At the Feet of The Mother
It is an historical fact to which we can no longer turn a blind eye that among the most passionate lovers and devoted servants of Mother India in the modern times, there have been only two who were Yogis, possessing the Yogic vision and intuition — Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo.
Aswapati has glimpsed this world of Bliss that is behind and beyond our sphere of sorrow. But no bridge exists between Earth and the Beyond. A rare individual souls can glimpse it in rare moments of Grace, but the doors of humanity as a whole are closed to this greater possibility.
... the wise have always been unwilling to limit man’s avenues towards God; they would not shut against his entry even the narrowest portal, the lowest and darkest postern, the humblest wicket-gate. Any name, any form, any symbol, any offering has been held to be sufficient if there is the consecration along with it
There is a psychic sorrow which usually comes when the soul feels how strong is the resistance in the vital and how much the Forces in it rage against the Mother, or when some similar feeling is in or behind the consciousness.
Life indeed is a magician builder as Sri Aurobindo puts it later in this passage. There is no end to the varieties of forms and energies and powers it brings forth into creation.
How I busy myself in vain and useless efforts pretending that I am doing God’s work! ... What a relief it is to be freed from the restless activity of the mind and the body, and to fall into the stillness of the soul! But all my efforts in this direction have failed again and again.

Did material substance exist before the descent of Divine Love?

I don’t think it could be said that there was a material substance.... I don’t know how to explain this to you. If there is a negation of something, it is truly the Inconscient, it is the negation of everything. It has not even the capacity of emptiness.
