At the Feet of The Mother

Can silence and speech go together?

Silence is the basis of all creation, new and old. It is the secret base and support of the dance of the Infinite in finiteness, the play of the eternal in terms of time, the endless stretching into Space of That which is beyond Space and Time.

Now to man’s divided experience Silence and Speech are seen and felt as opposites, but as we find powerfully in Sri Aurobindo’s life, in the New Creation they will be wedded together, speech flowing from the heart of silence and pointing back the routes to the home of Truth. In the New Creation the antagonism between stillness and the rhythms of creation will not be lost but mutually fulfil nor the division between will and knowledge maim the strength and simple leaping of truth in word and speech and act. even the commonest actions will well from this deeper core of oneness, living and infinite.

Also, as Sri Aurobindo points out in the Uttarpara Speech, even what we think right now in our state of duality as opposing God’s plan will end up hastening the advent of Truth. It will turn things evil towards their secret truth. True it is a new creation does not happen by thought and speech but a New Thought and Speech can express this new dawn as indeed we see beautifully in the life of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, a speech armed with the golden light of truth and burdened with delight, so to say.
