At the Feet of The Mother

Sri Aurobindo’s experience in jail is similar to described in Bhagavad Gita [7:19], so what is new in His Yoga?

Yes, the experience of Sri Aurobindo in the Alipore Jail is very much the same as pointed out in the Bhagavad Gita as the rarest of rare. This rarest of rare realisation was, for Sri Aurobindo, the starting point of something much further.

To have a glimpse of the Supermind is one thing, to make that consciousness normal and natural, a permanent experience in the waking state is still another thing. But to establish that consciousness permanently upon earth so that it is the natural state of the divine super-humanity is still a further leap so far never envisaged. This is what integral Yoga is meant to carry us. And for whose sake Sri Aurobindo was doing all this tapasya even after the realisation of the highest point of the Gita, – in fact he took up the Yoga in real earnest to develop the integral Yoga after that, and all this for us human beings who don’t want to go further, who are too satisfied with reading the past experiences. That is another question.

To take an analogy we may say that it is one thing to glimpse the sun from a mountain summit, quite another to reach it, and most importantly to find ways and means to establish the solar energy as a normal working principle here for all our energy needs. I hope this analogy makes it clear.
