Canto Five. The Yoga of the King: The Yoga of the Spirit’s Freedom and Greatness
This knowledge first he had of time-born men.
काल में जन्मे मनुष्यों में वह ज्ञान सर्वप्रथम अश्वपति को मिला था।
Admitted through a curtain of bright mind
That hangs between our thought and absolute sight,
He found the occult cave, the mystic door
Near to the well of vision in the soul,
And entered where the Wings of Glory brood
In the sunlit space where all is for ever known.
हमारे विचार और पूर्णद़ृष्टि के मध्य टंगे एक पर्दे को हटा
जो प्रतिभाशाली बुद्धि का है जब वह पार कर अन्तर में प्रवेश कर गया,
तब उसे वह गुह्य कन्दरा मिली, रहस्यमय द्वार मिला
जो अन्तरात्मा में आत्मदर्शन के कूप के समीप ले जाता है
और प्रवेश कर पहुंच गया जहां दिव्य महिमा के भागवत पंख ध्यानमग्न हैं
और उस मौनाकाश में जहां सम्पूर्ण सतत ज्ञात है।
Indifferent to doubt and to belief,
Avid of the naked real’s single shock
He shore the cord of mind that ties the earth-heart
And cast away the yoke of Matter’s law.
वह शंका और विश्वास के प्रति उदासीन था,
पूर्ण नग्न यथार्थ के एकाकी आघात की अभीप्सा से भर
उसने पार्थिव हृदय को बांधती मन की डोर काट दी
और भौतिक-प्रकृति के विधान के बन्धनों को उतार फेंक दिया।
The body’s rules bound not the spirit’s powers:
When life had stopped its beats, death broke not in;
He dared to live when breath and thought were still.
शारीरिक नियम आत्मा की शक्तियों को नहीं बांध सकते:
जब जीवन की धड़कने रुक गयीं उसमें तब भी मृत्यु प्रवेश नहीं कर सकी;
जब श्वास और विचार थम गये वह तब भी जीवित था।
Thus could he step into that magic place
Which few can even glimpse with hurried glance
Lifted for a moment from mind’s laboured works
And the poverty of Nature’s earthly sight.
इसी कारण वह उस जादुई प्रवेश में आगे बढ़ सका
जिसे अति अल्पजन केवल उड़ती द़ृष्टि से देख पाते हैं
जब वे क्षण भर को मानसिक श्रम से ऊपर उठ जाते हैं
और पार्थिव प्रकृति की संसारी द़ृष्टि की दीनता से उन्नत हो जाते हैं।
All that the Gods have learned is there self-known.
जो सकल देवताओं ने जाना है वहां आत्म-ज्ञात है।
There in a hidden chamber closed and mute
Are kept the record graphs of the cosmic scribe,
And there the tables of the sacred Law,
There is the Book of Being’s index page,
The text and glossary of the Vedic truth
Are there; the rhythms and metres of the stars
Significant of the movements of our fate:
The symbol powers of number and of form,
And the secret code of the history of the world[74]
And Nature’s correspondence with the soul
Are written in the mystic heart of life.
वहां पर बन्द और नीरव एक गुह्य-कक्ष में
ब्रह्माण्डीय लिपिक के अंकित आलेख-पत्र रखे हैं,
और पावन दिव्य-विधान की सूचियां भी रखी हैं
वहां पर विश्व-पुरुष की आदि पुस्तक का सूची पृष्ठ है,
वैदिक-सत्य का मूल भाष्य और विषय सूची है;
तारों के वृत्तों की तालबद्ध सुसंगति है
जो हमारी नियति के गतिसंचलन का महत्त्वपूर्ण भाग है:
संख्या और निर्माण-रचना की प्रतीक शक्तियां हैं,
और इस संसार के इतिहास के गुप्त संकेत सूत्र हैं,
और इस अन्तरात्मा के साथ परा-प्रकृति का आदान-प्रदान
सब वहां पर प्राणशक्ति के गुह्य अन्तर पर लिखित हैं।
In the glow of the Spirit’s room of memories
He could recover the luminous marginal notes
Dotting with light the crabbed ambiguous scroll,
Rescue the preamble and the saving clause
Of the dark Agreement by which all is ruled
That rises from material Nature’s sleep
To clothe the Everlasting in new shapes.
अन्तरात्मा की स्मृतियों के कक्ष की उज्ज्वलता में
नृप उन आलोकमय उपांत टिप्पणियों को पुन: प्राप्त कर सका
क्योंकि उस जटिल धूमिल खाते पर वे प्रकाश बिन्दु सम अंकित थीं।
वह उस काली आदि-संधि की, जिससे सब शासित हैं
प्रस्तावना और सुरक्षा की शर्त को सुरक्षित निकाल लाया,
यह समझौता जड़ विश्व-प्रकृति की निद्रा से उदित होता है
जिसने चिरन्तन प्रभु को नये रूपों में ढाल सजा दिया है।
He could re-read now and interpret new
Its strange symbol letters, scattered abstruse signs,
Resolve its oracle and its paradox,
Its riddling phrases and its blindfold terms,
The deep oxymoron of its truth’s repliques,
And recognise as a just necessity
Its hard conditions for the mighty work,—
Nature’s impossible Herculean toil
Only her warlock wisecraft could enforce,
Its law of opposition of the Gods,
Its list of inseparable contraries.
वह अब इसे फिर से पढ़ सका और नयी परिभाषा कर सका
इसके विचित्र प्रतीक अक्षरों की, बिखरे हुए दुर्बोध संकेतों की,
वह वेदवाणी के छन्दोंको और इसकी समस्याओं को सुलझा सका,
गुप्त मुहावरों और इसकी गुप्त शब्दावली के सूत्रों को,
प्रकृति की सत्य-प्रतिकृतियों की गहराई में छिपे विरोधी द्वन्द्वों में गोपित सत्य को,
और इनको एक न्यायोचित आवश्यकता सम पहिचान गया
सृष्टि सर्जन के विशाल कार्यपूर्ति हेतु इसकी कठोर शर्तों को जान गया,-
विश्व-प्रकृति के असम्भव दिखते भागीरथ परिश्रम को
जिसे केवल उसी का युद्ध कौशल सिद्ध कर सका था,
परम देवों के इस विरोधी विधान का ज्ञान उसने पा लिया,
तथा आपस में जुड़े अपृथकनीय द्वन्द्वों की सूची को पढ़ लिया।
The dumb great Mother in her cosmic trance
Exploiting for creation’s joy and pain
Infinity’s sanction to the birth of form,
Accepts indomitably to execute
The will to know in an inconscient world,
The will to live under a reign of death,
The thirst for rapture in a heart of flesh,
And works out through the appearance of a soul
By a miraculous birth in plasm and gas
The mystery of God’s covenant with the Night.
मूक महती जगज्जननी अपनी विश्व-समाधि में लीन
सृष्टि की पीड़ा और हर्ष का पूरी तरह उपयोग करती है
अनन्त का आकार में जन्म लेने की स्वीकृति का लाभ उठाती है,
एक अचित् संसार में जानने की इच्छा की आवश्यकता है
और उसकी पूर्ति की अनिवार्यता वह स्वीकारती है,
मृत्यु के इस शासन में जीवित रहने की इच्छा को,
एवं दैहिक हृदय में आह्लाद की प्यास को मानती है
और एक जीव की अभिव्यक्ति के माध्यम से इसका परीक्षण करती
एक चमत्कारी प्राण वायु और जीवाणु में जन्मी देह द्वारा कार्य करती
वह असत्-रात्रि के साथ हुए परमात्मा के सन्धि रहस्य को सुलझाती है।
Once more was heard in the still cosmic Mind
The Eternal’s promise to his labouring Force
Inducing the world-passion to begin,
The cry of birth into mortality
And the opening verse of the tragedy of Time.
अब एक बार पुन: उस स्थिर नीरव वैश्विक मानस में सुनायी दी
अपनी श्रमरत चित्शक्ति के साथ शाश्वत प्रभु की प्रतिश्रुति
जिसने जग-प्राणवासना को प्रेरित किया आरम्भ करने
मृत्यु लोक में जन्म लेने की प्रसव-वेदना के चीत्कार को
और काल के दुःखदायी नाटक काव्य का प्रथम दोहा आरम्भ करने को।
Out of the depths the world’s buried secret rose;[75]
He read the original ukase kept back
In the locked archives of the spirit’s crypt,
And saw the signature and fiery seal
Of Wisdom on the dim Power’s hooded work
Who builds in Ignorance the steps of Light.
आदि गहनताओं से इस जगत् सृष्टि का दबा रहस्य ऊपर उठ आया;
राजा ने चैत्य आत्मा की गुह्य के बन्द पुरा लेखागार में
पीछे कीओर रखा मूल आज्ञापत्र पढ़ा,
और उसने प्रज्ञादेवी के हस्ताक्षर और ज्वलन्त मुहर
अचित् महाशक्ति के पट के पीछे छिपे कार्य पर देखी,
जो अज्ञ-रात्रि में दिव्य प्रकाश के सोपानों को रचती है।
A sleeping deity opened deathless eyes:
He saw the unshaped thought in soulless forms,
Knew Matter pregnant with spiritual sense,
Mind dare the study of the Unknowable,
Life its gestation of the Golden Child.
एक निद्रित देवी ने अपने अमर नयनों को उघाड़ा:
राजा ने स्वत्वहीन आकृतियों में अनगढ़ विचार देखा,
सकल जड़तत्त्व आत्मा के सार से गर्भित है जान गया,
मन-शक्ति ने चिर-अज्ञेय प्रभु का अध्ययन करने का साहस किया,
प्राण-शक्ति ने दिव्य स्वर्ण-शिशु की धाय बनने का साहस जुटाया।
In the light flooding thought’s blank vacancy,
Interpreting the universe by soul signs
He read from within the text of the without:
The riddle grew plain and lost its catch obscure.
