At the Feet of The Mother

How Psychic Being relates to manomaya and vigyanmaya koshas in Vedantic tradition?

The manomaya and vijnamaya and in fact all the other koshas are just different bodies. The psychic being is meant to be the resident.

Right now it resides in the Manomaya kosha primarily. In times to come it will be able to reside in the Supramental kosha which is the real meaning of vijnamaya. Though more modern commentators speak of the vijnamaya as the intellect. But intellect is part of the mind and it’s operations. It is a faculty and not even a kosha.

There is not much mention of the psychic being in the traditional Vedantic literature except passingly in the Katha Upanishad and the Shwetashvatar, couple of places elsewhere. It is called as the angusthmatra purusha seated in the heart. The Vedic description of the deathless immortal flame and of the swan are some hints and description of the psychic being. There is of course the general word antaratma or jivatma but in Sri Aurobindo’s yoga the jivatma itself has two aspects, one that remains above the cosmic play as the central being and, the other, which descends into the play and passes through successive births and deaths to develop into the psychic being, chaitya purusha.
