक छोटा-सा फल एक भीषण ऊर्जा का:
अविनाशी दिव्य किरण ने प्रत्येक क्षण पर अधिकार कर
उस तत्-सत् को आलोकित कर दिया जो अभी तक सृष्ट नहीं हुआ था।
Thought lay down in a mighty voicelessness;
The toiling thinker widened and grew still,
Wisdom transcendent touched his quivering heart:
His soul could sail beyond thought’s luminous bar;
Mind screened no more the shoreless infinite.
विचार-संकल्प एक सामर्थ्यशाली निःशब्दता में सो गया,
श्रमरत परम-मनीषी विशालतर हो और स्थिर हो गया,
परात्पर प्रज्ञा ने उसके कम्पायमान हृदय को स्पर्श किया:
उसकी अन्तरात्मा अब विचार की द्युतिमान सीमा के परे यात्रा कर सकती थी;
मन का पर्दा अब तटहीन नित्य को और ढक नहीं सका।
Across a void retreating sky he glimpsed
Through a last glimmer and drift of vanishing stars
The superconscient realms of motionless peace
Where judgment ceases and the word is mute[33]
And the Unconceived lies pathless and alone.
एक रिक्तता के उस पार उसने अपसारित होते नभ को देखा
अन्तिम जगमगाती झलक में और अद़ृश्य होते सितारों के प्रवाह में
अचल परम-शान्ति के ये पराचेतन के राज्य थे
जहां विवेक मिट जाता है और शब्द मूक हो जाते हैं
और वह अगम्य परमेश पथहीन है एवं एकाकी है।
There came not form or any mounting voice;
There only were Silence and the Absolute.
वहां किसी आकार या वाणी का आरोहण नहीं हो सकता;
वहां केवल अनन्त नीरवता और परम तत्त्व ब्रह्म था।
Out of that stillness mind new-born arose
And woke to truths once inexpressible,
And forms appeared, dumbly significant,
A seeing thought, a self-revealing voice.
उस स्थिरता से उसका मन नव-जन्म धारण कर उठ आया
और कभी जो वर्णन से परे सत्य थे उनकीओर जाग गया,
और ऐसे आकार व्यक्त हुए जो मूक और महत्त्व के थे,
एक द्रष्टा विचार, एक आत्म-ज्योतित वाचा प्रकटी।
He knew the source from which his spirit came:
Movement was married to the immobile Vast;
He plunged his roots into the Infinite,
He based his life upon Eternity.
वह अपनी अन्तरात्मा के उद़्गम उस आदि स्रोत का ज्ञान पा गया:
यह सकल गति संचालन उस अचल विराट् से जुडा़ है;
उसने अपनी जड़ें उस चरम अनन्तता में निमज्जित कर दीं,
और अपने जीवन की आधारशिला नित्यता पर धर ली।
Only a while at first these heavenlier states,
These large wide-poised upliftings could endure.
आरम्भ में ये स्वर्गिक स्थितियां केवल कुछ समय ही रहती हैं,
ये महान् विस्तृत-सन्तुलित उत्थान हम कुछ देर ही सह सकते हैं।
The high and luminous tension breaks too soon,
The body’s stone stillness and the life’s hushed trance,
The breathless might and calm of silent mind;
Or slowly they fail as sets a golden day.
यह उच्च और तेजोमय दबाव अति शीघ्र भंग हो जाता है,
इस देह की पाषाणी स्थिरता और इस प्राण कीमौन समाधि,
यह श्वासहीनशक्ति और नीरव मन की शान्ति;
ये एक स्वर्णदिवस सम शनै: शनै: असफल हो अस्त हो जाती हैं।
The restless nether members tire of peace;
A nostalgia of old little works and joys,
A need to call back small familiar selves,
To tread the accustomed and inferior way,
The need to rest in a natural poise of fall,
As a child who learns to walk can walk not long,
Replace the titan will for ever to climb,
On the heart’s altar dim the sacred fire.
ये अस्थिर अधो-अंगसब शान्ति से थक जाते हैं;
लघु क्षुद्र कार्यों का हर्ष और उनसे विलग होने पर व्याकुलता,
तुच्छ परिचित व्यक्तित्वों को पुनः टेरने की आवश्यकता,
अभ्यस्त और निम्नतर पथ पर विचरण का आकर्षण,
मानों पतन की स्थिति एक स्वाभाविक विश्राम की अनिवार्यता हो,
एक शिशु समान जो नया चलना सीखने पर अधिक नहीं चल पाता हो,
यह सतत आरोहण के घोर संकल्प का स्थान ले लेता है,
हृदय वेदी पर जलती पावन अग्नि को मन्द कर देता है।
An old pull of subconscious cords renews;
It draws the unwilling spirit from the heights,
Or a dull gravitation drags us down
To the blind driven inertia of our base.
अवचेतन तन्तुओं का एक पुराना आकर्षण नया हो खींचता है;
अनिच्छुक आत्म-पुरुष को उच्चताओं से नीचे ले आता है,
अथवा एक जड़ गुरुत्वाकर्षण हमें घसीट लेता है
हमारे मूलाधार के इस अंध-अज्ञता से संचालित तमस् में।
This too the supreme Diplomat can use,
He makes our fall a means for greater rise.
किन्तु सर्वेश्वर कौटिल्यप्रभु इसका भी उपयोग कर लेता है,
वह हमारे पतन को महत्तर उन्नति का एक साधन बना देता है।
For into the ignorant nature’s gusty field,
Into the half-ordered chaos of mortal life
The formless Power, the Self of eternal light
Follow in the shadow of the spirit’s descent;[34]
The twin duality for ever one
Chooses its home mid the tumults of the sense.
क्योंकि अपरा प्रकृति के इस भावावेगी उमंग के क्षेत्र में,
अर्ध-व्यवस्थित मर्त्य-जीवन की इस अस्त-व्यस्तता में
वह निराकारी महाशक्ति, अनन्त-प्रकाश की परमेश्वरी
इस आत्मा के अवतरण की छाया में सदैव पीछे-पीछे चलती है;
ये जुड़वां द्वित्व है जो सदैव एक है
यह अपना घर इस इन्द्रिय के हंगामें में चुनता है।
He comes unseen into our darker parts
And, curtained by the darkness, does his work,
A subtle and all-knowing guest and guide,
Till they too feel the need and will to change.
वह अगोचर हमारे अन्धकारमय भागों में आता है
और, अन्धकार के पट के पीछे छिपा, निज कार्य करता है,
यह सूक्ष्म और सर्वज्ञाता अतिथि एवं पथ-प्रदर्शक बन रहता,
जब तक वे भी रूपान्तर की आवश्यकता और इच्छा अनुभव नहीं करते।
All here must learn to obey a higher law,
Our body’s cells must hold the Immortal’s flame.