विचार से शून्य अन्तराल में उमड़ती ज्योति की बाढ़ में
उसने आत्म-चिह्नों द्वारा इस विश्व की व्याख्या कर डाली
बाह्य जगत् की पुस्तिका अपने अन्तर से समझ पढ़ डाली:
अब पहेली खुल गयी और इसने अपनी अस्पष्टता की पकड़ खो दी।
A larger lustre lit the mighty page.
उस गुरुत्वपूर्ण पृष्ठ को एक महत्तर द्युति ने जगमगा दिया।
A purpose mingled with the whims of Time,
A meaning met the stumbling pace of Chance
And Fate revealed a chain of seeing will;
A conscious wideness filled the old dumb Space.
काल-गति की सनकों में एक प्रयोजन स्पष्ट हो जुड़ गया,
दैवयोग की ठोकर खाती चाल में एक सार्थकता आ मिली
और विधाता ने द़ृष्टिवान् संकल्प की एक श्रृंखला प्रकटा दी;
उस पुरातन मूढ़ अन्तराकाश को एक सचेत विस्तार ने भर दिया।
In the Void he saw throned the Omniscience supreme.
उस महाशून्याकाश में उसने सर्वज्ञ सर्वेश्वर को आसीन देखा।
A Will, a hope immense now seized his heart,
And to discern the superhuman’s form
He raised his eyes to unseen spiritual heights,
Aspiring to bring down a greater world.
एक आत्म-संकल्प एक विशाल आशा ने अब उसके ह्रदय को बांध लिया,
और उस अतिमानव की आकृति खोजने के लिए
उसने अपने नयनों को अद़ृश्य आध्यात्मिक उच्चताओं कीओर उठाया,
वह एक महत्तर जगत् नीचे उतार लाने की अभीप्सा से भर गया।
The glory he had glimpsed must be his home.
जिस महिमा की झलक उसने पायी थी इसे उसका घर अब बनना होगा।
A brighter heavenlier sun must soon illume
This dusk room with its dark internal stair,
The infant soul in its small nursery school
Mid objects meant for a lesson hardly learned
Outgrow its early grammar of intellect
And its imitation of Earth-Nature’s art,
Its earthly dialect to God-language change,
In living symbols study Reality
And learn the logic of the Infinite.
इस द्युतितर दिव्यतर सूर्य को शीघ्र इस धूमिल कक्ष पर
तथा इसके अन्धेरे अन्तर-सोपान पर चमकना होगा,
इस शिशु चैत्यात्मा ने अपनी नन्हीं बाल-पाठशाला में जो सीखा है
इन भौतिक उपकरणों के मध्य जो इसके शिक्षार्थ थे
अब इसे अपने बौद्धिक आरम्भिक व्याकरण से आगे बढ़ना है
और अपनी पार्थिव जड़-प्रकृति की दिखावटी कला को छोड़ना है,
अपनी पार्थिव भाषा को देव-भाषा में बदलना है,
जीवित प्रतीकों में परम सत् का अध्ययन करना है
और चिरन्तन प्रभु के सत्य विवेक को सीखना है।
The Ideal must be Nature’s common truth,[76]
The body illumined with the indwelling God,
The heart and mind feel one with all that is,
A conscious soul live in a conscious world.
इसी परम आदर्श को समस्त प्रकृति का सामान्य सत्य बनाना होगा,
तब यह शरीर अन्तर्यामी प्रभु के आलोक से भर जायेगा,
ये हृदय और मन सकल सृष्टि के साथ एकत्व अनुभव करेंगे,
एक चैतन्यात्मा एक सचेत जगत् में बसती है।
As through a mist a sovereign peak is seen,
The greatness of the eternal Spirit appeared,
Exiled in a fragmented universe
Amid half-semblances of divine things.
जैसे कि धुंध के मध्य एक उत्तुंग शिखर दिखायी देता है,
वैसे ही खण्ड-खण्ड में बंटे एक विश्व में निष्कासित
दिव्यतर वस्तुओं के अर्ध-प्रतीकों-आभासों के मध्य चमकती
शाश्वत चिदात्मा की परम महिमा व्यक्त हो उठी।
These now could serve no more his regal turn:
The Immortal’s pride refused the doom to live
A miser of the scanty bargain made
Between our littleness and bounded hopes
And the compassionate Infinitudes.
भौतिक पदार्थ अब नृप के भव्य आवर्तन हित उपयोगी नहीं रहे;
उसके अमरत्व के दर्प ने भाग्याधीन हो जाना स्वीकार नहीं किया,
यह एक कृपण का तुच्छ सौदा था
जिसे हमारी लघुता और बन्धक आशाओं ने
करुणागार की अनन्तताओं के साथ किया था।
His height repelled the lowness of earth’s state:
A wideness discontented with its frame
Resiled from poor assent to Nature’s terms,
The harsh contract spurned and the diminished lease.
योगी की महत्ता ने पृथ्वी की निम्न-अवस्था से मुंह फेर लिया:
अपने संकीर्ण चौखटे से असन्तुष्ट एक विस्तृतता
अपरा-प्रकृति की शर्त्तों की तुच्छ स्वीकृति से बाहर निकल गयी,
निष्ठुर समझौते की अवज्ञा कर दी और पट्टे की अवधि घटा दी।
Only beginnings are accomplished here;
Our base’s Matter seems alone complete,
An absolute machine without a soul.
यहां इस जग में केवल आरम्भ ही सम्पादित होते हैं:
हमारा मूलाधार जड़तत्त्व ही केवल सम्पूर्ण दिखता है,
बिना एक आत्मा का एक पूर्ण यन्त्र लगता है।
Or all seems a misfit of half ideas,
Or we saddle with the vice of earthly form
A hurried imperfect glimpse of heavenly things,
Guesses and travesties of celestial types.
या सकल अधूरे विचारों का एक बेमेल संसार लगता है
अथवा हम पार्थिव आकार के किसी व्यसन से बंध जाते हैं
स्वर्गिक तत्त्वों की ओर एक उड़ती अधूरी द़ृष्टि डालते हैं,
और दिव्यतर अलौकिक वर्गों कीकल्पना और विकल्पनाएं करते हैं।
Here chaos sorts itself into a world,
A brief formation drifting in the void:
Apings of knowledge, unfinished arcs of power,
Flamings of beauty into earthly shapes,
Love’s broken reflexes of unity
Swim, fragment mirrorings of a floating sun.
यहां की अन्ध व्यवस्था ने स्वयं को एक संसार का रूप दे दिया है,
एक शून्याकाश में मानों एक क्षणिक सृष्टि बहती लगती हैः
जिसमें ज्ञान की नकल होती है, शक्ति के अधूरे बनेवृत्त हैं
पार्थिव आकृतियों में ढली सौन्दर्य की ज्वालाएं हैं,
प्रेम की टूटी छायाएं हैं जो एकता का आभास देती तैरती हैं,
जो मानों एक सूर्य शीशे के टुकडों में प्रतिबिम्बित हो बंट गया हो।
A packed assemblage of crude tentative lives
Are pieced into a tessellated whole.
अनगढ़ अनित्य जीवनों को एकत्र कर बांध दिया हो
टुकड़ों को एक गुच्छित सम्पूर्णता में जोड़ दिया हो।
There is no perfect answer to our hopes;
There are blind voiceless doors that have no key;
Thought climbs in vain and brings a borrowed light,
Cheated by counterfeits sold to us in life’s mart,
Our hearts clutch at a forfeited heavenly bliss.[77]
यहां हमारी आशाओं का कोई परिपूर्ण प्रत्युत्तर नहीं मिलता है;
यहां अन्धे मूक द्वार हैं जिनकी कोई कुंजी नहीं है;
विचार निष्फल आरोहण करते हैं और एक उदार प्रकाश ले आते हैं,
जीवन के हाट में खरीदे गये नकली माल से छले गये,
हमारे हृदय एक गैर कानूनी स्वर्गिक सुख को पकड़े रहते हैं।
There is provender for the mind’s satiety,
There are thrills of the flesh, but not the soul’s desire.
यहां मन की तृप्ति के लिए भी भोजन है,
शारीरिक सुख का रोमांच है, किन्तु आत्मा की कामना नहीं है।
Here even the highest rapture Time can give
Is a mimicry of ungrasped beatitudes,
A mutilated statue of ecstasy,
A wounded happiness that cannot live,
A brief felicity of mind or sense
Thrown by the World-Power to her body-slave,
Or a simulacrum of enforced delight
In the seraglios of Ignorance.
त्रिकाल द्वारा प्रदत्त सर्वोत्तम सुखाह्लाद यहां मिल सकता है
यह उस परमानन्द की तुलना में जो अग्राह्य है, एक नकली सुख है,
आनन्दातिरेक की मात्र एक विकृत छवि है,
एक आहत प्रसन्नता है जो जीवित नहीं रह सकती है,
मानस या इन्द्रियानुभव का एक क्षणिक आनन्द है
जिसे वैश्विक महाशक्ति अपनी गुलाम-देह कीओर फेंकती है,
या घोर अविद्या के अन्तःपुर में भोगा गया
बलात्-हर्ष का एक आभास मात्र है।
For all we have acquired soon loses worth,
An old disvalued credit in Time’s bank,
Imperfection’s cheque drawn on the Inconscient.
क्योंकि हम जो भी उपलब्ध करते हैं वह शीघ्र ही नगण्य हो जाता है,
महाकाल के खाते में एक पुरानी मूल्यहीन साख बन रह जाता है,
जड़-अचित् के बैंक से लिया गया एक अपूर्णता का चैक हो जाता है।
An inconsequence dogs every effort made,
And chaos waits on every cosmos formed:
In each success a seed of failure lurks.
हमारे प्रत्येक प्रयास का पीछा एक असंगति करती है,
और प्रत्येक सृष्टि की रचना के साथ एक अन्ध-व्यवस्था लगी है:
प्रत्येक सफलता में एक क्षयकारी बीज छिपा है।
He saw the doubtfulness of all things here,
The incertitude of man’s proud confident thought,
The transience of the achievements of his force.
