This is a small garland of poems offered at the feet
of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother as an expression of gratitude.
If they can inspire a few it will be an added bonus.
Om MotherSriAurobindo is my refuge.
Om MotherSriAurobindo is my refuge.
Om MotherSriAurobindo is my refuge.
A Prayer… to Her
Grant us, O! Mother Divine
Constancy in will and strength sublime Thy children
struggle and wrestle with Time.
Grant us, O! Mother Divine
Lives unnumbered offered to Light
Till darkness perishes and slain is the Night.
Grant us, O! Mother Divine
My heart be Thy temple and shrine
Pour upon my earth Thy ecstasies wine.
A Thousand Times
A Thousand times shall I return
To be Thy clay, O Master- Hand!
Till Thou hast moulded every grain
of dust into the Perfect Urn.
A thousand times shall I return
From distant lands of sheltering sun,
Till all the earths and all the skies
In a golden joyous Fire burn.
A thousand times shall I return
To sing Thy name, O Secret One!
Till all Thy sweetness wakes in men
And all Thy timeless toil is done.
A thousand times shall I return
Till Truth and Bliss for earth is won
And all that was life’s native right God,
Freedom, Unity reign in might.
Whither Earth?
Alluring are the gifts of the world
Glory and riches, heaven and earth
If all this has to end in death
What is the purpose of this all?
Life and children, faces sweet
Brilliant minds and hearts that greet
Beauty and strength, the life’s conceit
What is the purpose of this all?
Flowers and winds and moon and sky
The myriad stars that spray the night
The birds that sing, the rays that spy
What is the purpose of this all?
If all we did and dreamt and hoped
Is a helpless gland that stirred and doped
deceived our hearing, fooled our sight
What is the purpose of this all?
The arms that save, the hands that strike
The anguish deep, the joys of life
If all us blind, indifferent, void
What is the purpose of this all?
The labour of worlds, the ages’ toil
High compassion, the prophet’s voice
Saints and Kings and Sinners alike
What is the purpose of this all?
The martyr’s will, heroic and grand
Science and arts and words sublime
Rainbow hopes and notes that blend
What is the purpose of this all?
If no high goal in Cosmic scheme
Pursues our soul and haunts our will
If extinction is the sole release
What is the meaning of this all!
An Experience
Love, Supreme! my heart overleaps
The hold of time and mortal bounds
Thy sweetness pours from all around
Filling my moments with eternity.
Silent and unseen by human eyes
you enter the heart, my sense surprise
To feel Thy presence in all that denies
In every touch Thy ecstasy.
All thought lies mute, hushed fulfilled
In Silence grows Thy Immensity.
Shiva, – The Ascetic
He sits on summits pure and high
Oblivious to worlds that weep and cry
Indifferent, cold, impersonal, Alone,
Is He where our souls find last respite!
His calm immensity no grief can stare
A passionless face no joy can ensnare
Untouched by a world that vainly lives
And loves awhile to fade and die.
He sits trance-held, aloof and bare
A single Soul, alone and sheer
No space can hold, no vision describe
Above the bounds of fate and Time.
Descend on earth, O! god austere
Thy calm, we need, thy presence here.
Shiva, – The Nataraj
Now he wakes in rapt delight
His gaze beholds the world – Mother’s sight
And gathers Space in a single look
All Time becomes his endless scribe.
The worlds arise by his rhythmic dance
His footsteps wipe all error and chance
His drum beats thrill the suns and moon
Withheld from fall by his mighty glance.
Our pain and grief he takes for food
Sends down his strength to worlds that brood
And plucks the thorn in nature’s breast
The two unite in rapturous mood.
The slayer of Kama wakes to Love
The happy hour of gods Above!
The Earth’s Touch
O! rejoicer in mystery’s Beyond
Hidden in salvation’s luminous mask
Whence thou forgot the sadder notes
Of earth unsung by Heaven’s bard.
O! thou, absorbed in solitary bliss
of soul-silences, mute and free
Thy fallen nature left behind
To suffer the pang and pain-divine.
If this is thy soul’s high goal
Vain is thy aim and vain this birth
Vain the fall of soul in time’s abyss,
Aimless the endless journeying of earth.
Where is thy strong embrace and kiss
Thy seal of love on Nature’s lips.
Bride of The Light
Bride of the Light enter our life,
in all thy fullness and power
Make of this earth a temple and shrine,
kindle the sacred fire
Flame of rapture, sweetness and love, goal
of our heart’s desire
Smite our life with the Immortal’s touch
shedding its dark attire.