यहां पर सबको एक उच्चतर विधान का अनुपालन सीखना है,
हमारे शरीर के कोषों को अमरता की अग्नि धारण करनी है।
Else would the spirit reach alone its source
Leaving a half-saved world to its dubious fate.
अन्यथा यह जीवात्मा एकाकी अपने स्रोत में जा मिल जायेगी
एक अर्ध-सुरक्षित जगती को अपनी संदिग्ध नियति पर छोड़ जायेगी।
Nature would ever labour unredeemed;
Our earth would ever spin unhelped in space,
And this immense creation’s purpose fail
Till at last the frustrate universe sank undone.
प्रकृति-देवी आशा त्याग अपने कठिन श्रम में जुटी रहेगी;
हमारी पृथ्वी असहाय बनी अन्तरिक्ष में सतत घूमती रहेगी,
और इस विशाल सृष्टि का उद्देश्य असफल, निरर्थक हो जायेगा
अन्त में तब यह कुण्ठित विश्व बिखर जायेगा।
Even his godlike strength to rise must fall:
His greater consciousness withdrew behind;
Dim and eclipsed, his human outside strove
To feel again the old sublimities,
Bring the high saving touch, the ethereal flame,
Call back to its dire need the divine Force.
वैसे ही नृप के देवतुल्य बल को भी उत्थान हित गिरना पड़ा:
उसकी महत्तर चेतना ने पीछे हटकर अवकाश ग्रहण कर लिया;
धूमिल और ग्रसित-सी उसकी मानवीय सत्ता बाहर श्रम में लग गयी
उन पुरानी दिव्यताओं की अनुभूति पुन: पाने को,
अलौकिक शिखा का दिव्य सुरक्षाकारी स्पर्श लौटा लाने को,
उस दिव्य महाशक्ति को अपनी घोर आवश्यकता सम पुनः बुला लाने को।
Always the power poured back like sudden rain,
Or slowly in his breast a presence grew;
It clambered back to some remembered height
Or soared above the peak from which it fell.
परमा-शक्ति भी हठात् एक मेह समान आकर सदैव बरस जाती,
या उसके अन्तर में धीरे-धीरे एक सान्निध्य बन विकसित हो उठती;
तब यह पुनः किन्हीं स्मरणीय शिखरों पर चढ़ जाता
यह उस शिखर के ऊर्ध्व में, जहां से गिरा था, उडा़न भरता।
Each time he rose there was a larger poise,
A dwelling on a higher spirit plane;
The Light remained in him a longer space.
In this oscillation between earth and heaven,
In this ineffable communion’s climb
There grew in him as grows a waxing moon
The glory of the integer of his soul.
प्रत्येक बार वह एक उच्चतर स्थिति में उठ जाता,
एक महत्तर आत्म-स्तर पर एक घर बना लेता
दिव्य प्रकाश अब उसमें एक दीर्घतर अवधि तक स्थिर रहता;
धरती और स्वर्ग के मध्य इस उत्थान-पतन के झूले में
इस अनिर्वचनीय सम्पर्क के आरोहण में
उसकी आत्मा की अखण्ड पूर्णता की महिमा उसके अन्तर में
ऐसे विकसित होने लगी जैसे गगन में चन्द्रकला बढ़ती है।
A union of the Real with the unique,
A gaze of the Alone from every face,
The Presence of the Eternal in the hours
Widening the mortal mind’s half-look on things,
Bridging the gap between man’s force and Fate[35]
Made whole the fragment-being we are here.
परम-सत् का यह एक अद्वितीय मिलन था,
उसे प्रत्येक मुखड़े पर परमैकम् का एक दर्शन होता,
इन नश्वर घण्टों में उस अविनाशी की परमा-उपस्थिति ने
इस मानव-मन की वस्तुओं को देखने की अधूरी द़ृष्टि को विस्तृत कर दिया,
मानव की शक्ति और दैवी नियति के मध्य गर्त पर सेतुबना दिया
इस भौतिक जग में हमारी बिखरी खण्डित सत्ता को पूर्ण बना दिया।
At last was won a firm spiritual poise,
A constant lodging in the Eternal’s realm,
A safety in the Silence and the Ray,
A settlement in the Immutable.
अन्त में एक स्थिर द़ृढ़ आध्यात्मिक आसन उसने प्राप्त कर लिया,
अमर शाश्वत के साम्राज्य में एक अविराम निवास पा गया,
आत्म-नीरवता और परम-ज्योति की एक सुरक्षा में,
अविकारी परमेश्वर में एक आवास बना लिया।
His heights of being lived in the still Self ;
His mind could rest on a supernal ground
And look down on the magic and the play
Where the God-child lies on the lap of Night and Dawn
And the Everlasting puts on Time’s disguise.
उसकी सत्ता के शिखर अब द़ृढ़ स्थिर पत्मात्म-तत्त्व में रहते;
उसका मानस एक दिव्य क्षेत्र पर विश्राम करता
और जग-माया और लीला का खेल धरती पर अवलोकता
जहां पर प्रभु का बालरूप विश्व-रात्रि और दिवा की गोद में पालित लेटा है
और जहां चिरन्तन प्रभु काल का छद्मवेश धर विचरता है।
To the still heights and to the troubled depths
His equal spirit gave its vast assent:
A poised serenity of tranquil strength,
A wide unshaken look on Time’s unrest
Faced all experience with unaltered peace.
उसी की समत्व भाव आत्मा ने अपनी उदारता में स्वीकारा है
इन अचल उच्चताओं को एवं इन व्यथित गर्तों को:
शान्त-शक्ति का वह एक संतुलित धीरवीर था,
जो त्रिकालीय अशान्ति पर एक विशाल अविचल द़ृष्टि डालता
और समस्त अनुभवों का सामना अविकारी शान्ति से करता।
Indifferent to the sorrow and delight,
Untempted by the marvel and the call,
Immobile it beheld the flux of things,
Calm and apart supported all that is:
His spirit’s stillness helped the toiling world.
वह शोक और हर्ष के प्रति उदासीन,
आश्चर्य और निमन्त्रण से प्रलोभन में न पड़ता,
पृथक् और शान्त रह सकल भूत जगत् को सहारा देता,
अचल स्थिर भाव से वस्तुओं का प्रवाह अवलोकता:
उसकी आत्मा की स्थिरता इस श्रमरत संसार की सहायता करती।
Inspired by silence and the closed eyes’ sight
His force could work with a new luminous art
On the crude material from which all is made
And the refusal of Inertia’s mass
And the grey front of the world’s Ignorance
And nescient Matter and the huge error of life.