यहां की समस्त वस्तुओं में राजा ने सन्देह को छिपा पाया,
मानव के गर्वीले विश्वासपूर्ण विचार में अनिश्चय को देखा,
बल-वीर्य द्वारा अर्जित उपलब्धियों की क्षणिकता को देखा।
A thinking being in an unthinking world,
An island in the sea of the Unknown,
He is a smallness trying to be great,
An animal with some instincts of a god,
His life a story too common to be told,
His deeds a number summing up to nought,
His consciousness a torch lit to be quenched,
His hope a star above a cradle and grave.
एक विचारशून्य जगत् में एक विचारशील सत्ता,
यह अज्ञेय चरमता के सागर में एक नन्हा टापू जैसा है,
मानव एक लघुता है जो महान् बनने के प्रयास में है,
एक देवता की कुछ वृत्तियों को धारण किये वह एक पशु है,
उसका जीवन अति सामान्य कथा है कथन योग्य नहीं है,
उसकी कृतियां एक संख्या है जिसका जोड़ नगण्य है,
उसकी चेतना एक मशाल है जो बुझने को जलती है,
उसकी आशा एक तारा है जो उसके पालने और कब्र पर दूर नभ में चमकता है।
And yet a greater destiny may be his,
For the eternal Spirit is his truth.
तथापि एक महत्तर नियति उसकी हो सकती है,
क्योंकि चैत्यात्मा उसका अपना सत्य है।
He can re-create himself and all around
And fashion new the world in which he lives:
He, ignorant, is the Knower beyond Time,
He is the Self above Nature, above Fate
वह अपना तथा अपने चहुं ओर का नवनिर्माण कर सकता है
और जिस संसार में वह रहता है उसे नया रूप दे सकता है:
वह, अज्ञानी, त्रिकाल से परे का आत्मज्ञानी है,
विश्व-प्रकृति के और दैवनियति के ऊर्ध्व में प्रतिष्ठित वह स्वयं-भू है।
His soul retired from all that he had done.
नृप की आत्मा ने अपने सकल कृत कर्मों से अवकाश ग्रहण कर लिया।
Hushed was the futile din of human toil,[78]
Forsaken wheeled the circle of the days;
In distance sank the crowded tramp of life.
मानवीय श्रम का अर्थहीन कोलाहल अब शान्त था,
दिवसों का चक्कर परित्यक्त हो घूमता रहा;
जीवन की भीड़ का शोर अब दूर में जा डूब गया।
The Silence was his sole companion left.
आत्म-नीरवता अब उसकी अकेली साथिन थी।
Impassive he lived immune from earthly hopes,
A figure in the ineffable Witness’ shrine
Pacing the vast cathedral of his thoughts
Under its arches dim with infinity
And heavenward brooding of invisible wings.
धीर शान्त वह पार्थिव आशाओं से अप्रभावित रहता,
अनिर्वचनीय परम-साक्षी के तपोवन में एक प्रतिमा सम
अपने विचारों के विशाल प्रांगण में विचरण करता
मुख्य तोरणों तले जो शाश्वतता से धुंधला गये थे
और अद़ृश्य पंखों के साथ स्वर्ग कीओर ध्यान लगाये थे।
A call was on him from intangible heights;
Indifferent to the little outpost Mind,
He dwelt in the wideness of the Eternal’s reign.
अप्रत्यक्ष ऊर्ध्वलोकों से उसे एक आमन्त्रण मिला था;
मानस की इस लघुसीमाचौकी कीओर वह उदासीन था,
राजा चिरन्तन साम्राज्य के विस्तारों में निवास करता।
His being now exceeded thinkable Space,
His boundless thought was neighbour to cosmic sight:
A universal light was in his eyes,
A golden influx flowed through heart and brain;
A force came down into his mortal limbs,
A current from eternal seas of Bliss;
He felt the invasion and the nameless joy.
अब उसकी सत्ता का विस्तार विचारशील मनाकाश पार कर गया,
उसका असीम संकल्प ब्रह्माण्डीय दर्शन का पड़ोसी था:
उसके नेत्रों में एक विश्व-प्रकाश का तेज था,
हृदय और मस्तिष्क में एक स्वर्ण-प्रवाह बहता;
उसके नश्वर अंगों में एक दिव्य-ऊर्जा अवतरित हुई,
परमानन्द के अनन्त सागरों से एक धारा उतर आयी थी;
एक अनामी हर्ष से आक्रामित होने की अनुभूति उसे मिली।
Aware of his occult omnipotent Source,
Allured by the omniscient Ecstasy,
A living centre of the Illimitable
Widened to equate with the world’s circumference,
He turned to his immense spiritual fate.
अपने गुह्य सर्वशक्तिशाली आत्मस्रोत के विषय में वह सचेत,
सर्वत्र परमानन्द द्वारा आत्मविभोर हो आकर्षित,
अपरम्पार परमेश्वर का एक सजीव केन्द्र बन
वह इस जगत्-परिधि समान विशाल हो गया,
और अपनी महान् आध्यात्मिक नियति की ओर मुड़ गया।
Abandoned on a canvas of torn air,
A picture lost in far and fading streaks,
The earth-nature’s summits sank below his feet:
He climbed to meet the infinite more above.
जैसे हवाओंसे जीर्ण-शीर्ण एक फेंका हुआ चित्रपट हो
जिस पर अंकित चित्र सुदूर धुंधलाती लकीरों में खो गया हो,
वैसे ही भौतिक स्वभाव के शिखर उसके चरणों तले डूब गये:
नित्यता से मिलने वह और ऊपर चढ़ गया।
The Immobile’s ocean-silence saw him pass,
An arrow leaping through eternity
Suddenly shot from the tense bow of Time,
A ray returning to its parent sun.
परमाचल के मौन-महासागर ने उसे जाते देखा,
अचानक महाकाल के सधे धनुष से छोड़ा गया
वह एक तीर समान शाश्वतता में झपट कर प्रवेश कर गया,
अपने पिता-सूर्य में जाती एक किरणसम लौट गया।
Opponent of that glory of escape,
The black Inconscient swung its dragon tail
Lashing a slumberous Infinite by its force
Into the deep obscurities of form:
Death lay beneath him like a gate of sleep.[79]
पर भव्य मुक्ति की चरम-विरोधिनी,
एक काली जड़-निश्चेतना ने अपनी दानवी पूंछ घुमायी
और आकार की गहन तामसिक धूमिलता में सोयी
एक उनींदी शाश्वतता पर पूरे बल से कशाघात किया:
पर अब मृत्यु उसके चरणों तले निद्रा के एक द्वार सम सोयी थी।
One-pointed to the immaculate Delight,
Questing for God as for a splendid prey,
He mounted burning like a cone of fire.
अमल-पावन शिवानन्द पर एक तीर सम लक्ष्य पर एकाग्रित,
वह प्रभु को एक शानदार शिकार सम खोजता
अग्नि के एक प्रज्वलित कोण सम ऊर्ध्व में चढ़ गया।
To a few is given that godlike rare release.
ऐसी देवोपम अनुपम मुक्ति विरले जन ही पाते हैं।
One among many thousands never touched,
Engrossed in the external world’s design,
Is chosen by a secret witness Eye
And driven by a pointing hand of Light
Across his soul’s unmapped immensitudes.
इस बाहरी संसारी योजना एवं कार्यों में व्यस्त,
अनेक सहस्र जनों में से जिन्हें प्रभु-स्पर्श कभी नहीं मिला है,
उनमें से एक गुह्य साक्षी आत्म-द़ृष्टि द्वारा चुन लिया जाता है
और वह एक दैवी प्रकाश का संकेत करते हाथ द्वारा
निज आत्मा कीअमेय विशालताओं पर संचारित किया जाता है।
A pilgrim of the everlasting Truth,
Our measures cannot hold his measureless mind;
He has turned from the voices of the narrow realm
And left the little lane of human Time.
शाश्वत परम-सत्य का वह एक तीर्थ-यात्री,
जिसका असीम मन हमारे भौतिक मापदण्डोंसे नहीं मापा जा सकता;
उसने भौतिक संकुचित राज्य की पुकारों से मुख मोड़ लिया
और मानवीय काल अवधि की संकरी गली को छोड़ दिया।
In the hushed precincts of a vaster plan
He treads the vestibules of the Unseen,
Or listens following a bodiless Guide
To a lonely cry in boundless vacancy.
एक महत्तर योजना के नीरव मूक प्रदेशों में
वह अगोचर परम के प्रकोष्ठों में विचरण करता,
अथवा एक अदेही परम पथ-प्रदर्शक का अनुसरण करता
अनन्त शून्यता में एक एकाकी आवाहन की पुकार सुनता।
All the deep cosmic murmur falling still,
He lives in the hush before the world was born,
His soul left naked to the timeless One.
अब समस्त वैश्विक गहन-ध्वनियां शान्त नीरव हो गयी थीं,
वह इस जगत् के जन्म से पूर्व की आदि निस्तब्धता में बसता,
उसका आत्म-पुरुष अकाल परमैकम् के समक्ष नग्न खड़ा था।
Far from compulsion of created things
Thought and its shadowy idols disappear,
The moulds of form and person are undone.
इन रचित पदार्थों की बाध्यता से अति दूर
जहां विचार और इसकी छायाभासी प्रतिभाएं विलीन हो जाती हैं;
आकार और व्यक्तित्व के ढांचे जहां मिट जाते हैं।
The ineffable Wideness knows him for its own.
A lone forerunner of the Godward earth,
Among the symbols of yet unshaped things
Watched by closed eyes, mute faces of the Unborn,
He journeys to meet the Incommunicable,
Hearing the echo of his single steps
In the eternal courts of Solitude.
A nameless Marvel fills the motionless hours.
