The goal is not merging into Parabrahman since as you rightly think that would be absurd.
The stir with which creation started is for the One to become Many. its purpose is to manifest the Infinity through countless sum of each unit. The mistake we make is that we get lost in the sense of being a separate unit. It is an appalling experience to imagine oneself alone and separate in a vast and complex universe. It is this that frightens many and makes people look for small little comfort zones or else to find a door way of escape out of the immensity.
But when we become aware that the Source is within us and we can be part of the Play, part of the Divine Manifestation that this creation is meant to be then we truly begin to play the game fully and with utter delight. Instead of escaping we discover that the goal is to turn this present imperfect manifestation into a perfect manifestation. It is imperfect only because the play of creation is not yet over, Man is only an intermediate species. That is why on the one side he is acutely aware of his imperfection while on the other hand he is also driven by a relentless pursuit towards a perfection that ever remains vague for his understanding and yet impels him to progress in different ways.
The goal therefore for man is to help in turning this imperfect manifestation or rather yet incomplete manifestation into a complete and perfect one. Of course if man refuses the original impulsion in creation that we witness here as the evolutionary force will still carry us beyond man. But it will be through crashing circumstances as with other species may be even wiping out of large sections of humanity, at least of that section which is uncaring about earth and perverse and living only for its little petty self. Nature will take it out of creation just as it has done with some other species that had become a threat to the earth and other creatures. On the other hand there will be few who will and are ready to collaborate. It is they who shall become the pioneers of the evolution next.
So our Goal is to manifest the veiled divine within us, to make life perfect with the divine Perfection, to transmute our earthly life into a Life Divine.