नीरवता में और बन्द नेत्रों की द़ृष्टि से प्रेरणा प्राप्त कर
उसकी ऊर्जा अब एक नूतन प्रकाशमय शिल्प द्वारा कार्य करती
इस अर्धपरिपक्व द्रव्य पर जिससे यह समष्टि रचित है,
और घोर तमोगुणी इस स्थूल पुंज की अस्वीकृति पर
इस संसार की अविद्या के कलुषित अग्रभाग पर
और निश्चेतन जड़तत्त्व पर और जीवन की इस विशाल भूल पर कार्यरत है।
As a sculptor chisels a deity out of stone
He slowly chipped off the dark envelope,
Line of defence of Nature’s ignorance,
The illusion and mystery of the Inconscient
In whose black pall the Eternal wraps his head
That he may act unknown in cosmic Time.
जैसे कोई शिल्पी एक जड़-पाषाण से देवी प्रतिमा काट निकाल लेता है,
उसने धीरे-धीरे उस काले आवरण को काट फेंका,
यही अपरा-प्रकृति के अज्ञान की सुरक्षा रेखा है,
इस घोर अचित् का मायाजाल और रहस्य है
जिसके काले लबादे में चिरन्तन ने अपने को लपेट लिया है
जिससे वह अज्ञात इस वैश्विक दिक्काल में कार्य कर सके।
A splendour of self-creation from the peaks,
A transfiguration in the mystic depths,
A happier cosmic working could begin
And fashion the world-shape in him anew,[36]
God found in Nature, Nature fulfilled in God.
स्वयं-भू की एक शोभा उच्च शिखरों से अवतरित हुई,
इन गुह्य गर्तों में एक रूपान्तरण करने,
जिससे एक प्रसन्नतर वैश्व प्रक्रिया आरम्भ हो सकी
और उसके अन्तर में एक नव जग का रूपायण हो सका,
प्रभु स्वयं इस विश्व-प्रकृति में समाया है, प्रभु में विश्व-प्रकृति परिपूर्णता पाती है।
Already in him was seen that task of Power:
Life made its home on the high tops of self;
His soul, mind, heart became a single sun;
Only life’s lower reaches remained dim.
नृप के अन्तर में महाशक्ति का यह श्रम सिद्ध होता दिख रहा था:
उसके प्राण ने आत्म चेतना के उन्नत शिखरों पर घर बसा लिया;
उसका जीव, मन, ह्रदय सब एक अद्वितीय प्रकाश से भर गये;
केवल जीवन के निम्नतर अधोभाग अभी धूमिल अन्धकारमय थे।
But there too, in the uncertain shadow of life,
There was a labour and a fiery breath;
The ambiguous cowled celestial puissance worked
Watched by the inner Witness’s moveless peace.
किन्तु वहां पर भी, जीवन की अनिश्चित छाया में,
कठोर श्रम का प्रयास था और एक प्रचण्ड श्वास था;
अस्पष्ट गोपित दिव्य महाशक्ति वहां कार्यरत थी
अन्तर के आत्मसाक्षी की अचल शान्ति उसका निरीक्षण करती।
Even on the struggling Nature left below
Strong periods of illumination came:
Lightnings of glory after glory burned,
Experience was a tale of blaze and fire,
Air rippled round the argosies of the Gods,
Strange riches sailed to him from the Unseen;
Splendours of insight filled the blank of thought,
Knowledge spoke to the inconscient stillnesses,
Rivers poured down of bliss and luminous force,
Visits of beauty, storm-sweeps of delight
Rained from the all-powerful Mystery above.
इस संघर्षरत अपरा अधोगामी प्रकृति पर भी
शक्तिशाली प्रकाश कीघड़ियां हठात् अवतरित हो जातीं;
भव्यता और यशस्विता कीबिजलियां प्रज्वलित हो उठतीं,
अनुभव ज्वाला और अग्नि के तेज से पूर्ण एक कथा बन जाता,
देवताओं के जलपोतों के चहुं ओर वायु लहराती सरसराती,
उस अगोचर प्रभु से विचित्र सम्पदाएं तैरती चली आतीं;
अन्तर्द़ृष्टि की छटाओं ने उसके मन के रीते-पन को भर दिया,
अचित् की अचलताओं में ज्ञान मुखरित हो उठा,
आनन्द तथा ज्योति-ऊर्जा की सरिताएं नीचे बह निकलीं,
सौन्दर्य मोहकताओं का आगमन होता, आनन्द की आंधियां चलतीं
सर्व-तेजस्वी शक्तिशाली परम गुह्यता के मेह ऊर्ध्व से बरसने लगे।
Thence stooped the eagles of Omniscience.
A dense veil was rent, a mighty whisper heard;
Repeated in the privacy of his soul,
A wisdom-cry from rapt transcendences
Sang on the mountains of an unseen world;
The voices that an inner listening hears
Conveyed to him their prophet utterances,
And flame-wrapt outbursts of the immortal Word
And flashes of an occult revealing Light
Approached him from the unreachable secrecy.
तब हटात् सर्वज्ञता-देवी की चीलों ने झपट्टा मारा
एक सघन पट छिन्न-भिन्न हो गया, एक सामर्थ्यपूर्ण फुसफुसाहट सुनायी दी;
उसके अन्तर पुरुष की अन्तरंगता में यह दोहरायी गयी,
तल्लीन परात्परताओं से एक प्रज्ञा-घोष उठा
इसे एक अद़ृश्य लोक के पर्वतों पर गाया गया;
इन वाचाओं को एक अन्तर श्रवण ही सुनता है
इसने उनकी भविष्यवाणियों को राजा तक पहुंचा दिया,
अमर-परावाणी के तेजस्विता में लिपटे विस्फोटन
और एक गुह्यआत्म-ज्योतित दिव्य प्रकाश की बिजलियां
उस तक एक अगम्य दिव्य गोपनीयता से पहुंच जातीं।
An inspired Knowledge sat enthroned within
Whose seconds illumined more than reason’s years:
An ictus of revealing lustre fell
As if a pointing accent upon Truth,
And like a sky-flare showing all the ground
A swift intuitive discernment shone.[37]
एक प्रेरक सत्य-ज्ञान अन्तर में हृदय-सिंहासन पर आसीन है
जिसके पल मात्र भी वर्षों के विवेक और बौद्धिक ज्ञान से अधिक प्रकाश देते:
आत्म-दर्शन की कान्ति का एक अग्नि पुंज गिरा
मानों परम सत्य के आरोहण कीओर इंगित करता हो,
और गगन में क्षेपित एक ज्वाला सम समस्त क्षेत्र को दर्शा दिया
एक तात्कालिक अन्तर्प्रेरणा का विवेक उसमें जाग उठा।
One glance could separate the true and false,
Or raise its rapid torch-fire in the dark
To check the claimants crowding through mind’s gates
Covered by the forged signatures of the gods,
Detect the magic bride in her disguise
Or scan the apparent face of thought and life.