अनिर्वचनीय विराट्विस्तरों ने उसे अपना जान अपना लिया,
प्रभु कीओर गतिशील पृथ्वी का वह एक अकेला अग्र-धावक,
अभी तक अनगढ़ित वस्तुओं के प्रतीकों के मध्य बढ़ता जा रहा था
अजात देवों के मूक चेहरे और बन्द नयन उस पर द़ृष्टि गड़ाये थे,
और वह अगम्य प्रभु से मिलने यात्रा पर बढ़ा जा रहा था।
उसके अद्वितीय कदमों की गूंज की ध्वनि
जब चरम शान्ति के ऐकान्तिक सनातन प्रांगणों में सुनायी दे जाती,
तो उन स्थिर घडियों को एक अनामी दिव्य चमत्कार से भर देती।
His spirit mingles with Eternity’s heart
And bears the silence of the Infinite.
योगी की चेतना चिरन्तनता के ह्रदय में जा घुल-मिल एक होगयी
और नित्य प्रभु के मौन को धारण कर यह शान्त-नीरव हो गयी।
In a divine retreat from mortal thought,
In a prodigious gesture of soul-sight,[80]
His being towered into pathless heights,
Naked of its vesture of humanity.
नश्वर विचार से पीछे हटकर एक दिव्य विश्राम में,
आत्म-दर्शन की एक अपूर्व चेष्टा में,
उसकी चैत्य-सत्ता अपना मानवीय आवरण त्याग कर,
पथविहीन ऊंचाइयों पर उठती गयी।
As thus it rose, to meet him bare and pure
A strong Descent leaped down. A Might, a Flame,
A Beauty half-visible with deathless eyes,
A violent Ecstasy, a Sweetness dire,
Enveloped him with its stupendous limbs
And penetrated nerve and heart and brain
That thrilled and fainted with the epiphany:
His nature shuddered in the Unknown’s grasp.
इस तरह जैसे-जैसे यह उन्नत होती गयी, यथार्थता और विशुद्धता को
भेंटने एक तेजस्वी दिव्य अवतरण नीचे कूदा। एक देव-शक्ति,
एक दिव्य ज्वाला, अमर नेत्रों द्वारा अर्धगोचर एक दिव्य सौन्दर्य ने,
एक तीव्र आत्मानन्द, एक गम्भीर अलौकिक माधुर्य ने,
योगी को घेर कर अपने बृहत् अंगों में जकड़ लिया,
और स्नायु एवं हृदय तथा मस्तिष्क को बींध दिया
वह पुलकित हो प्रभु प्रकाश से रोमाञ्चित अचेत हो गया:
परम अज्ञेय के आलिंगन में बंध उसकी प्रकृति सिहर उठी।
In a moment shorter than Death, longer than Time,
By a power more ruthless than Love, happier than Heaven,
Taken sovereignly into eternal arms,
Haled and coerced by a stark absolute bliss,
In a whirlwind circuit of delight and force
Hurried into unimaginable depths,
Upborne into immeasurable heights,
It was torn out from its mortality
And underwent a new and bourneless change.
उस एक पल में जो मृत्यु-काल से अणुतर था, और त्रिकाल से दीर्घतर था,
दिव्य प्रेम से अधिक निष्ठुर एक दैवी बल ने, जो स्वर्ग से अधिक सुखदायी था,
उसे शाश्वत भुजाओं में एकाधिपत्यता से भर लिया,
एक सटीक सर्वोच्च प्रखर आनन्द से खिंची एवंविवश बनी उसकी प्रकृति;
आनन्द और ऊर्जा के एक भंवर चक्र में फंसी,
अति शीघ्रता से कल्पना के परे की गहराइयों में डुबो दी गयी
मापातीत उच्चताओं तक उठा दी गयी,
अपनी मर्त्यता से पूरी तरह काट यह अलग कर दी गयी।
और एक सर्वांगीण नव परिवर्तन अब उसमें आ गया।
An Omniscient knowing without sight or thought,
An indecipherable Omnipotence,
A mystic Form that could contain the worlds,
Yet make one human breast its passionate shrine,
Drew him out of his seeking loneliness
Into the magnitudes of God’s embrace.
बिना द़ृष्टि या बिना मनन की एक परम सर्वज्ञता है
अनुभव से परे एक स्पर्शातीत दिव्य सर्वशक्तिमत्ता है,
समस्त लोकों का धारक एक गुह्य ब्रह्माकार है,
फिर भी वह एक मानव अन्तर का अपना भावभरा मन्दिर बना लेता है,
उसने योगी को उसके एकाकी संधान के अकेलेपन से बाहर खींच
प्रभु आलिंगन की भव्य विशालताओं में बांध दिया।
As when a timeless Eye annuls the hours
Abolishing the agent and the act,
So now his spirit shone out wide, blank, pure:
His wakened mind became an empty slate
On which the Universal and Sole could write.
यथा जब एक अकाल दिव्य नेत्र खुलकर काल की घड़ियां मिटा देता है
कर्ता और कर्म का अन्तर मिटा देता है,
वैसे ही उसकी जीवात्मा विशुद्ध, कोरी, विशाल हो बाहर चमक उठी:
उसका जाग्रत् मन एक खाली स्लेट बन गया
जिस पर विश्वात्मा और परमैकम् लिख सकता था।
All that represses our fallen consciousness
Was taken from him like a forgotten load:
A fire that seemed the body of a god
Consumed the limiting figures of the past
And made large room for a new self to live.
हमारी पतित चेतना पर जो सब यहां दमनकारी चक्र चलता है
उसकी चेतना से यह सब विस्मृत भार सम उतार लिया गया था:
एक देवाकार सम दिखती एक पावन-अग्नि ने
अतीत के सीमाबद्ध आकारों को भस्म कर डाला
और एक नव-जात चैत्य-सत्ता के निवास के लिए बृहत्तर कक्ष रच दिया।
Eternity’s contact broke the moulds of sense.[81]
चिरन्तन प्रभु के सम्पर्क ने इन्द्रिय की सीमाओं को भंग कर दिया।
A greater force than the earthly held his limbs,
Huge workings bared his undiscovered sheaths,
Strange energies wrought and screened tremendous hands
Unwound the triple cord of mind and freed
The heavenly wideness of a Godhead’s gaze.
पार्थिवता से एक महत्तरशक्ति ने उसके अंगों पर अधिकार कर लिया,
और बृहत् प्रक्रियाओं ने उसके गुप्त कोषों को प्रकटा दिया,
विलक्षण जड़-ऊर्जाओं द्वारा गठित और भीषण गुप्त करों द्वारा गोपित
उसके मन की त्रिगुणी रज्जु खोल दी और मुक्त कर दी
चैत्यसत्ता के चितवन की दिव्य विशालता।
As through a dress the wearer’s shape is seen,
There reached through forms to the hidden absolute
A cosmic feeling and transcendent sight.
जैसे एक पोशाक के मध्य पहनने वाले की रूपरेखा झलकती हो,
ऐसे ही आकारों के पीछे छिपे वह पूर्णतत्त्व तक पहुंच जाता
और विश्व-एकत्व और परात्पर द़ृष्टि की अनुभूति पाता।
Increased and heightened were the instruments.
उसके इन्द्रिय-उपकरणों में प्रगति और उन्नति हो गयी थी।
Illusion lost her aggrandising lens;
As from her failing hand the measures fell,
Atomic looked the things that loomed so large.
माया-देवी ने अपना आवर्धककारी दर्पण खो दिया:
मानों उसके निष्फल कर से मापदण्ड गिर गया हो,
पहले जो वस्तुएं, घटनाएं भीमकाय दिखतीं अब वे ही अणु सम लगती थीं।
The little ego’s ring could join no more;
In the enormous spaces of the self
The body now seemed only a wandering shell,
His mind the many-frescoed outer court
Of an imperishable Inhabitant:
His spirit breathed a superhuman air.
क्षुद्र अहम्-घेरे की गोलाई के छोर अब जुड़ नहीं पाते थे;
चिदाकाशों के विशाल विस्तारों में
यह देह अब एक विचरण करती खोल सम लगती,
उसका मन बहुरंगी भित्तिचित्रों से सज्जित
एक बहिरांगन था, एक अन्तर्वासी अविनाशी प्रभु का:
उसकी चेतना एक अतिमानवीय परिवेश में श्वास लेती।
The imprisoned deity rent its magic fence.
As with a sound of thunder and of seas,
Vast barriers crashed around the huge escape.
उसकी कारावासी दिव्यता ने अपनी जादुई बाड़ भंग कर डाली थी।
मानों बिजली की कड़क एवं सागरों के नाद के साथ
उसकी विशाल भव्य विमुक्ति को चारोंओर से घेरे बन्धन धराशायी हो गये।
Immutably coeval with the world,
Circle and end of every hope and toil
Inexorably drawn round thought and act,
The fixed immovable peripheries
Effaced themselves beneath the Incarnate’s tread.
इस संसार के साथ जन्मी और द़ृढ़तापूर्वक बनायी गयी यह सीमा है,
यह घेरा और अन्त है प्रत्येक आशा और परिश्रम का
जो विचार और क्रिया के चहुं ओर द़ृढ़ता से आंका जाता है,
पर इन निश्चित अचल परिधियों ने
इस अवतारी पुरुष के चरण तले स्वयंको मिटा डाला।
The dire velamen and the bottomless crypt
Between which life and thought for ever move,
Forbidden still to cross the dim dread bounds,
The guardian darknesses mute and formidable,
Empowered to circumscribe the wingless spirit
In the boundaries of Mind and Ignorance,
Protecting no more a dual eternity
Vanished rescinding their enormous role:
Once figure of creation’s vain ellipse,
The expanding zero lost its giant curve.[82]
इसी घोर सीमाकवच द्वारा सुरक्षित यह मानव अगाध अचित्खाड़ी में गिरने से बचा है,
जिसके मध्य यह प्राण और विचार सदैव गतिशील रहता है,
अभी तक इसे इन धूमिल भयानक बन्धनों को पार करना निषिद्ध है,
उनकी प्रहरी संरक्षक कालिमाएं मूक और भयंकरी हैं,
जिन्हें अधिकार है इस पंखविहीन अन्तरात्मा को
उच्च मन की और घोर अविद्या की सीमाओं में कैद रखने का,
पर वे सीमाएं इस दुहरी शाश्वतता को और रोक न सकीं
और अपनी घोर भूमिका त्याग लोप हो गयीं:
कभी जो सृष्टि का अर्थहीन फूला हुआ वृत्ताकार था,
उस वर्धित फूलते गोल शून्य ने अपनी दानवी परिधि खो दी।
The old adamantine vetoes stood no more:
Overpowered were earth and Nature’s obsolete rule;
The python coils of the restricting Law
Could not restrain the swift arisen God:
Abolished were the scripts of destiny.
