At the Feet of The Mother

If Matrimandir is meant to be free from religions and their symbols, why the crystal is held by hexagrams?

The hexagrams are representations of Sri Aurobindo’s symbol and the circle with petals is the Mother’s symbol. Going beyond religions does not mean going towards some formless Reality beyond form and name. It means going beyond the conventional and religious conceptions of God that limit the Infinite through one particular form and name while often discarding others. It means not to limit the limitless through limited beliefs and particular rituals that all must follow.

Sri Aurobindo’s and the Mother’s symbol, on the other hand, are representative of certain universal truths such as man’s quest for perfection and the Divine response that can together build a new creation with the help of the incarnate Divine or the Divine sacrifice in Matter. The Mother’s symbol is simply a top-down view of the lotus with the Divine Mother at the core whose Presence allows the new creation to unfold, which is what Auroville is all about. The ray of Light from above is the mediating Light and Power of the Divine Sun above whose unseen Presence moulds the oblivious clay.

It is understandable that humanity is at once fascinated as well as suspicious. It is fascinated by the new possibility of divinising man but also suspicious and doubts it preferring the old world over the new. Yet the Mother declared:

“A new world, based on Truth and refusing the old slavery to falsehood, wants to take birth. In all countries there are people who know it, at least feel it. To them we call:
‘Will you collaborate?’
Many of the people engaged in Auroville are those who have heard the call.”