एक ही चितवन में वह सत्य और मिथ्या को पृथक् कर सकता था,
या अन्धकार को काटती अपनीतात्कालिक मशाल उठा लेता
और मन के द्वारों पर भीड़ लगाये दावेदारों का निरीक्षण करता
जो देवों के जाली हस्ताक्षरों के पीछे स्वयं को छिपा लेते,
यह छद्मवेश में छिपी मायावी वधू को पहिचान लेता
या विचार और जीवन के ऊपरी दिखावे के पीछे छिपे यथार्थ को जान लेता।
Oft inspiration with her lightning feet,
A sudden messenger from the all-seeing tops,
Traversed the soundless corridors of his mind
Bringing her rhythmic sense of hidden things.
प्रायः अपने विद्युती चरणों से आ अन्तःप्रेरणा चमक जाती,
यह सर्वद्रष्टा शिखरों से उतरी एक आकस्मिक सन्देशवाहिका
उसके मन के निस्तब्ध गलियारों के घुमावों को पार कर
गुह्य तत्त्वों से अपना सुसामञ्जस्य का संगीत बोध ले आती।
A music spoke transcending mortal speech.
एक संगीत मर्त्यवाचा को उन्नत करता गूंज उठा।
As if from a golden phial of the All-Bliss,
A joy of light, a joy of sudden sight,
A rapture of the thrilled undying Word
Poured into his heart as into an empty cup,
A repetition of God’s first delight
Creating in a young and virgin Time.
जैसे कि परमानन्द के एक स्वर्ण-सुराचषक से-
एक ज्योतिर्मय हर्ष, एक हठात् देव-दर्शन का सुख,
स्पन्दित अमर आदिशब्द का एक आह्लाद
उसके हृदयरूपी रीते प्याले में उडे़ल दिया हो,
प्रभु की प्रथम भाव समाधि की यह पुनरावृत्ति
आदिकाल के एक बाल कौमार्य युग में रची गयी थी।
In a brief moment caught, a little space,
All-Knowledge packed into great wordless thoughts
Lodged in the expectant stillness of his depths
A crystal of the ultimate Absolute,
A portion of the inexpressible Truth
Revealed by silence to the silent soul.
The intense creatrix in his stillness wrought;
Her power fallen speechless grew more intimate;
She looked upon the seen and the unforeseen,
Unguessed domains she made her native field.
एक अल्प क्षण में, एक लघु-आकाश में,
समस्त ज्ञान को महान्शब्दहीन विचारों में भर बांध दिया
और उसकी गहराइयों की प्रत्याशी नीरवता में धर दिया-
पूर्ण परम तत्त्व के एक निर्मल स्फटिक सम,
वर्णन से परे के अमर-सत्य का एक अंश
मौन द्वारा उसकी शान्त अन्तरात्मा में उदित हो उठा
जिसे उसकी स्थिर शान्ति में गम्भीर सृष्टिकर्त्री ने गढा़ था;
अब उस देवी कीशक्ति अवाक् हो उससे एकात्म हो गयी थी;
वह द़ृश्य और अद़ृश्य-भावी दोनों की निरीक्षिका देवी
इसने योगी के अन्तर में अकल्पित क्षेत्रों को अपना सहज धाम बना लिया।
All-vision gathered into a single ray,
As when the eyes stare at an invisible point
Till through the intensity of one luminous spot
An apocalypse of a world of images
Enters into the kingdom of the seer.
सकल देव-दर्शन अब एक अकेली किरण में एकत्रित थे,
यथा त्राटक में जब नयन एक अद़ृश्य बिन्दु को घूरते हैं
जब तक उस एक बिन्दु की दीप्ति की तीव्रता के कारण
प्रतिबिम्बों के एक जगत् का गुह्य ज्योतिर्मय-ग्रन्थ
उस योगी द्रष्टा के साम्राज्य में प्रवेश नहीं कर जाता।
A great nude arm of splendour suddenly rose;
It rent the gauze opaque of Nescience:
Her lifted finger’s keen unthinkable tip[38]
Bared with a stab of flame the closed Beyond.
हठात् महिमा की एक विशाल नग्न भुजा उठी
जिसने निश्चेतना की मूढ़ सघन जाली फाड़ डाली:
देवी के उठे हाथ की अंगुली की तीक्ष्ण अकल्पित नोक ने
एक ज्वाला सम आघात से पट चीर बन्द परात्परता को प्रकटा दिया।
An eye awake in voiceless heights of trance,
A mind plucking at the unimaginable,
Overleaping with a sole and perilous bound
The high black wall hiding superconscience,
She broke in with inspired speech for scythe
And plundered the Unknowable’s vast estate.
समाधि की वाचाहीन उच्चताओं पर एक नेत्र खुल गया
एक मनश्शक्ति उस कल्पनातीत को तोड़,
एक एकाकी और विपत्तिभरी छलांग लगा
उस ऊंची काली दीवार को पार कर गयी जो पराचेतना को छिपा रखती है,
वह प्रेरक वाणी को हंसिया सम साथ लेकर अन्तर में पैठ गयी
और अज्ञेय प्रभु की विशाल सम्पदाओं को लूट लिया।
A gleaner of infinitesimal grains of Truth,
A sheaf-binder of infinite experience,
She pierced the guarded mysteries of World-Force
And her magic methods wrapt in a thousand veils;
Or she gathered the lost secrets dropped by Time
In the dust and crannies of his mounting route
Mid old forsaken dreams of hastening Mind
And buried remnants of forgotten space.
ऋत के सूक्ष्म अणुकणों को एकत्रित कर गांठ में बांध,
अनन्त अनुभव को संग्रह कर संभाल रख लिया,
उसने विश्व कीदैवीशक्ति के सुरक्षित रहस्यों को वेध डाला
और उसकी सहस्र पटों में लिपटी मायावी विधियों को खोल दिया,
त्रिकाल द्वारा गिरे उन खोये रहस्यों को एकत्र कर लिया
जो उसके आरोहण-मार्ग की मिट्टी और दरारों में छूट गये थे
विश्व-मानस द्वारा उतावली की शीघ्रता में पुराने स्वप्नों के मध्य
विस्मृत दिशा के अवशेषों में दबे पड़े रह गये थे।
A traveller between summit and abyss
She joined the distant ends, the viewless deeps,
Or streaked along the roads of Heaven and Hell
Pursuing all knowledge like a questing hound.