Strength of God, light up our path,
lead us higher and higher
Tear the grey inhibitions of brain,
our minds with Truth inspire
Child of Eternal, pristine and pure,
Heaven’s unfading flower
Bloom in thy fullness and beauty and bliss,
release us from death and desire.
O! mystic jewel in the heart of time,
shine in our being forever
Diamond hidden in our ruby depths
rich with gold and sapphire
Master of all our sufferings and joys,
step out in front and conquer
King of Nature, it’s source and fount,
wide extend Thy empire.
Knower of the secret sunlit path
to thee we turn and aspire
Offer our self and nature to God,
make us His serf entire.
Make Me Thy….
Make me Thy lamp, Thy sword and Thy lyre
O Lord of the worlds, O Heavenly Fire!
To be Thy slave is all I ask
Thy tool to fashion stone and clay
In shapes of gods; my only task
To be a comrade in Thy play.
Let me be Thy heart of ruth
To heal the sob of cosmic pain;
Thy light that leads, O luminous Truth
In darkness, misery and disdain.
Mother of Might Thy strength I seek
For the struggling soul of man on earth;
Thy seal of Love on abysses deep
To lift towards a greater birth.
The Mountain
Hills of Silence, our soul’s retreat
Upon thy summits, my spirit shall meet
The gods that hide from mortal sight
The forms divine, my eyes to greet.
Peaks austere, bare and nude
Void of wants, high, absolute
A grandeur sporting with the sky
Where dwells the One in Solitude.
Symbol of purity, intense, sublime
Beyond thy tops my soul shall rise
To seek the dance and rhythm of God
To seek the Lord, the song divine.
O! mountains desolate, vast and high
I come to match myself with thine.
Thoughts
Thoughts beyond thoughts mount and climb
Luminous, pure, glad, sublime;
Like flames that rise from a sacred fire
Like pilgrim’s march to a secret shrine.
Like flowers that bloom in moonlit night
Thrilling the air with sweet delight
Like rays of splendour raining at dawn
Waking the heart to a song of life.
Like peace that grows in hearts made wide
And beauty throbbing ungarbed in light
Like a ray of hope that leaps from the soul
To seize the truth still veiled to sight.
Like Silence enriched by word and sound
Pouring from heights where Truth abounds.
Divine Mathematics
World is zero, God is one
One is He, two is me
Three is holy trinity
Four is perfect perfection
The roots of mystic Ashwattha tree
Five is Blissful Beauty Love
Six, the Force of Divinity
Seven, home of Truth above
Eight our secret mystery
Nine is world discovering
Ten is earthly destiny
God and world in clasp of Love
World as zero, God as One.
Meditation
All is dissolved, save ‘the One’ alone
A sea of silence stills the whole
A hush that holds the highest thought
A womb, the secret birth of all.
A static peace, intense and wide
A witness soul regarding life
And world, a passing shadowy stream
A twilight state of waking dream.
A Presence is felt eternal divine
By an inward sense awake sublime
A joy and Love from a distant land
Inspires the soul to a godlike climb
A touch of Heaven upon our earth
The prescience of a greater birth.
God
His smile and sweetness
Spreads through myriad stars
His song of Silence
Holds the vacant space.
His Beauty breaks and
Shines in tiny flowers
His laughter leads
The burdened pace of age.
His Love abounds
In fiercest pangs of pain
His Power peeps
Through frailest form and face.
His knowledge sinks
In countless struggling world
His Light in every
Darkened space prevails.
In death, He lives
In gulfs resounds
In failure glows
His victory’s crown.
And when we feel Him distant far
He softly speaks within our heart.
How Long…
How long before the dawn arrives
And night responds to the rapture of sun
A mightier breath upheaves our human life
And love divine ensnare our human heart.
How long before the restless minds
Discover peace and sweet repose;
Our earthly nature wakes to divinity’s touch
And finds in life the flaming deathless rose.
How long shall this dark rendezvous last
How long shall grief from earth not part
And darkness nurse in her dangerous womb
The seed of light, the flame of love.
How long shall children of dark and night
Hold to ransom the imprisoned delight
And throw as stake in the game of life
The waiting dawns and noons of Light.
I Have Felt…
I have felt Thy breath
in tempest and in storm.
I have met Thy glance
in earthly figures and form.
I have felt Thy touch
in every shattering blow.
In darkest corners seen
Thy ray of Light aglow.
I have heard Thy voice
In babbles of a child.
In noisy streets and room
Have sensed Thy Silence grow.
My heart has known
Thy love in struggle and pain
And in my nerves and vein
Thy mystic sweetness flows.
Mystic Union
Beyond the reach of Time and Space
I find a deathless golden face.
His call I hear, His joy I bear
My soul is drawn to his mystic ways.
