Sri Aurobindo wrote this essay dealing with the four aspects of the Mother and related topics in the autumn of 1927 with the idea of publishing it in the booklet that eventually became The Mother. The essay was published as the sixth chapter of The Mother in 1928.

Man is a link between the Inconscient and the Superconscious, between the darkness below and the Light Above. This is his conflict in which he is caught at the moment. In the Integral Yoga, we turn to the Divine Mother who is One and yet Infinite and hence can be approached by each individual in his or her unique way. The lack of a rigid structure allows for individual variations in our approach to the One Infinite Reality.
