Where is Divine Justice in the Life of Humanity?

. Justice implies two things. Its first purpose is to punish the evil-doer and protect the righteous and good. Its second purpose that derives from the first is to maintain the balance of creation so that the general consciousness of humanity does not sink below in such a dangerous way that a wholesale or mass destruction remains the only way left to restore the lost balance.

When we think of this in human terms we can only think of physical and material rewards and punishments since we value these alone and our vision is limited only to these things. But the Divine Vision sees much more. It lets a man grow rich through foul means and exploitation of the poor. But a price is extracted in this process. He becomes more and more entrenched in darkness and falsehood thereby cutting himself more and more from the natural joy of life. Then to get back that lost joy he tries lot of artificial means such as parties, drugs, lustful activities and grabbing of political power. The more he does so he is more and more cut off from the Divine Presence within and the joy and peace and happiness that comes from It. Now unless there is a course correction due to some shock or Divine Grace, he finds himself more and more surrounded by flatterers and loses the joy that friends and family can give. Finally, he dies in a state of fear and anxiety and worry over losing all that he has unjustly amassed. Of course, he dies with a lot of money in his wallet but a big hole in his heart, loveless though surrounded with selfish men who are after his wealth and position. As if this is not enough, since he misused the gifts of Nature given to him, he returns in a miserable birth deprived of all that he misused to resume his further journey under much more difficult conditions. I am not saying that it happens exactly like this but there is a truth in the idea that there is no greater punishment than to wander away from our divine core, to lose one’s natural joy, to live in a state of obscurity and inner darkness, cut off from all true light and peace and joy.

We are unable to see this larger picture because our eyes scan only the surfaces and can see life only in small sections of Time. Therefore, we ignorantly believe that a king of a politician who has amassed wealth and power by unjust means is fortunate whereas the seeming ordinary not so rich person who lives with modest income, a life of piety and goodness is not so fortunate. But this is an error of the senses. Kansa, the king of Mathura suffered in his royal palace while the commoners of Vrindavan rejoiced dancing with Krishna. Duryodhana suffered with jealousy and ambition and anger and suicidal thoughts as the king of Hastinapur, the most powerful and influential Kingdom of those times. On the other hand, the Pandavas grew through the ordeals in the forest and have become an ideal for men to follow. Such are the strange ways of Divine justice, strange and mysterious to our superficial vision, but perfectly rational and legit to a deeper and comprehensive view of things.

Humanity at the Crossroads: Destruction or a New Creation (13)

It would mean that the evolutionary line of different types of humanity may not proceed along the same line or the same pace. The differentiation will then automatically arise at some point especially because human beings live primarily in the mind. And since the Mind’s operating system is through comparison and contrast, that is to say division, a mentally developed humanity runs the great risk of exaggerating these differences and turning them into a struggle for existence, not between humans and other species but within the species itself, intraspecies so to say.

Sweet and infinite Mother, Mother Divine, Maa, human life is indeed a battle and a pilgrimage. Maa, be with us in this journey of life, terrible and sweet, dangerous and delightful. Be with us as the Protector and Guide. But also prepare us, Maa, to be the perfect instruments of Thy Will, Thy hero-warriors of the Light, Thy spearheads of Truth, Thy workers and servitors in the great unfolding and the forward march of Time.

Maa, the fate of earth and humanity is being decisively decided in this Age. It is a formidable battle within and without. Maa, may we flinch not from any effort needed for Thy Victory. Maa, accept and sanctify and bless the sacrifice of our ego and desires so that all in us may be entirely aligned with Thy Will and obedient to Thy Law.

Maa, may all we have and all we do and all we are be for Thee, for Thy Work and Thy Service, for the fulfilment of Thy Will, for the joy of Thy Love.

Is there a written rule by Sri Aurobindo or the Mother against doing a puja or seva in a temple?

There are no such rules and dos and don’ts to be rigidly followed by one and all. Such dogmatic rules turn even a high spiritual into a narrow religion and must be avoided. It is one thing to say that these rituals may not be needed and there are better ways of doing the same thing (helping the departed for example) by praying to the Divine in the original temple which is in our very heart. However, each one is free to follow their way. If one feels the necessity of going to temples and praying there i don’t see why it should be stopped.  All spiritual beings and mystics have affirmed that the Divine is within us and it is here, above all that we must find Him. All else can be either a preparation or a natural extension of our inner realization.  But not all are in the same stage of evolution.  Some need the temple outside,  some don’t and each must be free to follow and discover the truth in his own freedom.

Humanity at the Crossroads: Destruction or a New Creation (12)

The distinction between different layers of humanity from an evolutionary perspective can be countered by saying that all this has flattered out through the millenniums as man has wandered through the ages, mated and cross-mated leading to the blurring of distinctions. It is a very valid criticism and a truth we need to take into account. It is difficult to segregate humanity into distinct types now especially with free movement around the world. At the same time, it cannot be denied that there are indeed different types of humanity, if not distinct. We can even do away with the hierarchical arrangements as it breeds racism. But we cannot deny the simple fact that stares at our eyes that not only the genotype and phenotype are different but also psychological types.

Sweet and infinite Mother, Mother Divine, Maa, come, O radiant and luminous Mother, scatter all darkness. Dispel all doubts and fears that hang upon the mind of man. Free our hearts from the clutch of the Asuras that tries to defile Thy temple with hate and anger and bitterness.

Maa, stream forth into our life with Thy conquering Force slaying the asura of lust and greed. May the path be cleared for The Lord to come and occupy us turning the very body into a footstool for Thy action, the hands and feet and speech into tools for Thy action, the senses into gateways for Thy beauty and delight concealed behind appearances.

Maa, come, turn our heart and soul into Thy chamber and shrine; our body and life into an instrument for Thy Service alone.

What rituals do we need to give our children?

Both boys and girls should be given the sanskaras, not only through rituals but by the living example of parents as well as explaining them when children grow up to question and are ready to reason out. The role of parental influence and of the social milieu cannot be underestimated. Unfortunately, most parents are too busy, almost obsessed with marks and percentage and careers to fulfil ambitions to give importance to character building and inculcating noble qualities which is the essence of all sanskaras.

Humanity at the Crossroads: Destruction or a New Creation (11)

These two types of humanity are distinguished mainly by whether they operate from the heart or the head. There is of course a layer of humanity that antedates both. This earlier layer of humanity lives by the vital push albeit distorted by the intrusion of the mind and the edge it provides. In other words, there is not one layer of humanity but quite a few, at least two or three distinct evolutionary layers, if not more.

Songs of the Soul: October 14, 2026

Sweet and infinite Mother, Mother Divine, Maa, during this time of the year, we the children of India invite and welcome you to the places of our stay. Maa, this time, this very special year we invite You to our hearts as The Divine Mother herself, not in one or the other aspects of Thee, each beautiful in its own way, but Thee, Thyself.

Maa, Thou art the sovereign above all, the Origin and the Fount of creation, the Mother of all that has come into existence and is yet to come. Maa, Thou art the secret Delight that weds all things in a marvelous and harmonious embrace, the Wisdom that works in the heart of Time, the Force that moves and governs even the Gods, Devatma Shakti, the Supreme Power for which nothing is impossible. Mother Divine, Thou art the ever unfolding miracle of life, the Master-builder of all that comes into existence, the golden eternal womb of everything.

Maa, in Thee are joined the Nameless One and the Name, in Thee are united the Manifest and the Unmanifest, in Thee the rhythms of Time and the Timeless become one.

Maa, make us worthy of Thy Grace, make us ready for receiving Thy Love, make us Thy strong and beautiful channels for Thy Work upon earth.