His love becomes my heart and finds
The world no more an ugly maze.
My life released from death and pain
By a glance from this immortal gaze.
My mind a vastness tranquil grows
I lose myself’ in His embrace.
The Earth Aspires…
Whirling in the deeps of cosmic space
Journeying through endless nights and days
Labours by the burden of it’s hidden delight
The earth aspires for God’s deathless light.
India, – A Prayer
From the obscure dark that rules this land
From the hideous grip of asura’s hand
O! Lord from this nightmare and this sleep
Let India, to its mission awake, and leap.
The Script of Time
‘The moving finger having writ’
Moves on to write a greater script
Not death, nor fate, nor our heart’s desire
Can alter that Timeless, Undying Will.
Who says that Earth is born for pain,
And all our dreams astir in vain
And death and dust the end of life
No greater song for soul of man!
But man and thought are silver links
To join the earth with heaven’s strings
The touch that can transmute our life
of mire and dust to golden things.
More awaits than man can dream
He sees but a distant flickering gleam.
The lights draw near that never fade
To bring for earth a purer stream.
Mind in Nirvana
A vast impersonal gathered all
All shapes appeared a dream of form
All sounds absorbed in silent depth
A peace emerged, enlarged, endured.
The passion’s play was swept aside
A void was felt in a heart grown wide.
The thoughts released from restless rounds
Reposed above the thinking mind.
The breath became a subtler flow
A light was felt, a face aglow
And in that tranquil, luminous peace
All moved with a marvellous rhythm and ease.
Annulment! – No; Fulfilment.
Vain are the countless things that lure
Vain are the heights of heaven azure
Vain is the world and vain is all
If I am not in Thee secure.
O! Marvel of the marvellous One
Beauty brilliant bright and pure
Cut asunder all my strings
And to Thy Golden yoke ensure.
When wisdom fails and knowledge gropes
And all our seekings fail to endure
When all the worlds just count to naught
O! Lord to me Thy Love ensure.
If all be lost and all be burnt
Yet my faith in Thee grow more
Take all that I call myself
Let Thy presence enshrine in my core.
Krishna
O krishna just for a while
Let me indulge with Thee
In the stream paradise of Vrindavan.
Let me hear Thy enchanting flute
Ensnared by it’s call and rhythm
Let all my passions flow to Thee.
Let me, O! Beautiful One,
Feel Thy clasp, Thy lovely hands
As a lover locked in Thy embrace
For a moment in eternity.
Let me, O! Beloved sweet
Taste the nectar of Thy lips,-
I long to kiss.
And feel Thy Body of Light and Bliss
O Krishna, my Krishna, Krishna
Let me, for once, and forever
Be lost in Thy blue deeps.
Limericks
There was once a city
whose name was absurdity
There wisdom was measured by degrees
And dress was the sign of dignity!
There was a barrister
whose deeds were sinister
By his words of magic and brilliance of logic
He could prove a miss to be a mister!
There was once a king
who of truth knew nothing
He made a few rules
To be obeyed by fools
To oppose them was taken for sinning!
There was an ill-famed healer
An agent of death and of terror
Each illness he cured
he created few more
The minds he injected with fear and horror!
There was once a scientist
Whose name was ‘I know it’
He knew or he knew not
But he always forgot
That there is no end to knowledge!

And a robust health.

Our souls the explorer and God the Master-Key.
Life is entertainment
When work becomes play and progress attainment.
Life has obstacles
Never mind, go ahead and conquer the hurdles.

But God is our safety,
Faith the conqueror.
Life is a gymnasium
Where falls can be graceful if we know how to leap up.
Life is a mountain climb
Through rough hills and tough slopes
To peaks sublime.
Life is a story
Through deeds and through thoughts
We write our history.
Life is a mystery
We are here to find out
With the light of sincerity.
Life is beautiful
When we are empty of desires
Our hearts with love full.
Life is a secret
Only God can reveal us
Its truth is so great.
Life is a dream
But a dream that God has woven
From Reality’s gleam.
Life is a painting
Where shadows are used by Nature for shading.
Life is a sleep
After the struggle we enter His silent deeps.
Life is Bliss
When we have heard God’s call and
woken to His kiss.
O Beautiful One
O beautiful one
God must have created you in some special moment
Your heart suffused with that glow
Of truth crystalline. A ray of Intuition
Shields you from wrong-doing
And Courage feminine,
Guards the doors to your inner being.
Love in your heart, gentle and deep
Runs like a silent stream
Girdling an austere peak.
Solid snow-white substance filled
Soothing and sweet to drink.
