This sonnet was published in the Calcutta Review in October 1934. Two months earlier, Sri Aurobindo asked his secretary to type copies of this poem and three others (“The Other Earths”, “The World Game” and “Symbol Moon”) from the notebook in which they and others had been written.

Savitri briefly gives her own introduction and requests Satyavan to speak more about himself. She is enchanted by his words even as Satyavan unveils his inner being bearing the stamp of an inner royalty.
Yoga means union with the Divine, or for those who are afraid of the word, union with the eternal Perfection that is enclosed within and discloses itself over long unending Time. All creation is in fact a slow unfolding of this ‘Perfection’ that hides in our depths and as our seed and core, Source and Base. We search in through the events and experiences of our life, we seek through all our longings and hopes and aspirations. It is a slow and laborious process stretching through many centuries of earth-time and many lives lived in and experienced in different bodies, countries and climes.

Satyavan and Savitri are face to face with each other but a deeper heart has already been touched. Their soul has stepped out and seems to have recognized each other. Satyavan starts first and even as he speaks the first few words there is already a sense if intimacy and care that is being expressed.
What India needs most is not just a national reconstruction but a national yoga.

We are starting to serialize this unique biography of Sri Aurobindo, which was written in response to a request from The Mother, reviewed chapter by chapter by Nolini da, and translated by Andre Morisset for its bilingual publication at the Bulletin over the period of 10 years starting in 1960.
