Meditations on Peace 1

Peace is the first thing that one needs to lead a spiritual life. It is the first fundamental basis, the foundational stone, the indispensable ground for all the rest to develop. Without this stable ground of Peace, all that comes remains shaky, spilling out from our being like water from a tumbler that is held in trembling hands. Its necessity is being increasingly felt in the hectic life of modern man. He seeks some respite from the speed and rumour and seeks to withdraw into some mountain retreat or an Ashram monastery. Or he seeks to learn some breathing technique or method of meditation to snatch few moments of peace amidst the hustle and bustle of life. These help no doubt but only for a while. For Peace to be real and lasting and enduring, it must be found right here, within and around us, in the crowd and tramp of life, behind the din and noise, behind the clamour and the glamour. It can indeed be found anywhere and in everywhere since Peace is not only an attribute and aspect of the Divine, it is the very sign of the Divine Presence. And since the Divine is everywhere and in everything so too we can discover Peace everywhere and in everything.