O diamond hearted soul of courage and love
What magic and marvel built thy soul
Wrapped in nature’s turbulent mood
And passions high and anguished breath
Only the strong and deep can bear and keep
Even as the gods hide their Might
In folds of subdued Light…..
Refusing to bow before Fate
Refusing the easier way
O Spirit of freedom and pride
Would you not walk with me
And sport awhile with Shiva
In his solitude on peaks austere,
Grand and majestic, sublime, divine!
O soul of beauty and love
Come let us dance together
In the fields of Vrindavan
Tuning our steps to Krishna’s Feet.
Come let us walk together
The difficult yet delightful path
Filling the world with radiance of Love
The secret rhythms of Her Bliss.
Until Death do us part…..
Or even defy the gates of Death
Can those he part who have grown one
In being and heart, one soul within?
Have we not played this game before?
Now we depart and now return
In bodies that sum up the drift of many births….
Divided by Time, separated by Space
Now we shall loose, now find again, and love
Moved by fate and the stars above
We shall walk again this earth
Holding our hands facing the great enigma called life.
Tell me my dearest one would you not recognize me
In another body, another name?
Would you not know me with a single glance
And I know the same flame-soul in your eyes, your smile
The soul of courage and love I have sought Through the centuries!
Tell me, O beautiful one
Would you walk with me on the wide roads of Time,
On the fire-strewn paths of Love,
Serving God’s purpose beneath the stars!
Until all is done for which the earth was made
For which our souls leaped into birth!
O! Mortal Happiness
O! mortal happiness,
Thy frail and fugitive feet
Deceivingly sweet
Men’s heart so amorous grow
Thy brief visits, and briefer stay
Men long by night and day
If only they knew thy heart of pain
The enormous loss, and momentary gain
The weakening of flesh
Caught by the alluring mesh
We weave around our souls
Forgetful of life’s enormous goal.
Yet does thy agony holds a secret truth
Thy heart of ruth
Preparing through sweet and torturous pain
A greater good.
When man has shorn thy masks of joys and grief
Measureless he grows beyond relief
Then does his will resume the heroic climb
To peaks of glory and joys sublime
To fathomless bliss
His soul dives deep and discovers
Beauty’s sunlit way and Love’s unfading Kiss!
The Mask of God
Pain is a mask
Thou wearest, our bodies to hide
From fierce delight.
Error is a mask
The veil that oft conceals to sight
The purest light.
Terror is a mask
Behind the wicked, ugly and vile
Thy beatific smile.
Sorrow is a mask
Our hearts that long and want and weep
Are but love asleep.
Death is a mask
Eternal life in us has worn
Immortal life, when life of transient things outgrown.
We Are All Nomads
Tribes of the Sun
Wandering upon earth
In a brief sojourn
To build the city of gold
To embody God’s delight
In a body of crimson light.
We are all nomads
Spread upon earth
As various tribes
To immortally build
A deathless frame
With transient mortal things.
We are all nomads
Wearing an earthly dress
Homeless eternal free
Dwelling in a house of flesh
Roaming and rooted in time
Flowering in space as a tree.
We are all nomads
Linked inwardly to all
We meet and part
Or so it seems
To our ignorant heart
We join and separate
Rejoin again
In numberless bodies and birth
Yet remain always secure and safe
In the breast of one eternal One.
She Has Come
In the silence of the night
She has come
The goddess dark and and beautiful
With a terrible cry She has slain the Night
The goddess mighty and wonderful.
In her warrior mood, a sword in hand
She asked us to give all that we could
And a joy intense invaded the heart
To be Her child seemed the only good.
Though fierce She seemed in attire bold
Yet a love intense had moved her heart
To rescue her children from the Asura’s hold
Was Her sovereign will her only task.
She came to free our souls from the night
Covering her glory and splendour of Light.
In the surge of the Ages, in the sweep of Time
What shall survive? What shall survive?
Hearts that loved truly, the love that never dies
The minds grown tranquil, luminous, wide.
Lives that were lived for beauty and truth
And goodness and nobility of the generous and wise
The song of love triumphant over death and night
The aspiration high, the joyous sacrifice.
The prayer that rose in the depths of the soul
To heal this world of sorrow and pain
The hero who walked in the pit unslain
Battling against darkness for Light to survive.
A life that was offered at the altar of God
For His Will to triumph on the paths we tried.
If thou wouldst Lord, yet grant me a wish
Let me then feel Thee in every stab and kiss
In all sounds Thy voice may be heard
In every contact feel the thrill of Thy Bliss.
May Thy Face be seen through every face
Thy Beauty felt in every line and trace
In every gaze Thy single gaze may I meet
Peering through the walls of form and flesh.