यह मनश्शक्ति उच्चता और गर्त के मध्य की एक यात्री
दो सुदूर के तटों को जोड़ती है द़ृष्टि से परे की गहनताओं को,
अथवा स्वर्ग और नरक के मार्गों पर तीव्रगति से दौड़ती
सकल ज्ञान का पीछा एक शिकारी श्वान-सम करती है।
A reporter and scribe of hidden wisdom talk,
Her shining minutes of celestial speech,
Passed through the masked office of the occult mind,
Transmitting gave to prophet and to seer
The inspired body of the mystic Truth.
A recorder of the inquiry of the gods,
Spokesman of the silent seeings of the Supreme,
She brought immortal words to mortal men.
गुप्त प्रज्ञावार्ता की एक संवादिका और लिपिका है,
स्वर्गिक भाषण के उसके चमकते विवरण,
गुह्यमानस के छद्मवेषी कार्यालय से सहज निकल जाते हैं,
यह संचरण ऋषिद्रष्टा एवं मनीषी-संत को प्रेषित कर देता है
गुह्य परम-सत्य की अनुप्रेरित काया को
जो देवताओं की जांच पड़ताल की एक लिपिका है,
परमेश्वर के मूक द़ृश्यों की वक्ता है,
वह अमर वाचाओं को मर्त्य मानव हित उतार लाती है।
Above the reason’s brilliant slender curve,
Released like radiant air dimming a moon,
Broad spaces of a vision without line
Or limit swam into his spirit’s ken.
विवेक बुद्धि के प्रतिभाशाली कोमल झुकाव के ऊर्ध्व में,
चन्द्रमा को धूमिल करता दीप्तिमय वातावरण में मुक्त छोडा़ गया,
विस्तृत दिशाओं का एक सीमाहीन दर्शन था
जो उसकी आत्मा के द़ृष्टि-क्षेत्र में तैरता दिखायी दे जाता।
Oceans of being met his voyaging soul
Calling to infinite discovery;
Timeless domains of joy and absolute power
Stretched out surrounded by the eternal hush;
The ways that lead to endless happiness[39]
Ran like dream-smiles through meditating vasts:
Disclosed stood up in a gold moment’s blaze
White sun-steppes in the pathless Infinite.
स्रत्ता के महासिन्धु उसकी विचरती आत्मा को आ भेंटते
अविनाशी नित्यता का संधान करने को टेरते;
अकाल-हर्ष के क्षेत्र और सम्पूर्ण-बल के प्रदेश
चिरन्तन मौन से घिरे चहुं ओर फैले थे;
अनन्त प्रसन्नता की ओर जाते मार्ग थे
जो ध्यानमग्न विस्तारों के मध्य मधुर सपनों सम दौड़ते:
अनन्त पथविहीन नित्यता में शुभ्र-धूप उज्ज्वल हरित मैदान
एक स्वर्ण-पल की आभा में अन्तर-द़ृष्टि के सन्मुख व्यक्त हो उठते।
Along a naked curve in bourneless Self
The points that run through the closed heart of things
Shadowed the indeterminable line
That carries the Everlasting through the years.
असीम-परमात्म-तत्त्व में एक नग्न रेखा के घुमाव के साथ
ऐसे केन्द्र बिन्दु थे जो वस्तुओं के बन्द अन्तरों के मध्य से दौड़ते
उस अनिश्चित रेखा पर छाया डाल धुंधला कर देते लगते
जो चिरन्तन प्रभु को अपने अन्तर में युगों से धारण किये चलती है।
The magician order of the cosmic Mind
Coercing the freedom of infinity
With the stark array of Nature’s symbol facts
And life’s incessant signals of event,
Transmuted chance recurrences into laws,
A chaos of signs into a universe.
वैश्विक मनशक्ति का यह माया का विधान
जिसने नित्य की स्वतन्त्रता को बांध दिया लगता है
विश्व-प्रकृति के प्रतीक सत्यों की इस कठोर सूची से,
और जीवन में सतत घटित संकेतों से,
संचारित दैवयोग की घटनाओं को विधान बना दिया है,
संकेतों की अन्धव्यवस्था को एक विश्व में बदल दिया है।
Out of the rich wonders and the intricate whorls
Of the spirit’s dance with Matter as its mask
The balance of the world’s design grew clear,
Its symmetry of self-arranged effects
Managed in the deep perspectives of the soul,
And the realism of its illusive art,
Its logic of infinite intelligence,
Its magic of a changing eternity.
जड़तत्त्व को अपने मुखौटे सम पहने अन्तरात्मा के नृत्य में
जटिल घुमाव के चक्करों और समृद्ध अनुभूति के चमत्कारों में से
उसे इस संसार-योजना का नक्शा और सन्तुलन अब स्पष्ट दिखने लगा,
इसकी आत्म-व्यवस्थित परिणामों कीसुडौलता
जिसे आत्मा के गहन परिप्रेक्ष्यों में व्यवस्थित किया है,
और इसकी मायावी शिल्प का यथार्थ रूपायण,
अनन्त बौद्धिकता का इसका तर्क एवं वाद-विवाद,
एक विकारी शाश्वतता का इसका जादू-सब अन्तरात्मा से व्यवस्थित है।
A glimpse was caught of things for ever unknown ;
The letters stood out of the unmoving Word.
राजा को सदा से अज्ञात पदार्थों की एक झलक प्राप्त हो गयी;
अचल परम-शब्द के अक्षर स्पष्ट दिखायी देने लगे।
In the immutable nameless Origin
Was seen emerging as from fathomless seas
The trail of the Ideas that made the world,
And, sown in the black earth of Nature’s trance,
The seed of the Spirit’s blind and huge desire
From which the tree of cosmos was conceived
And spread its magic arms through a dream of space.
उस अविकारी अनामी आदि आरम्भ तत्त्व से उदित होती
मानो अगाध सागर से निकलती हो, ऐसे दिखायी दी
विज्ञानमय विभावों की एक श्रृंखला जिसने इस संसार की सृष्टि की,
और, प्रकृति देवी की समाधि में काली धरा पर बो दिया गया
परमात्मतत्त्व की अन्धी और कामना के बीज को
जिससे ब्रह्माण्ड का वृक्ष उत्पन्न हुआ
और इसने इस स्वप्नाकाश के मध्य अपनी मायावी शाखाएं फैला दीं।
Immense realities took on a shape:
There looked out from the shadow of the Unknown
The bodiless Namelessness that saw God born
And tries to gain from the mortal’s mind and soul
A deathless body and a divine name.
