Yes, the conception of gods evolves as the human consciousness evolves. New gods begin to appear on the horizon that were hidden earlier. The Vedic Indra, Agni, Brahmanaspati, Rudra all shift and undergo a change in their status as well as function with the evolution of consciousness. This is especially so after the advent of Sri Krishna in whose story we clearly see the Vedic gods Indra, Brahma and Agni all undergo a change while god Vishnu gains prominence. This change came in all the cultures and it stopped only after the new Religions completely eliminated the gods. In India their functions got modified. Instead of being powerful elemental energies they came to be rather seen as psychological forces, or cosmic deities that influenced our mind. It is the result of the evolution of human consciousness that has changed the relation of man with the deities.