May my life be an unbroken wave rising high
In a choral song climbing towards Thy heights
My body a ground for Thy harmonies to play
Joining and tuning my earth to Thy skies.
In Thee, for Thee, by Thee may I live
Held by Thy Love, moved by Thy Will.
When I Depart
As all we must one day
Until our very body is filled
With the breath of God in everyway,
Let not machines be a part
Nor imprison my breath
in iron cages
Just let it be as it must be
An offering at the Feet of God.
When I depart
Let my heart beats be offered to God
Neither man nor the gods
Can claim
What only to Her belongs
We are but sparks of the golden Fire
To earthly fire our body goes
And the breath that never was ours
Spreads into the far wide universe
Filled with Her luminous Force
To life filled worlds it goes
And to Her wide arms returns
With gratitude, joy and love
For being given to serve
And dance to the rhythms of infinity.
When I depart
Let not the gaze of cold material science
Pierce through the pores
But let it be an art
As the gentle fading of a flower at Her Feet
Or the slipping of a cloak
From the soul
Released. The heart absolved
From joy and grief
Contemplating Her golden Feet.
When I depart
Let not a human bond
Distract my heart
Since deep within I love only Her
And to Her belongs my body and soul
And all that I am and ever shall be
To Her belong.
When I depart
Let each each and every part
Each cell and heartbeat and breath
Of Her grow an inseparable part
And when I return
To do Her Work
Let nothing be lost of the past
That yet may serve Her Will
My soul to expand into the infinity of God
My body with increasing soul to fill.
The Eventide
As if vanishing in some deeps
Nay, for the Light can never go nor fade
Only it changes its mood and mode
Night too is light concealed Moving in the world of sleep
Illumining passages through dream
To the Source who dwells in one and all
And watches over our waking and sleep.
It is Light that burns and shines in the sun
It is Light that blazes in the stars and drips from the moon
It is Light that is hid in Nothingness’ womb
It is Light that weaves the atomic dance in the void
It is Light that seeks its home in the plant and the beast
It is Light that becomes the seeking flame
And the answering Truth that brings to life the vast Inane.
It is Light that is the essence of the Self whose core is Love
It is Light that is yonder and close, below and Above
It is Light that builds the forms through sight
It is Light that emerges as peace and delight.
Lo! The eventide falls and calls me home
For I hear Radha’s anklet and Krishna’s flute
The noise has settled and the hush prevails
My heart awaits the rapture of Shyama’s face.
Song to My Beloved
The Divine Mother
Beloved Sweet
How many lives have we wandered
To reach at Thy Feet
And hold them to our heart
Longing to meet
Thou who alone art our substance and soul
Without Thee, life is but a cipher or a blot
A senseless struggle, a meaningless plot
With Thee all becomes purposeful, whole.
Neither heaven I seek nor the riches of the gods
Neither earthly joys nor pleasant colonnades
Can satisfy my longing, but this alone
Bind me forever to Thy Heart O Love
Let all in me belong to Thee
And nothing kept for world or me.
O sweet Beloved come
Come and take me
For Thee I wait.
Completely Yours
For all eternity
Make me completely Thine.
Slowly And Slowly
With each passing day
You come nearer and nearer to me
Let me feel
In the beat of moments
Thy sweet eternity.
Let each breath be
A song of Thy infinity.
To Thee Sole Beloved
Offered my life as flowers
My hopes as incense
And my aspiration as candle
My works as worship
And my voice as prayer.
All my moments as the sacrifice
Love you my sole Beloved.
O friends and foes
Of my mortal days
And earthly sphere
Praise me not
Nor even criticise
When I depart and be gone
To the shades and the Light
Each part to its realm
Where it justly belongs
What use is praise
When naked truth is near
Without the gleaming covers
Men put on their acts
Nor would criticism help
Even if true it may be
For I cannot change anymore
The garbs and the covers
That wrapped my soul
They will be torn
Except what served the cause
The purpose of my birth.
With these transformed
I shall be home
To the realm of the soul
To rest awhile in Her
Only to return
For the purpose of the stars
And walk towards the Sun.
So if you would’st
Neither mourn nor eulogise
But simply send
A thought of love
For me to surprise
In the heavens of wonders
Where we never find
The tender love and care
Whose fragrance sweet
Only our earth does bear.
Light Supreme
Eternal gleam
Enter my heart
Never to part.
Love Supreme
Thou alone art
Yoke me to Thee
In every part.
Om Mother Sri Aurobindo is My Refuge

Thou art the future evolution of the race
Thou art the hope of earth and its faith
Supreme consciousness, Light supreme
Thou art my surrender and refuge.