विशाल वास्तविकताओं ने एक आकार धर लिया:
उस अज्ञेय ब्रह्म की छाया से तब वहां बाहर झांकी
एक निराकारी नामहीनता जिसने प्रभु को जन्म लेते देखा
और इस नश्वर मानव के मानस और अन्तरात्मा में उसे प्रयास करते पाया
एक अमरदेह और दिव्यनाम यहां सिद्ध कर लेने को।
The immobile lips, the great surreal wings,[40]
The visage masked by superconscient Sleep,
The eyes with their closed lids that see all things,
Appeared of the Architect who builds in trance.
वे द़ृढ़ अचल अधर, महती अतिवास्तविक पंख,
परा विशुद्ध सचेत सुषुप्ति द्वारा प्रच्छन्न मुखमण्डल,
अपनी मुंदी पलकों से निहारते सर्वद्रष्टा विश्वकर्मा के नेत्र
उसके सम्मुख साक्षात् हो गये, यही दिव्यशिल्पी ध्यानस्थ हो सर्जन करता है।
The original Desire born in the Void
Peered out; he saw the hope that never sleeps,
The feet that run behind a fleeting fate,
The ineffable meaning of the endless dream.
शून्य विराट् से जन्मे आदि कामदेव ने बाहर झांका;
राजा ने उस आशा को देखा जो कभी नहीं सोती है,
उन चरणों को जो एक उड़ते भाग्य के पीछे सतत दौड़ते हैं
इस अन्तहीन स्वप्न का वह अनिर्वचनीय अर्थ जान गया।
As if a torch held by a power of God,
The radiant world of the everlasting Truth
Glimmered like a faint star bordering the night
Above the golden Overmind’s shimmering ridge.
अति कठिनाई से मात्र पल भर के लिए मनःशक्ति ने अद़ृश्य-द़ृश्यहीन की झलक पायी,
मानों प्रभु की एक शक्ति द्वारा धारित मशाल ने व्यक्त कर दी,
चिरन्तन परम-सत्य की वह दीप्तीमयी जगती
जो स्वर्णिम अतिमानस के जगमगाते शिखर के ऊर्ध्व में
रात्रि की क्षितिज-सीमा पर एक मन्द तारे सम तनिक झिलमिलायी।
Even were caught as through a cunning veil
The smile of love that sanctions the long game,
The calm indulgence and maternal breasts
Of Wisdom suckling the child-laughter of Chance,
Silence the nurse of the Almighty’s power,
The omniscient hush, womb of the immortal Word,
And of the Timeless the still brooding face,
And the creative eye of Eternity.
यहांतक कि एक छद्म घूंघट के मध्य पकड़ी गयी थी
प्रेम की वह स्मिति जो इस सृष्टि की दीर्घलीला की अनुमंता है,
उसने समत्व का शान्तिपूर्ण दुलार और प्रज्ञावती मां भगवती के स्तनों से
दूध पीते दैवयोग की बाल-हास्य की माधुरी को देखा,
परम सर्वशक्तिशाली ऊर्जा की धाय चरम नीरवता को,
स्रर्वज्ञानी मौन को, अमर आदिशब्द के गर्भाशय को,
और उस अकाल पुरुष के समाधिमग्न शान्त मुखमण्डल को
तथा आदि सनातन पुरुष के सर्जनशील नेत्र की झलक पायी।
The inspiring goddess entered a mortal’s breast,
Made there her study of divining thought
And sanctuary of prophetic speech
And sat upon the tripod seat of mind:
All was made wide above, all lit below.
वह प्रेरणाप्रद देवी एक मर्त्य अन्तर में प्रवेश कर गयी
वहां देवी ने भविष्य के दिव्य संकल्प का अध्ययन कक्ष बना लिया
और यह भावी दैव-वाणी हित एक विश्राम स्थल हो गया,
और दैवी मन के त्रिगुणी आसन पर विराजमान हो गयी:
ऊर्ध्व में सब विस्तृत और नीचे सब प्रकाशमान हो उठा।
In darkness’ core she dug out wells of light,
On the undiscovered depths imposed a form,
Lent a vibrant cry to the unuttered vasts,
And through great shoreless, voiceless, starless breadths
Bore earthward fragments of revealing thought
Hewn from the silence of the Ineffable.
अन्धकार के मर्मेस्थल में उसने प्रकाश के कूपों को खोद डाला,
अशोधित गहनताओं पर एक आकार आरोपित कर दिया,
अनुच्चारित विस्तारों को एक स्पन्दित पुकार उधार दे दी,
और उन तटहीन, वाणीहीन, ताराहीन विस्तृतताओं के मध्य से
सचेत प्रकाशमान दिव्य संकल्प के अंशों को पृथ्वी कीओर पठा दिया
जिन्हें अनिर्वचनीय प्रभु की नीरवता से तराशा गया था।
A voice in the heart uttered the unspoken Name,
A dream of seeking thought wandering through space
Entered the invisible and forbidden house:
The treasure was found of a supernal Day.
हृदय में दैवी वाचा ने उच्चारा अनुच्चारित दिव्य-नाम को,
जिज्ञासु संकल्प का एक सपना आकाश में भटकता फिरता था
अब यह उसके अद़ृश्य और निषेधित गृह में प्रवेश कर गया:
एक अलौकिक परा-दिवस का संचित खजाना मिल गया।
In the deep subconscient glowed her jewel-lamp;
Lifted, it showed the riches of the Cave[41]
Where, by the miser traffickers of sense
Unused, guarded beneath Night’s dragon paws,
In folds of velvet darkness draped they sleep
Whose priceless value could have saved the world.
उस गहन अवचेतन में देवी का हीरक प्रदीप जल उठा;
जिसकी बाती ने उठकर, उस आत्म कंदरा के वैभवों को दर्शा दिया
जिन्हें इन्द्रिय बोध का कृपण व्यापारी वहां पर छिपाकर,
तमस्-रात्रि के विकराल पशु पंजों के नीचे दबाकर,
अप्रयुक्त, अन्धकार की मखमली परतों में लपेट सुरक्षित रख सोते हैं
जिनकी अनमोल कीमत इस संसार को बचा सुरक्षित रख सकती है।
A darkness carrying morning in its breast
Looked for the eternal wide returning gleam,
Waiting the advent of a larger ray
And rescue of the lost herds of the Sun.
एक काली निशा अपने वक्षस्थल में उषा धारण कर चल रही है
उसने नित्य सनातन के विशाल लौटते प्रभात की झलक को खोजा,
वह एक बृहत्तर किरण के आरोहण की प्रतीक्षा कर रही थी
और सत्य-सूर्य के विलुप्त गौ-वृन्दों के उद्धार की प्रतीक्षा में थी।
In a splendid extravagance of the waste of God
Dropped carelessly in creation’s spendthrift work,
Left in the chantiers of the bottomless world
And stolen by the robbers of the Deep,
The golden shekels of the Eternal lie,
Hoarded from touch and view and thought’s desire,
Locked in blind antres of the ignorant flood
Lest men should find them and be even as Gods.