रूढ़ि पुरातन वज्र कठोर निषेधाधिकार अब और खड़े न रह सके:
पार्थिव और अपरा-प्रकृति के जीर्ण शासन पर उसने विजय प्राप्त कर ली;
अवरोधक महाविधान के अजगरी कुण्डल
उस तीव्रता से उन्नत होते देवपुरुष को रोक नहीं सके:
नियति के लेख सब मिट गये थे।
There was no small death-hunted creature more,
No fragile form of being to preserve
From an all-swallowing Immensity.
अब वहां पर मृत्यु का शिकार कोई तुच्छ प्राणी नहीं था
सत्ता का कोई क्षणभंगुर आकार नहीं था
जिसे किसी एक सर्वभक्षी विराट्से सुरक्षित रखना था।
The great hammer-beats of a pent-up world-heart
Burst open the narrow dams that keep us safe
Against the forces of the universe.
एक अवरुद्ध विश्व हृदय की घन जैसी घोर धड़कनों ने
उन संकीर्ण बांधों को भंगकर खोल डाला जो हमें
ब्रह्माण्ड की ऊर्जाओं से सुरक्षित बचाकर बांधे रखते हैं।
The soul and cosmos faced as equal powers.
अब जीवात्मा और ब्रह्माण्ड समान शक्तियों-सम समक्ष खड़े थे।
A boundless being in a measureless Time
Invaded Nature with the infinite;
He saw unpathed, unwalled his titan scope.
एक असीम चैत्य-सत्ता ने एक अपरिमित त्रिकाल में
अनन्तता को साथ ले अपरा-प्रकृति को जीत लिया;
योगी नृप ने पथ-हीन, असीम, अनन्त महाविस्तार को देखा।
All was uncovered to his sealless eye.
उसकी मुक्त अन्तर्द़ृष्टि के समक्ष सब आवरणहीन खुला था।
A secret Nature stripped of her defence,
Once in a dreaded half-light formidable,
Overtaken in her mighty privacy
Lay bare to the burning splendour of his will.
कभी जो अस्पष्ट प्रकाश में दुर्जेय भयंकरी दिखती थी,
ऐसी एक गुह्य अपराप्रकृति निज सुरक्षा से वंचित,
अपने शक्तिशाली अन्तःपुर में आज पराजित
नग्न पड़ीथी, योगी के ज्वलंत भव्य संकल्प के सन्मुख।
In shadowy chambers lit by a strange sun
And opening hardly to hid mystic keys
Her perilous arcanes and hooded Powers
Confessed the advent of a mastering Mind
And bore the compulsion of a time-born gaze.
एक विचित्रसूर्यप्रकाश से आलोकित अन्धेरे छायापूर्ण कक्षों में
जो रहस्यमयी कुंजियों को छिपाये थे अति कठिनाई से खुलते,
अपरा-प्रकृति की खतरनाक गोपनीयताओं ने और प्रच्छन्न शक्तियों ने
प्रभुताशाली सत्य अति-मानस के अवतरण को स्वीकार लिया
और एक कालजात मानव की चितवन को विवश हो सह लिया।
Incalculable in their wizard modes,
Immediate and invincible in the act,
Her secret strengths native to greater worlds
Lifted above our needy limited scope,
The occult privilege of demigods
And the sure power-pattern of her cryptic signs,
Her diagrams of geometric force,
Her potencies of marvel-fraught design
Courted employment by an earth-nursed might.
अपनी मायावी रीतियों में गणनातीत,
अपने कार्य में तात्कालिक और अपराजित,
प्रकृति की गुप्त शक्तियां महत्तर लोकों की निवासी हैं
जो हमारी आवश्यकताओं के सीमित क्षेत्र के ऊर्ध्व में हैं,
वहां अर्ध-देवों के गुह्य विशेषाधिकार हैं
और उसके गुप्त संकेतों का निश्चित शक्तिशाली प्रतिमान है,
उसकी ज्यामितिक प्रतिभा के तेजस्वी रेखांकनों ने
उसकी चमत्कारी-योजना की क्षमताओं ने
एक पृथ्वी पर पोषित बली की प्रभुता स्वीकार ली।
A conscious Nature’s quick machinery[83]
Armed with a latent splendour of miracle
The prophet-passion of a seeing Mind,
And the lightning bareness of a free soul-force.
एक सचेत परा-प्रकृति का तत्पर यन्त्र
एक अव्यक्त चमत्कार की भव्यता से सज्जित,
एक द्रष्टा उच्च-मानस की पैगम्बरी उमंगसे पूर्ण
वह एक मुक्त आत्मबल की विद्युतीय प्रखरता से परिपूर्ण था।
All once impossible deemed could now become
A natural limb of possibility,
A new domain of normalcy supreme.
वह समस्त जो कभी असम्भव जैसा लगता था
अब सम्भावना का एक स्वाभाविक भाग बन गया था,
सर्वोत्तम का सामान्य क्षेत्र अब उसका एक नूतन क्षेत्र था।
An almighty occultist erects in space
This seeming outward world which tricks the sense;
He weaves his hidden threads of consciousness,
He builds bodies for his shapeless energy;
Out of the unformed and vacant Vast he has made
His sorcery of solid images,
His magic of formative number and design,
The fixed irrational links none can annul,
This criss-cross tangle of invisible laws;
His infallible rules, his covered processes,
Achieve unerringly an inexplicable
Creation where our error carves dead frames
Of knowledge for a living ignorance.
एक सर्वशक्तिशाली गुह्यतान्त्रिक विश्व-आकाश में स्थापित कर रच देता है
इस बहिर्संसार को जो हमारे इन्द्रीय बोध को माया सम दिखता है;
चेतना के अपने गुह्य सूत्रों को बुनता है,
वह अपनी आकारहीन ऊर्जा के लिए शरीरों को गढ़ता है;
उसने अनगढ़ रिक्त महा-विराट् से सृष्टि रची है
स्थूल प्रतिमाओं की अपनी माया की,
रचनात्मक संख्या और परिकल्पना के अपने जादू की,
उन अटल असंगत श्रृंखलाओं की जिन्हें कोई काट नहीं सकता है,
अद़ृश्य विधानों की आड़ी-तिरछी उलझनों की यह सृष्टि है;
अपने अमोघ नियमों से, अपनी गोपनीय पद्धतियों से,
वह एक अबोधगम्य सृष्टि के सर्जन में निश्चय ही सफल है
जहां हमारी भूल-भ्रान्ति एक जीवित संचालित अविद्या के अज्ञान को
ज्ञान के मृत चौखटों में गढ़कर सजा देती है।
In her mystery’s moods divorced from the Maker’s laws
She too as sovereignly creates her field,
Her will shaping the undetermined vasts,
Making a finite of infinity;
She too can make an order of her caprice,
As if her rash superb wagered to outvie
The veiled Creator’s cosmic secrecies.
प्रकृति देवी भी एक साम्राज्ञी समान एक-क्षेत्रता से अपने क्षेत्र में
सृष्टिकर्ता प्रभु के नियमों से परे हट निज रहस्यपूर्ण मनोभावों की रचना करती,
अपने संकल्प द्वारा अनिर्धारित शून्य विस्तारों को आकार देती,
नित्य को एक अनित्य आकार बना देती है;
वह भी अपनी माया के छल छन्द को एक व्यवस्था देती है,
मानों वह अपनी दुःसाहसी श्रेष्ठ चालबाजी द्वारा प्रतिस्पर्धा में
अव्यक्त परम सर्जनहार के ब्रह्माण्डीय रहस्यों से आगे निकल जाना चाहती है।
The rapid footsteps of her phantasy,
Amid whose falls wonders like flowers rise,
Are surer than reason, defter than device
And swifter than Imagination’s wings.
उसकी मनमौजी कल्पना के तीव्रता से बढ़ते चरण हैं,
जिनके तले चमत्कार पुष्पोंसमान विकसित होते हैं,
जो विवेक से अधिक सुनिश्चित, यन्त्र से अधिक निपुण हैं
और चरम-कल्पना के पंखों की अपेक्षा द्रुततर हैं।
All she new-fashions by the thought and word,
Compels all substance by her wand of Mind.
वह विचार और शब्द द्वारा सब नव-सर्जन करती है,
अपने उच्च-मानस की जादुई छड़ी द्वारा सब द्रव्यों को बाध्य कर देती है।
Mind is a mediator divinity:
Its powers can undo all Nature’s work:
Mind can suspend or change earth’s concrete law.
उच्च-मन देवत्व का एक मध्यस्थ हैः
इसकी शक्तियां समस्त अपरा-प्रकृति के कार्य को मिटा सकती हैः
उच्च-मन पृथ्वी के द़ृढ़ स्थूलजड़-विधान को स्थगित कर बदल सकता है।
Affranchised from earth-habit’s drowsy seal[84]
The leaden grip of Matter it can break;
Indifferent to the angry stare of Death,
It can immortalise a moment’s work:
A simple fiat of its thinking force,
The casual pressure of its slight assent
Can liberate the Energy dumb and pent
Within its chambers of mysterious trance:
It makes the body’s sleep a puissant arm,
Holds still the breath, the beatings of the heart,
While the unseen is found, the impossible done,
Communicates without means the unspoken thought;
It moves events by its bare silent will,
Acts at a distance without hands or feet.
