How people could be motivated to do noble acts without reward and punishment?

By reward and punishment, I meant what is generally considered as such. That is to say a good man would become rich and succeed in all his endeavours or an evil man will loose and fail. This is a childish representation of something much more profound. In fact, doing good and noble deeds for rewards or fear would hardly be considered good since the motive is poor. Goodness is its own reward. It increases the force of goodness in us and thereby helps us grow into truly upright and noble human beings. Besides a person living his life with goodness and nobility is inwardly at peace and joy. He feels his life supported within even though the outer circumstances are unfavourable or even adverse. In other words, the reward of nobility and goodness is a growth of consciousness, evolution of the soul towards light and beauty and harmony and love. These things are of true and lasting values. On the other hand, a doer of evil deeds may outwardly succeed and be rich but he will live in inner misery, in agitation and fear, excitement and anger, anxieties and unhappiness, doubts and suspicion. His life will be full of wants even though he may have many things. He will always crave for more and hence live a life of restless dissatisfaction. This is the law of karma, a wheel meant to carry us forward on the pathways of Dharma by teaching and training us how to live truly. This training is not through outer rewards but inner experiences that are never forgotten and get embedded in our soul-life.