परापुरुष की भव्य फिजूलखर्ची की इस बर्बादी ने इन वैभवों को
सृष्टि रचना के अपव्यय के मध्य लापरवाही से गिरा दिया था,
जिनको इस अगाध संसार के संग्रहालयों में छोड़ दिया था
और जिन्हें पातालों की गहनता के दस्युओं ने चुरा लिया,
ये शाश्वत अनृत की स्वर्ण बेड़ियां हैं,
जो स्पर्श, द़ृष्टि और कामना के संकल्प से दूर संचित रखी हैं
अज्ञानता की बाढ. में डूबी अन्धी गुफाओं में बन्द पड़ी हैं;
जिससे कहीं मानव उन्हें सिद्ध कर देवताओं का समकक्ष न बन जाये।
A vision lightened on the viewless heights,
A wisdom illumined from the voiceless depths:
A deeper interpretation greatened Truth,
A grand reversal of the Night and Day;
All the world’s values changed heightening life’s aim;
A wiser word, a larger thought came in
Than what the slow labour of human mind can bring,
A secret sense awoke that could perceive
A Presence and a Greatness everywhere.
अगोचर शिखरों पर एक देव-दर्शन आलोकित हुआ,
उन वाचाहीन गहनताओं से एक प्रज्ञा जाग्रत् हो गयी:
एक गम्भीरतर परिभाषा ने आत्म-सत्य को और महत्ता दी,
देव-दिवस और देव-निशा का एक भव्य प्रत्यावर्तन था;
संम्पूर्ण संसार के मूल्य बदल गये जिसने जीवन का लक्ष्य उन्नत कर दिया;
एक प्रज्ञापूर्ण वचन, एक बृहत्तर संकल्प अधिक महत्ता ले आया
उसकी तुलना में जो पहले मानव मन मन्द परिश्रम कर ला सका था,
एक गुप्त बोध जाग उठा जो अनुभव कर सकता था
सर्वत्र एक दिव्य सान्निध्य को एक दिव्य चरम महत्ता को।
The universe was not now this senseless whirl
Borne round inert on an immense machine;
It cast away its grandiose lifeless front,
A mechanism no more or work of Chance,
But a living movement of the body of God.
यह विश्व अब केवल सार्थकताहीन कालचक्र नहीं रहा
जो एक प्रचण्ड यान्त्रिकता से बंधा जड़ गोल चक्कर लगा रहा था;
अब इसका भव्य दिखता निर्जीव मुखौटा हट गया,
यह एक यान्त्रिकता अथवा नियति द्वारा चालित दैव कार्य नहीं लगता था,
वरन् प्रभु काया का एक सजीव सचेत संचालन हो गया।
A spirit hid in forces and in forms
Was the spectator of the mobile scene:
The beauty and the ceaseless miracle
Let in a glow of the Unmanifest:
The formless Everlasting moved in it
Seeking its own perfect form in souls and things.[42]
आकारों और शक्तियों में एक आत्मा छिपी है
जो इस गतिशील चलचित्र जगत् की द्रष्टा है:
यह सौन्दर्य और ये अविराम घटते चमत्कार
उस अव्यक्त-देवता की आभा में दमकते हैं:
वह निराकारी सत्य नित्य इसमें आ बसा है
और अपनी आत्मपूर्णता का आकार इन जीवों और वस्तुओं में खोज रहा है।
Life kept no more a dull and meaningless shape.
जीवन ने अब अपना एक नीरस और निरर्थक रूप त्याग दिया।
In the struggle and upheaval of the world
He saw the labour of a godhead’s birth:
A secret knowledge masked as Ignorance;
Fate covered with unseen necessity
The game of chance of an omnipotent Will.
इस संसार के संघर्ष और ज्वार-भाटे में
अश्वपति ने एक दिव्यांश के जन्म की प्रसव-वेदना को लक्ष्य किया।
एक गुह्यज्ञान को अविद्या का मुखौटा पहने देखा;
भाग्य के पीछे एक अगोचर अनिवार्यता को छिपे देखा
इस हठात् घटित दैवयोग के खेल में एक सर्वशक्तिशाली परम संकल्प छिपा है।
A glory and a rapture and a charm,
The All-Blissful sat unknown within the heart;
Earth’s pains were the ransom of its prisoned delight.
एक महिमा और एक आह्लाद और एक मोहकता का रूप धारे,
वह पूर्णानन्द-प्रभु हृदय के अन्तर में अज्ञात बसा है;
इस बन्दी जीवन के सुख का मोल वह धरा की पीड़ाएं सह कर चुकाता है।
A glad communion tinged the passing hours;
The days were travellers on a destined road,
The nights companions of his musing spirit.
इन गुजरती घड़ियों को एक प्रसन्न सम्पर्क रंगीन बना देता है;
दिवस यात्रियों समान एक पूर्वनिश्चित पथ पर चलते बीत जाते,
और निशाएं उसकी ध्यानमग्न आत्मा की सहचरियां बन जातीं।
A heavenly impetus quickened all his breast;
The trudge of time changed to a splendid march;
The divine Dwarf towered to unconquered worlds,
Earth grew too narrow for his victory.
एक स्वर्गिक उत्साह ने उसके अन्तर अंगों में तीव्रता भर दी थी;
समय का घिसटना एक भव्य प्रयाण बन गया;
वह देवत्व का लघुरूप अविजित लोकों से ऊंचा उठ गया,
यह पृथ्वी अब उसकी विजय के लिए अति-सीमित थी।
Once only registering the heavy tread
Of a blind Power on human littleness,
Life now became a sure approach to God,
Existence a divine experiment
And cosmos the soul’s opportunity.
पहले वह लक्ष्य करता था एक अन्धी महाशक्ति की
केवल एक बोझिल चाल जिससे हमारी मानवीय लघुता पददलित थी,
किन्तु अब जीवन प्रभु तक जाता एक निश्चित पथ बन गया,
यह अस्तित्व एक दिव्य परीक्षण है
और यह ब्रह्माण्ड अन्तरात्मा का एक सुयोग अवसर।
The world was a conception and a birth
Of Spirit in Matter into living forms,
And Nature bore the Immortal in her womb,
That she might climb through him to eternal life.