पार्थिव स्वभाव की तामसिक निद्रा से मुक्त हो
जड़तत्त्व की भारी पकड़ को यह भंगकर सकता है;
यम की दाहक क्रोधितचितवन के प्रति उदासीन हो,
यह एक क्षणिक कार्य को अमरत्व प्रदान कर सकता है:
इसकी विचारशील शक्ति की एक सरल साधारण आज्ञप्ति,
इसकी लघु-स्वीकृति का एक सामान्य दबाव
बन्धन मुक्त कर सकता है मूक दिव्य ऊर्जा को
जो मन के कक्षों में गुह्य समाधि में दबी पड़ी है:
यह इस शरीर की निद्रा को एक सामर्थ्यशाली भुजा बना देती है,
इसके श्वास को स्थिर कर, ह्रदय की धड़कनें रोक देती है,
तब जब अगोचर मिलता है, असम्भव सिद्ध हो जाता है,
बिना किसी साधन के अनुच्चारित संकल्प को प्रेषित करती है;
अपने नग्न मूक संकल्प द्वारा घटनाओं का संचालन करती है,
बिना हाथ पांव के दूर से क्रियाशील हो कर्म करती है।
This giant Ignorance, this dwarfish Life
It can illumine with a prophet sight,
Invoke the bacchic rapture, the Fury’s goad,
In our body arouse the demon or the god,
Call in the Omniscient and Omnipotent,
Awake a forgotten Almightiness within.
इस विशाल घोर अविद्या को, इस बौने प्राणशक्ति के जीवन को
यह मनशक्ति एक क्रान्तद़ृष्टि से आलोकित कर सकती है,
अलौकिक हर्षोन्माद को, रौद्र प्रकोप को उभार सकती है,
हमारी देह में शैतान या देवता को उठा सकती है,
सर्वेश्वर या सर्वशक्तिमान् का अन्तर में आवाहन कर सकती है,
हमारे हृदयान्तर में एक विस्मृत सामर्थ्यशाली परमेश को जगा सकती है।
In its own plane a shining emperor,
Even in this rigid realm, Mind can be king:
The logic of its demigod Idea,
In the leap of a transitional moment brings
Surprises of creation never achieved
Even by Matter’s strange unconscious skill.
यह मानस अपने क्षेत्र में एक तेजस्वी प्रतापी सम्राट् है,
इस अनम्य जड़ राज्य में भी यह उच्चतम राजा बन सकता है:
इसके अर्धदेवत्व के विभाव का विवेकी-ज्ञान,
एक तत्कालीन परिवर्तन के एक सांक्रान्तिक क्षण में ले आता है
सृष्टि के आश्चर्यों को जो पहले कभी नहीं घटित हुए थे

All’s miracle here and can by miracle change.
इस क्षेत्र में सब चमत्कार है और चमत्कारी ढंग से परिवर्तित हो सकता है।
This is that secret Nature’s edge of might.
यही उस गुह्य परा-प्रकृति की सामर्थ्य की तीक्ष्णधार है।
On the margin of great immaterial planes,
In kingdoms of an untrammelled glory of force,
Where Mind is master of the life and form
And soul fulfils its thoughts by its own power,
She meditates upon mighty words and looks
On the unseen links that join the parted spheres.
Thence to the initiate who observes her laws
She brings the light of her mysterious realms:
Here where he stands, his feet on a prostrate world,[85]
His mind no more cast into Matter’s mould,
Over their bounds in spurts of splendid strength
She carries their magician processes
And the formulas of their stupendous speech,
Till heaven and hell become purveyors to earth
And the universe the slave of mortal will.
A mediatrix with veiled and nameless gods
Whose alien will touches our human life,
Imitating the World-Magician’s ways
She invents for her self-bound free will its grooves
And feigns for magic’s freaks a binding cause.
महान् अपार्थिव लोकों को सीमान्त रेखा पर,
परा-शक्ति के साम्राज्यों की एक स्वच्छन्द महिमा में,
जहां उच्च मन ही हमारे प्राण और देह का स्वामी है
और अन्तरात्मा इसके संकल्पों और विचारों को अपनी आत्मशक्ति से भर देती है
वह शक्तिशाली शब्दों पर ध्यान केन्द्रित करती है और देखती है
उन अगोचर श्रृंखलाओं को जो इन विभाजित क्षेत्रों को जोड़ती हैं
तब उस दीक्षार्थी को जो उसके नियमों का पालन करता है
प्रकृतिदेवी अपनी सत्ता के गुह्यराज्यों का प्रकाश लाकर देती है:
यहां जहां वह खड़ा होता है, उसके चरण तले संसार नमन करता है,
क्योंकि उसका मन अब जड़तत्त्व के सांचे में ढला हुआ नहीं रहता है,
उनकी मर्यादाओं के ऊपर अपनी भव्यशक्ति की फुहारों में
परा-प्रकृति उनकी चमत्कारी प्रक्रियाओं को चलाती रहती है
और उनकी विस्मयकारी वाणी के सूत्रों का प्रयोग करती है,
जब तक स्वर्ग और नरक पृथ्वी के रसद-दाता नहीं बन जाते
और यह जगत् मानव संकल्प का दास नहीं हो जाता
वह आच्छादित और अनामी देवताओं की एक माध्यम है
जिनके विजातीय संकल्प हमारे मानव-जीवन को स्पर्श करते हैं,
वह विश्व-मायापति के ढंगों एवं पद्धतियों की नकल कर
अपने आत्म-सीमित स्वच्छन्द स्वेच्छा के लिए इसके खांचों का संधान करती है
और जादुई सनकों को एक निश्चित कारण सम दिखाने का नाटक करती है।
All worlds she makes the partners of her deeds,
Accomplices of her mighty violence,
Her daring leaps into the impossible:
From every source she has taken her cunning means,
She draws from the free-love marriage of the planes
Elements for her creation’s tour-de-force:
A wonder-weft of knowledge incalculable,
A compendium of divine invention’s feats
She has combined to make the unreal true
Or liberate suppressed reality:
In her unhedged Circean wonderland
Pell-mell she shepherds her occult mightinesses;
Her mnemonics of the craft of the Infinite,
Jets of the screened subliminal’s caprice,
Tags of the gramarye of Inconscience,
Freedom of a sovereign Truth without a law,
Thoughts that were born in the immortals’ world,
Oracles that break out from behind the shrine,
Warnings from the daemonic inner voice
And peeps and lightning-leaps of prophecy
And intimations to the inner ear,
Abrupt interventions stark and absolute
And the superconscient’s unaccountable acts,
Have woven her balanced web of miracles
And the weird technique of her tremendous art.[86]

वह स्तरों के मुक्त प्रेम-मिलन विवाह से खींच लेती है
अपनी सृष्टि रचना हित आवश्यक ऊर्जा और तत्त्वों को:
गणनातीत ज्ञान का एक अद्भुत तानाबाना बुन लेती है,
दिव्य आविष्कार के करतलों का एक सार संग्रह एकत्र कर
उसने असत् को सत्य बनाने को मिश्रित कर दिया है
या दमित एवं बन्दिनी यथार्थता को मुक्त करने को आपस में मिला दिया है:
अपने असीम मायावी जादुई प्रदेश में
अपने गुह्य सामर्थ्यों को वह भेड़ समान लथर-पथर हांकती है;
परम-अविनाशी के शिल्प की उसकी पुरातन स्मृतियां,
गुप्त अवचेतना से फूटती मनमौजी तरंगों की फुहारों से,
घोर जड़-अचित् की तंत्र-मंत्र की ताबीजों का कालाजादू,
नियमहीन एक सत्ताधारी आदि-सत्य की स्वाधीनता से,
अमर देवों के लोक में उत्पन्न हुए आदि-विचारोंसे,
देवता की वेदी के पीछे से उदित हुए मान्त्रिक वाक्यों से,
अन्तर्निहित आत्मवाणी की चेतावनियों से
और भविष्यवाणी की झलकों और विद्युतीय चमकों से
और अन्तर श्रवण में सुनायी देती सूचनाओं से,
कठोर और निरंकुश आकस्मिक व्यवधानों
और परा चेतना के अनुत्तरदायी कर्मों से,
इसने अपने चमत्कारों का सन्तुलित जाल बुना है
और अपनी विकट भीषण कला का अनोखा विचित्र शिल्प रच दिया है।
This bizarre kingdom passed into his charge.
यह अटपटा साम्राज्य अब राजा के अधिकार में आ गया।
As one resisting more the more she loves,
Her great possessions and her power and law
She gave, compelled, with a reluctant joy;
Herself she gave for rapture and for use.
जैसे प्रियतमा प्रतिरोध करते प्रिय को और अधिक प्रेम करती है,
वैसे ही उसने एक अनिच्छा से भरे हर्ष से विवश हो
अपना समस्त विशाल अधिकार और अपना बल और विधान उसे सौंप दिया;
उसने स्वयं को भी योगी के सुख और उपयोग के लिए अर्पित कर दिया।
Absolved from aberrations in deep ways,
The ends she recovered for which she was made:
She turned against the evil she had helped
Her engined wrath, her invisible means to slay;
Her dangerous moods and arbitrary force
She surrendered to the service of the soul
And the control of a spiritual will.
विपथगामी गहनमार्गों से मुक्त होकर
उसने उन लक्ष्यों को पा लिया जिसके लिए वह बनी थी:
अब वह उस पाप दोष के विरुद्ध हो गयी जिसे कभी उसने पोषित किया था
वह उसके कोप का यन्त्र था, वध करने का उसका अद़ृश्य साधन था;
अपने विपत्तिदायक मनोभावों और निरंकुश ऊर्जा को
उसने उस आत्मपुरुष की सेवा हित समर्पित कर दिया
और एक आध्यात्मिक संकल्प का नियन्त्रण स्वीकार कर लिया।
A greater despot tamed her despotism.
