The major portion of CWSA 18 is Sri Aurobindo’s commentary on the Kena Upanishad, which starts with the question what impels the thought towards its mark. This seemingly simple question takes us through an inner journey wherein we are told that not only is there a Cosmic Mind through which we can better understand the workings of our limited individual mind but also a Sight behind our ordinary capacity of vision and a subtle occult hearing behind the outer hearing. There is a Sense behind our sense that belongs to the conscious cosmic forces or the gods who are labouring to build an idealized humanity out of our first animal beginnings. But these gods are not the last word of our ascension. The gods and the cosmic powers derive their knowledge and power from the Eternal Lord. This is revealed to us through a parable of the gods and their victory. Man’s true business, his real purpose is to ascend out of his limited human existence into a higher and diviner life.
The Katha Upanishad reveals to us the secret of immortality through an interesting dialogue between a young boy Nachiketa and Yama, the god of Death.
The Mundaka Upanishad takes up as it’s subject the higher Knowledge, the knowledge of Brahman and the lower knowledge of the entire manifested worlds. Yet it takes it reveals to us the great secret that to truly know anything in its completeness one must first know the Origin, the Source or Brahman, knowing which all else can be known.