यह संसार एक गर्भ धारण और एक जन्म है
शिवतत्त्व का जड़तत्त्व में अवतरण एवं जीवित आकारों में रूपायण है;
और प्रकृति देवी ने अमरत्व को अपने गर्भ में धारण किया है,
जिससे वह उसके सहारे शाश्वत जीवन कीओर चढ़ जाये।
His being lay down in bright immobile peace
And bathed in wells of pure spiritual light;
It wandered in wide fields of wisdom-self
Lit by the rays of an everlasting sun.
अश्वपति की सत्ता उज्ज्वल अचल शान्ति में विश्राम करती
और विशुद्ध आध्यात्मिक प्रकाश के स्रोतों में स्नान करती;
यह प्रज्ञामयी-आत्मचेतना के विस्तृत क्षेत्रों में विचरण करती
जो एक चिरन्तन सूर्य की किरणों से ज्योतित थे।
Even his body’s subtle self within
Could raise the earthly parts towards higher things
And feel on it the breath of heavenlier air.
उसकी काया के सूक्ष्म अन्तर प्राण तक भी
इन पार्थिव अंगों को उच्चतर पदार्थों तक उन्नत कर सकते थे
और इस पर स्वर्गिक श्वास के वातावरण की अनुभूति दे जाते।
Already it journeyed towards divinity:
Upbuoyed upon winged winds of rapid joy,
Upheld to a Light it could not always hold,
It left mind’s distance from the Truth supreme[43]
And lost life’s incapacity for bliss.
इसकी यात्रा तो पहले से ही देवत्व कीओर थीः
तीव्र-हर्षोल्लास के पंखधारी मरुतों पर और ऊंची चढ़ गयी,
एक दिव्य प्रकाश को धारण किया जिसे यह पहले अधिक देर रख नहीं पाती थी;
इसने मन की परम-ऋत से दूरी मिटा दी
और जीवन की आनन्द धारण करने की असमर्थता समाप्त कर दी।
All now suppressed in us began to emerge.
किन्तु अब जो सब हमारे अन्तर में दमित था उभरना आरम्भ हो गया।
Thus came his soul’s release from Ignorance,
His mind and body’s first spiritual change.
इस प्रकार उसका आत्म-पुरुष अविद्या से मुक्ति पा गया,
उसके मन और देह का यह प्रथम आध्यात्मिक रूपान्तर था।
A wide God-knowledge poured down from above,
A new world-knowledge broadened from within:
His daily thoughts looked up to the True and One,
His commonest doings welled from an inner Light.
एक विशाल भागवत-ज्ञान ऊर्ध्व से बरसने लगा,
एक नूतन संसारी-ज्ञान अन्तर से विस्तृत होने लगा:
उसके दैनिक-विचार पूर्ण-सत्य और परमैकम् की ओर देखते,

Awakened to the lines that Nature hides,
Attuned to her movements that exceed our ken,
He grew one with a covert universe.
वह सचेत हो उठा था उन रेखाओं के प्रति जिन्हें प्रकृति देवी छिपा रखती है,
हमारी सीमा से परे की उसकी गतियों से अब वह एक स्वर था,
एक गोपित विश्व के साथ एक था।
His grasp surprised her mightiest energies’ springs;
He spoke with the unknown Guardians of the worlds,
Forms he descried our mortal eyes see not.
उसके ज्ञान की पकड़ ने प्रकृति के महान्शक्ति के स्रोतों को चौंका दिया;
वह लोकों के अज्ञात देव संरक्षकों से वार्तालाप करता,
जिन आकारों को वह देखता वे हमारे मर्त्य नेत्रों के लिए अगोचर हैं।
His wide eyes bodied viewless entities,
He saw the cosmic forces at their work
And felt the occult impulse behind man’s will.
उसके विशाल नेत्रों में अगोचर सत्ताओं की छवि बसती,
वैश्विक शक्तियों को अपने कार्य में लगा वह देखता
और मानव संकल्प के पीछे गुह्य प्रेरणा का अनुभव पाता।
Time’s secrets were to him an oft-read book;
The records of the future and the past
Outlined their excerpts on the etheric page.
काल के रहस्य उसके लिए अनेक बार पढी़ पुस्तक समान थे;
भविष्य और भूत के विवरण एक विद्युती आकाश को
पृष्ठ बनाकर अपने उद्धरणों की बहिर्रेखा आंक देते।
One and harmonious by the Maker’s skill,
The human in him paced with the divine.
His acts betrayed not the interior flame.
वह विश्वकर्मा के शिल्प के स्राथ एक एवं समस्वर था,
उसका नर अब नारायण के साथ विचरण करता;
उसके कर्म अन्तरस्थ ज्योतिशिखा से कपट न करते।
This forged the greatness of his front to earth.
संसार के समक्ष उसका व्यक्तित्व महानता से तपकर सामने आया।
A genius heightened in his body’s cells
That knew the meaning of his fate-hedged works
Akin to the march of unaccomplished Powers
Beyond life’s arc in spirit’s immensities.
उसके देह के कोषों में एक प्रतिभा उन्नत हो उठी
जो उसके भाग्य-सीमाबद्ध कर्मों का अर्थ जानती थी,
असिद्ध महाशक्तियों के प्रयाण से यह सम्बन्धित थी,
जो जीवन वृत्त से परे आत्मा की विशालताओं में रहतीं।
Apart he lived in his mind’s solitude,
A demigod shaping the lives of men:
One soul’s ambition lifted up the race;
A Power worked, but none knew whence it came.
वह अपने मानस की एकान्त शान्ति में पृथक् हो रहता,
मानव-जीवनों की रूपरेखा रचता एक अर्ध-देव था:
एक आत्मा की उच्चाकांक्षा ने समस्त जाति को उन्नत कर दिया;
एक महाशक्ति कार्यरत थी, किन्तु उसके मूल उद़्गम का पता किसी को न था।
The universal strengths were linked with his;
Filling earth’s smallness with their boundless breadths,
He drew the energies that transmute an age.[44]
नृप की शक्ति के साथ वैश्विक बल जुड़ गये थे;
इस पृथ्वी की लघुता को उन्होंने अपने मुक्त विस्तारों से भर दिया,
वह उन ऊर्जाओं को खींचता जो युग-रूपान्तरकारिणी हें।
Immeasurable by the common look,
He made great dreams a mould for coming things
And cast his deeds like bronze to front the years.
सामान्य द़ृष्टि द्वारा वह अपरिमेय था,
उसने भावी आगामी वस्तुओं के लिए महान् सपनों का एक सांचा रच लिया,
और अपनी कृतियों को कांसे में ढाल लिया वर्षों का सामना करने को।
His walk through Time outstripped the human stride.
त्रिकाल में उसके विचरण ने मानवीय चाल को पीछे छोड़ दिया।
Lonely his days and splendid like the sun’s.[45]
उसके दिवस सूर्य समान एकाकी और भव्य थे।