एक महत्तर अधिपति ने उसकी निरंकुशता को वश में कर लिया।
Assailed, surprised in the fortress of her self,
Conquered by her own unexpected King,
Fulfilled and ransomed by her servitude,
She yielded in a vanquished ecstasy,
Her sealed hieratic wisdom forced from her,
Fragments of the mystery of omnipotence.
वह अपने आत्म-दुर्ग में इस आक्रमण से विस्मित थी,
अपने ही अप्रत्याशित अधिपति प्रभु के हाथों हार गयी,
कृतकृत्य हो और दासत्व पाकर वह मुक्ति का धन पा गयी थी,
एक भावविभोर सुख में डूब उसने स्वयं को मिटा दिया,
उसकी सील की हुई सीमित वायुरुद्ध प्रज्ञा उससे छीन ली गयी,
और सर्वशक्तिमत्ता की गुह्यआंशिकताएं भी ले ली गयीं।
A border sovereign is the occult Force.
यह गुह्य दैवी ऊर्जा एक सीमा-राज्य की स्वामिनी है।
A threshold guardian of the earth-scene’s Beyond,
She has canalised the outbreaks of the Gods
And cut through vistas of intuitive sight
A long road of shimmering discoveries.
यह स्थूल पार्थिव द़ृश्य से परे के परात्पर लोक की दहलीज का संरक्षण करती है,
वह परम देवों कीशक्तियों के अवतरण को श्रेणीबद्ध करती
और अन्तर्बोध में प्रकटाते मार्गों के द़ृश्य को मध्य से काट देती
जो झिलमिलाती सिद्धियों का एक दीर्घ मुख्य मार्ग है।
The worlds of a marvellous Unknown were near,
Behind her an ineffable Presence stood:
Her reign received their mystic influences,
Their lion-forces crouched beneath her feet;
The future sleeps unknown behind their doors.
एक अद्भुत परम अज्ञेय के लोक उसके समीप थे,
उस शक्ति के पीछे एक अनिर्वचनीय दिव्य उपस्थिति विराजमान थी:
उसका साम्राज्य उनके गुह्य प्रभावों को प्राप्त करता था,
उनकी सिंह शक्तियां इस दिव्यता के चरण तले झुकी पड़ी थीं;
उनके द्वारों के पीछे भविष्य की अज्ञात भावी सोती थी।
Abysms infernal gaped round the soul’s steps
And called to its mounting vision peaks divine:
An endless climb and adventure of the Idea
There tirelessly tempted the explorer mind
And countless voices visited the charmed ear;
A million figures passed and were seen no more.[87]
उस चैत्य सत्ता के कदमों के चहुं ओर नाटकीय खाड़ियां मुंह फाड़े थीं
और उसके आरोही द़ृश्य के दिव्य शिखरों को पुकारती थीं:
एक अनन्त चढ़ाई और दैवी-भाव की साहसी यात्रा
उसके गवेषक मन को अक्लांतता से प्रलोभित करतीं,
और असंख्य वाणियां, ध्वनियां उसके कानों को मोहित करतीं;
लाखों आकृतियां आती और निकल जातीं और पुनः कभी दिखायी नहीं देतीं।

Beginnings of the half-screened Invisible.
यह परमेश्वर के सहस्त्र परतों वाले भवन की ड्योढ़ी थी,
आधे छिपे अगोचर के परम धाम का आरम्भ था।
A magic porch of entry glimmering
Quivered in a penumbra of screened Light,
A court of the mystical traffic of the worlds,
A balcony and miraculous façade.
प्रवेश द्वार एक जादुई जगमगाता मण्डप
जो गोपित दिव्य ज्योति के आभामण्डल से कम्पित,
लोकों के रहस्यमय आवागमन का एक जनवासा,
एक मनोहर छज्जा और चमत्कारी पुरोभाग था।
Above her lightened high immensities;
All the unknown looked out from boundlessness:
It lodged upon an edge of hourless Time,
Gazing out of some everlasting Now,
Its shadows gleaming with the birth of gods,
Its bodies signalling the Bodiless,
Its foreheads glowing with the Oversoul,
Its forms projected from the Unknowable,
Its eyes dreaming of the Ineffable,
Its faces staring into eternity.
उस गुह्य शक्ति के ऊर्ध्व में ज्योतिर्मय उच्च विशालताएं प्रकाशमान;
सम्पूर्ण अज्ञात उस अनन्त असीमता से बाहर झांकता:
यह राज्य अकाल महाकाल के एक तट पर स्थित था,
किसी अनन्त सत्य-वर्तमान से बाहर द़ृष्टि गड़ाये देखता
इसकी छायाएं देवताओं के जन्मसे आलोकित,
इसकी देहें उस परम-अदेही की ओर संकेत करतीं,
इसके ललाट परमात्मा के तेज से दमकते
इसके आकार परम ज्ञेय को प्रकटाते,
इसके नेत्र अनिर्वचनीय परम का स्वप्न देखते,
इसके मुखमण्डल शाश्वतता में अवलोकते।
Life in him learned its huge subconscient rear;
The little fronts unlocked to the unseen Vasts:
Her gulfs stood nude, her far transcendences
Flamed in transparencies of crowded light.
योगी ने अपने जीवन की विशाल अवचेतन भूमिका को जान लिया;
जीवन के लघु अग्रभागों ने अपने अगोचर घोर विस्तारों को खोल दिया:
प्राण-प्रकृति की खाड़ियां आवरणहीन हो गयीं, उसकी सुदूर की परात्परताएं
घने प्रकाश समूह की पारदर्शिता में प्रज्वलित हो उठीं।
A giant order was discovered here
Of which the tassel and extended fringe
Are the scant stuff of our material lives.
अब इस लोक की यहां एक विराट् व्यवस्था प्रकट हो गयी,
उसी व्यवस्था के लटकते हुए फुंदने और झालर सम
लघु तत्त्व से यह हमारा भौतिक संसारी जीवन निर्मित है।
This overt universe whose figures hide
The secrets merged in superconscient light,
Wrote clear the letters of its glowing code:
A map of subtle signs surpassing thought
Was hung upon a wall of inmost mind.
यह प्रत्यक्ष विश्व जिसकी आकृतियां छिपाये हैं
उन रहस्यों को जो पराचेतना की ज्योति में निमज्जित हैं,
इसने अपना द्युतिमान सूत्र स्पष्ट अक्षरों में लिख दिया:
विचार मीमांसा से परे का सूक्ष्म संकेतों का एक नक्शा

Illumining the world’s concrete images
Into significant symbols by its gloss,
It offered to the intuitive exegete
Its reflex of the eternal Mystery.

सार्थक प्रतीकों में आलोकित कर दिया,
इसने अन्तर्बोधी भाष्यकार को सनातन दिव्य रहस्य का
और अपने अन्तर्भाव का प्रकाश निवेदित किया।
Ascending and descending twixt life’s poles
The seried kingdoms of the graded Law
Plunged from the Everlasting into Time,[88]
Then glad of a glory of multitudinous mind
And rich with life’s adventure and delight
And packed with the beauty of Matter’s shapes and hues
Climbed back from Time into undying Self,
Up a golden ladder carrying the Soul,
Tying with diamond threads the Spirit’s extremes.
जीवन ध्रुवों के मध्य चढ़ते और उतरते
श्रृंखला में जुड़े साम्राज्यों का यह क्रमनिर्धारित विधान
चिरन्तनता से आरम्भ हो त्रिकाल में आ डूबा था,
तब बहुगुणा मन कीयशस्विता से आनन्दित
और जीवन के साहस तथा सुख से समृद्ध
और पंचमहाभूत के रूपों औ’ रंगों की सुषमा से परिपूर्ण
यह दिक्काल से पुनः अमर स्वयंभू में चढ़ गया,
एक स्वर्ण सोपान से चढ़ता यह चैत्य सत्ता को, साथ ले गया,
इसने हीरक सूत्रों द्वारा जीवात्मा की चेतना के दो तटों को जोड़ दिया।
In this drop from consciousness to consciousness
Each leaned on the occult Inconscient’s power,
The fountain of its needed Ignorance,
Archmason of the limits by which it lives.
चेतना से चेतना के इस अधःपतन में
प्रत्येक स्तर अपनी गुह्य आदि अचित् महाशक्ति पर निर्भर रहता है,
इसकी अपनी अनिवार्य अविद्या का यही मूल स्रोत है,

Each lifted tops to That from which it came,

प्रत्येक स्तर ने अपने शिखरों को उस तत् सत् की ओर खोल दिया जो उसके उद़्गम हैं,
यह उसका जो वह कभी था सबका उद़्गम है
और आगे भविष्य में जो यह अभी भी बन सकता है उसका धाम है।
An organ scale of the Eternal’s acts,
Mounting to their climax in an endless Calm,
Paces of the many-visaged Wonderful,
Predestined stadia of the evolving Way,
Measures of the stature of the growing soul,
They interpreted existence to itself
And, mediating twixt the heights and deeps,
United the veiled married opposites
And linked creation to the Ineffable.
यह चिरन्तन के कार्यों की एक वीणा की सरगम है,
जो एक अनन्त परम-शान्ति में अपनी पराकाष्ठा की ओर आरोहण कर रही है,
बहुर्मुखी परम-आद़्भुत्य के ये स्तर विभिन्न स्वर-गतियां हैं
प्रगति करती दिव्य-कालपथ का पूर्वनिर्धारित मापित क्षेत्र है,
विकसनशील चैत्य-पुरुष की महत्ता का माप और स्तर हैं,
वे स्वयं अपने आत्मतत्त्व से अस्तित्व की परिभाषा करते हैं
और, ऊर्ध्वताओं और गहनताओं के मध्य मध्यस्थ बनते हैं
स्थूल-पट के पीछे छिपे गठबन्धित विरोधियों को एक कर देते
और सृष्टि को अनिर्वचनीय जगदीश्वर से जोड़ देते हैं।
A last high world was seen where all worlds meet;
In its summit gleam where Night is not nor Sleep,
The light began of the Trinity supreme.
अन्त में एक अन्तिम महर्लोक दिखायी दिया जहां सब लोक मिलते हैं;
इसके चरम शिखर की दीप्ति में जहां कालरात्रि और निद्रा का अस्तित्व नहीं है,
वहीं से परमेश्वर त्रिदेवों की परा ज्योति प्रारम्भ होती है।
All there discovered what it seeks for here.
जो यहां सब खोजा जाता है वहां सब प्रकट है।
It freed the finite into boundlessness
And rose into its own eternities.
इसने सान्त को असीमता में मुक्त कर दिया
और स्वयं अपनी आत्म-शाश्वतताओं में चढ़ गया।
The Inconscient found its heart of consciousness,
The idea and feeling groping in Ignorance
At last clutched passionately the body of Truth,
The music born in Matter’s silences
Plucked nude out of the Ineffable’s fathomlessness
The meaning it had held but could not voice;
The perfect rhythm now only sometimes dreamed[89]
An answer brought to the torn earth’s hungry need
Rending the night that had concealed the Unknown,
Giving to her her lost forgotten soul.
यहां चिर अचित् ने अपना सचेत हृदय पा लिया था,
जो विचार और भावना घोर अविद्या में टटोलते भटक रहे थे
अन्त में उन्होंने शाश्वत सत्य की देह को आवेगसे धर जकड़ लिया,
जड़तत्त्व की नीरवताओं में जो संगीत जन्मा था
अनिवर्चनीय परम की अतलताओं से जिसे आवरणहीन तोड़ लिया था
यह अर्थ से तो पूर्ण था किन्तु वाणी-हीन था,
किन्तु अब इसकी परिपूर्ण धुन जो केवल कभी स्वप्न में आती थी
धरा की बुभुक्षित आवश्यकता हित एक समाधान ले आयी
उसने उस रात्रि का अन्तर चीर दिया जिसमें अज्ञेय प्रभु छिपा था,
और उसे उसकी खोयी विस्मृत आत्म-सत्ता सौंप दी।
A grand solution closed the long impasse
In which the heights of mortal effort end.
इस एक श्रेष्ठ समाधान ने उस दीर्घ व्यवधान को हटा दिया
इसमें पहुंचकर मानवीय प्रयास की महत्ताओं का अन्त हो गया।
A reconciling Wisdom looked on life;
It took the striving undertones of mind
And took the confused refrain of human hopes
And made of them a sweet and happy call:
It lifted from an underground of pain
The inarticulate murmur of our lives
And found for it a sense illimitable.
एक सुसंगत सन्तोषदायी प्रज्ञादेवी ने जीवन को अवलोका;
इसने मानस के प्रयासरत गौण अपंग-स्वभाव को हाथ में ले लिया
और मानवीय आशाओं के संभ्रमित गीत की टेक उठा
उसे एक मधुर और प्रसन्न पुकार में बदल दिया;
हमारे जीवनों की अस्पष्ट कराहती ध्वनियों को
इसने पीड़ा के एक अन्तर्निहित भूगर्भ से ऊपर उठा लिया
और इनके लिए भी एक असीम अर्थबोध खोज डाला।
A mighty oneness its perpetual theme,
It caught the soul’s faint scattered utterances,
Read hardly twixt our lines of rigid thought
Or mid this drowse and coma on Matter’s breast
Heard like disjointed mutterings in sleep;
It grouped the golden links that they had lost
And showed to them their divine unity,
Saving from the error of divided self
The deep spiritual cry in all that is.
एक प्रबल एकत्व ही इसका अविराम सतत विषय है,
इसने आत्म-सत्ता के मन्द बिखरे उच्चारणों को समेट लिया,
जो हमारे कठोर रूढ़िविचार-श्रृंखला में अति कठिनाई से पढे़ जाते हैं
या तामसिक जड़तत्त्व की छाती पर हमारी आन्तरिक मूर्च्छा और तन्द्रा के मध्य
नींद में उठती अनर्गल बड़बड़ाहट सम सुनायी पड़ते हैं;

और उन्हें उनकी दिव्य एकात्मता का दर्शन करा दिया

All the great Words that toiled to express the One
Were lifted into an absoluteness of light,
An ever-burning Revelation’s fire
And the immortality of the eternal Voice.
उन सब महान् परम शब्दों को जो परमैकम् को प्रकट करने के प्रयास में जुटे थे
उन्हें आत्म-प्रकाश की एक परिपूर्णता में ऊपर उठा दिया गया,
एक सतत-प्रज्वलित दिव्य-दर्शन की अग्नि के प्रकाश में
और उन्हें शाश्वत देव-वाणी के अमरत्व में प्रकटा दिया।
There was no quarrel more of truth with truth;
The endless chapter of their differences,
Retold in light by an omniscient Scribe,
Travelled through difference towards unity,
Mind’s winding search lost every tinge of doubt
Led to its end by an all-seeing speech
That garbed the initial and original thought
With the finality of an ultimate phrase:
United were Time’s creative mood and tense
To the style and syntax of Identity.
वहां अब सत्य के साथ सत्य का कोई संघर्ष नहीं था;
उनके आपसी मतभेदों के उस अनन्त अध्याय को,
एक सर्वज्ञ आत्म-लिपिक द्वारा आत्म-ज्योति में पुनः पढ़ा,
अब वे विरोध के मध्य हो एकता की ओर यात्रा करते बढ़ते थे,
मनशक्ति की वक्रिल खोज ने शंका की प्रत्येक कडी़ मिटा दी थी
एक सर्वद्रष्टा वाणी ने उसे उसके लक्ष्य तक पहुंचा दिया,
जिसने उस आदि तथा मूल विचार को आकार देकर
इसे एक परम-सूत्र के सत्य निश्चय से सज्जित कर दिया:
त्रिकाल के सर्जनात्मक भाव और काल को
आत्म-तदात्मता की शैली और वाक्य रचना से जोड़ दिया।
A paean swelled from the lost musing deeps;[90]
An anthem pealed to the triune ecstasies,
A cry of the moments to the Immortal’s bliss.
लुप्त चिन्तनमग्न गहनताओंसे एक स्तुतिगान उदित हो ऊपर उठ आया;
आनन्दघन-त्रिदेवों के प्रति एक वन्दना झंकृत हो उठी,
मर्त्य-क्षणों की अमरानन्द के लिए एक पुकार गूंजी।
As if the strophes of a cosmic ode,
A hierarchy of climbing harmonies
Peopled with voices and with visages
Aspired in a crescendo of the Gods
From Matter’s abysses to the Spirit’s peaks.
मानों एक ब्रह्माण्डीय संगीत का प्रार्थना-गीत हो,
आरोहण करती स्वर संगति की एक परम्परा हो
जो सुरों और मुखड़ों से भरपूर
देवताओं कीओर एक समवेत-गान में अभीप्सा करती
घोर जड़-तत्त्व की खाड़ियों से परमात्मा के शिखरों पर चढ़ गयी।
Above were the Immortal’s changeless seats,
White chambers of dalliance with Eternity
And the stupendous gates of the Alone.
ऊर्ध्व में अमर देवों के विकारहीन आसन थे,
चिरन्तनता के साथ रमण हित शुभ्र धवल कक्ष थे
और परम कैवल्य धाम के भीमाकारी सिंहद्वार थे।
Across the unfolding of the seas of self
Appeared the deathless countries of the One.
आत्मा के सागरों के विस्तार के उस पार से
अद्वितीय परमैकम् के अमर धाम प्रकट हो उठे।
A many-miracled consciousness unrolled
Vast aim and process and unfettered norm,
A larger Nature’s great familiar roads.
एक बहुमुखी-चमत्कारी परम-चेतना ने खोलप्रकटा दिया
इसके महान् दिव्य लक्ष्य और प्रक्रिया और मुक्त मानक को,
एक महत्तर पराप्रकृति के महान् परिचित मार्गों को।
Affranchised from the net of earthly sense
Calm continents of potency were glimpsed;
Homelands of beauty shut to human eyes,
Half-seen at first through wonder’s gleaming lids,
Surprised the vision with felicity;
Sunbelts of knowledge, moonbelts of delight
Stretched out in an ecstasy of widenesses
Beyond our indigent corporeal range.
भौतिक इन्द्रिय-बोध के पाश से विमोचित हो
सिद्धि के शान्त महाद्वीप द़ृष्टिगोचर होने लगे;
सौन्दर्य के ऐसे धाम जिनके प्रति मानवीय नेत्र बन्द रहते हैं,
सर्वप्रथम वे आद़्भुत्य की चमकती पलकों द्वारा कुछ कुछ दिखे
इस प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन में उसे आनन्दानुभूति से चकित कर दिया;
ज्ञान की सूर्यरेखाएं, हर्षोल्लास की चन्द्रलेखाएं
एक आह्लादपूर्णविस्तारों में पसरी पड़ी थीं
ये हमारी दीनहीन भौतिक सीमा से परे थीं।
There he could enter, there awhile abide.
योगी वहां प्रवेश कर सका, कुछ काल विश्राम ले सका।
A voyager upon uncharted routes
Fronting the viewless danger of the Unknown,
Adventuring across enormous realms,
He broke into another Space and Time.[91]
किन्तु वह अमापित पथों का एक पथिक था
अज्ञेयपरम् के अद़ृश्य संकट का सामना कर,
महाकाय साम्राज्यों को शौर्य और साहस से पार कर,
वह एक दूसरे ही दिक्काल के लोक में प्रवेश कर गया।
